Into the Current: Burma's Political Prisoners directed by Jeanne Hallacy, is a moving film that sheds light on Burma's unsung heroes - its political prisoners - and the price they've paid for speaking truth to power under a military regime. The film is a co-production with the Democratic Voice of Burma and features Bo Kyi's work to free all political prisoners in Burma while striving to deepen the understanding of their role as political leaders.

After the film, Bo Kyi will address the essential role political prisoners have to play in Burma's burgeoning democracy movement and in national unity, as well as the sincerity of the recent rapid-fire changes that have taken place in Burma, including a substantial release of high-profile political prisoners on January 13, 2012. He will elaborate on what is needed to solidify these changes and genuinely move Burma towards a sustainable democracy.

More information

Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years. Designated the "World's Greatest Naval Ship" due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technology for more than 50 years.

Currently the bow of the USS IOWA is the only area available for visiting onboard the ship. It is the intent of PBC to open additional areas prior to the departure of IOWA to Los Angeles. During your visit there are additional exhibits to visit including vehicles from the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation, a Harpoon missile, 16" shells and numerous other exhibits from regional museums.

Please be aware of the following requirements when visiting the USS IOWA while in Richmond:

The USS Iowa is currently unable to accommodate visitors on board that are unable to walk unassisted. However, there are plenty of shore side exhibits that can be viewed.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Adults need to be aware of steep brow, brow step at top, steel protrusions and deck unevenness and take the proper steps to keep children aware at all times.

Children 10 and under must be accompanied by one adult per child on the ship tour.

Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times on board the USS Iowa. No heels or open toed shoes permitted.

Appropriate clothing is required. No shirts, no shoes, no boarding.

LOOKING AHEAD

Get Silly at Richmond's 6th Annual Silly Parade
Begins at 23rd Street and Macdonald Avenue
April 14th
11:30 am - 11:39 am

Come join the all-singing, all-dancing, no-trans fat, "6th Annual Richmond Silly Parade"!

March with us, or crowd the sidewalk and overwhelm us with cheering.

Building on the success of the city's Cinco de Mayo, Juneteenth, and Home Front festival, the Richmond Silly Parade was originally conceived as a parody of marching parades. But its real purpose was to build community by using humor as rebar.   The parade has become just that; a celebration of people's energy, imagination, pride, and initiative featuring musical groups, sports teams, civic organizations along with a generous helping of old-fashioned fun.

Previous marches, led by La Raza Unida Car Club, have included the Senior Citizen Dry-Water Swim Team, Rosie the Riveter Park Rangers, the Boy Scouts, art bikes, pets in costume, pet owners in costume, giant puppets, The Iron Triangle Philharmonic, soccer teams, The Marching Moustaches, saxophone players, the Chu-chu Train, and Mother Earth herself.

This year, in the "6th Annual", we hope to add a gospel choir, a Toddler Contingent (1-5 years), kids wearing their Halloween costumes (6-12 years), stilt walkers, floats, high school marching bands, a Dog Lovers Brigade, street ballet, the Wind Chime Orchestra, and YOU getting in touch with your Inner Silly.

For questions, free parade ideas, and to sign up, ring The Silly Parade Committee at (510) 235-5519, or email richmondsillyparade@gmail.com. Be there or be oblong.

Richmond is Prime Bird-watching Territory

From the Contra Costa Times:

Who? Who? Last Sunday, the Eye made a modest contribution to science -- with its ear.

Shortly before dusk, The Eye ran into Nel Benningshof and Nick Despota, of Richmond, in Wildcat Canyon Regional Park as the two veteran birders demonstrated their tripod-mounted field scope to a group of teenage passers-by.

The youths zoomed in on a pine cone, when Despota announced, "I see two American robins" and swiveled the scope around.

The couple were taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, when birders across North America tally each species they identify in a four-day period.

Richmond is prime bird-watching territory, situated on the Pacific Flyway and near the mouth of the Sacramento River, Benningshof explained. As of about 6 p.m. last Sunday, Richmond was in third place among 620 California localities, with 99 bird species reported by around a dozen contributors. Later in the week, Richmond was running fourth, but the species count had climbed to 130.

As The Eye left, Despota instructed it to listen for the Great Horned Owl, demonstrating its characteristic "Hoo-HOO" call. The couple had seen one swooping overhead two years ago, but no one in Richmond had logged any yet during this year's Bird Count. Less than 10 minutes later, on a narrow trail near Wildcat Creek, the Eye heard "Hoo-HOO, HOO, HOO." Three more times the call came, in the same rhythmic pattern.

Reached by phone later that evening, Despota said The Eye's observation, even without a visual sighting, was valid, because the Great Horned Owl's call is unmistakable. He and Benningshof had heard it, too, he said, but too faintly to tally it with confidence until the Eye confirmed it.

For more information on the Great Backyard Bird Count, go to www.birdsource.org/gbbc/

Observations made during the Feb. 17-20 period will be accepted until March 5.
