Jess   Kolman, artist and her whimsical Heyfaces

The Heyfaces have been in business for less than a year, the characters have been a part of Jess's life for over 30 years. Since launching the Heyfaces Company last fall, Jess has focused on polishing her designs and creating professional-quality product. She began drawing them simply as doodles when she was a little girl, and now creates more elaborate versions on handmade greeting cards for family and friends.

Because the Heyfaces grew out of a doodle, Jess doesn't cite any specific inspiration or intention in creating them, but in hindsight, she believes they can been viewed symbolically.

Currently, Heyfaces can be purchased at the Pinole farmers' market, Point Richmond Farmer's Market, Point Richmond Music Concerts, Art in the Park produced by Arts of Point Richmond and various other local events.  Online shopping will be available soon at www.heyface.com. Jess is a member of the Pinole Artisans and the Arts of Point Richmond.

It all began with a woman and a suitcase. The Richmond Art Center began with founder Hazel Salmi's determination to meet the needs of people to "...exercise their innate abilities for creative expression" by carrying her art supplies around Richmond in a suitcase. 75 years later, we celebrate and showcase the work of the Richmond Art Center's core faculty: professional artists who fill our studios with inspiration and continue the legacy of offering accessible and engaging art education for all ages.

Last Week to see "Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit

NIAD Art Center

551 23rd Street

Art Show: June 20th - August 19th

Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Bay Area Artists Host Free Region-wide Community Art Event

The San Francisco Bay Area will be buzzing with creativity on September 2, 2011 during the first official Take 5: Art Break Day. Hosted by Art is Moving, this free public event encourages attendees to "Take an Art Break" and provides supplies and a space to create art.

The event will occur simultaneously in five different Bay Area cities - San Francisco, San Rafael, Richmond, Berkeley, and Oakland - and will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Canopied booths and tables will be set up in the downtown area of each city and will provide free access to art supplies, including paint brushes, paper, pencils, paints, and crayons. Everyone is welcome to have a seat and make art for free.

Take 5: Art Break Day aims to encourage people to take a momentary break to create free art.  According to Lisa Rasmussen, co-founder of Art is Moving, "creating art together in a public space encourages dialog between strangers and allows everyone the opportunity to discover the power of art. Rarely in our busy lives do we make room for it."

No prior art-making experience is necessary to attend the event. "Anyone can make art.  One of the reasons we're hosting this event is to help those who have never had the chance to try making art realize that they can," says Lauren Odell Usher, another Art is Moving co-founder.
