Born in Germany, York was raised on a rich diet of American and British music, including Peter Gabriel, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Debussy and Pat Metheny. York trained first in classical guitar, then piano, percussion, bass and trumpet. His decision to spend his life as a professional musician was nearly derailed by his disconsolate parents, until his uncle, who had played piano while a prisoner of war, intervened and convinced York's parents to let him follow hear heart.
He has been traveling this country non-stop, as a true musical vagabond for over the past 6 years, and all that he's seen, heard and experienced in his adopted country pours out from him in his vibrant live performances. In his own words, "Composing is not only a matter of music, it means basically inventing your life in a new way, every day." York's joy is infectious, and experiencing him play is a truly wonderful, upbeat way to start this New Year.
Opening the show is Aireene Espiritu. Philippine born, Bay area tenor ukulele player and singer/songwriter, Espiritu moved to the US at 10. She grew up in that 3rd culture of the old country, the new and the mix of both. Her rich emotional vocals sing stories of human beings being human, the ghosts and the living and the identities of culture within cultures.
