Award-winning songwriters Claudia Russell and Katie Dahl to perform!  And worthy of a special date, this is a special concert. Russell is one of the Bay Area's finest not-so-under-the-radar vocal talents - her second CD, "Ready To Receive" earned her Best Musician honors in the East Bay Express 2006 Readers' Poll.

A third-generation singer, Russell demonstrates a remarkable way with a song- whether it's one of her own wistful song-stories or a vintage western swing rave. With two decades as a professional musician under her belt, Russell fuses a remarkable set of musical references from Smoky Robinson to the Smokey Mountains into a sonic landscape that's all her own. And she keeps it real, with kitchen table easiness, telling shaggy dog stories and poking fun in-between songs with her husband/mandolinist Bruce Kaplan.

It was Russell's inspiration to invite Minnesota native Katie Dahl to share the show. Dahl sings with a pure voice that is purely Midwestern, with cherry orchards, broad wide skies, vintage movie stars and county line roads populating her songs. Her classic folk style gives a nod to greats like Pete Seeger and Dar Williams.

The Point Richmond series is presented by Folk Unlimited, Point Richmond music and the FMC. The Church itself is intimate and an acoustic marvel. The 100-year-old church is an octagonal wooden prism that appears to be built by nautical carpenters. It's like listening to music inside a guitar.

Series artistic director Bruce Kaplan explains, "Our program is completely non-religious and people of all faiths or no faith are welcome. It's a friendly no-pressure environment, and even if it's been a few decades since you have set foot in a church no one is going to bite you. But they might offer you a cookie or cup of coffee. It's all about the music here!"

Our season comes to a rousing finish as East meets West in The Hot Mikado. In the mythical village of Titi-Pu, where flirting is illegal, a young man on the run from his over-eager fiancée is searching for the woman who stole his heart. Unfortunately, she has already been promised to her much older guardian. A series of seemingly fool-proof plans are hatched, only to be foiled by the merciless Mikado. A snappy, 1940s-style adaptation of a Gilbert and Sullivan classic!

Road Not Taken

A dear friend of ours, Betty Reid-Soskin, is celebrating her 90th Birthday in style and proceeds from the party will benefit NIAD.

If you don't know Betty, she is an absolute treasure to our local community and the Bay Area at large. Her daughter Dorian Reid attends NIAD and she works as a community outreach assistant at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historic Park in Richmond.

Her birthday party is called the Road Not Taken. The event will celebrate her illustrious life and Betty will perform s series of songs that she hasn't crooned in public in nearly forty years! Betty turned down an entertainment career when she was a young mother, hence the title of the event.

If you would like to learn more about Betty you can read her blog!

We hope you can join us!
