"UNCERTAIN GLORY"
During World War II, Jean Picard (Errol Flynn) is a convicted killer being led to the guillotine; he escapes during an air raid. He is captured by French Sűreté Inspector Marcel Bonet (Paul Lukas). They learn that a bridge has been blown up by three saboteurs, and that the Germans have taken 100 hostages who will be killed unless the saboteurs are apprehended by the Vichy police. To buy time in order to escape again, Picard persuades Bonet to let him pose as one of the saboteurs to save the hostages. In the course of enacting a story that will convince the Vichy that Picard is one of the escaped saboteurs, he and Bonet encounter the real saboteur, captured by the Vichy, and aid him in escaping.
Picard falls in love with Marianne (Jean Sullivan), a local girl, and with freedom just ahead for both of them, struggles with his conscience over the fate of the hostages, her trust in him, and his own perception of himself.

Friends & Family Bar-B-Q
| Richmond's Miller/Knox Park (Seagull Picnic Site)
Saturday, August 13th 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
Homeless members of Saffron Strand, Inc., the Richmond-based non-profit are organizing the Bar-B-Q. This picnic fare gets great taste and flair through the art of Chef Christopher Bowman, a Saffron Strand member and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College in Las Vegas. Other homeless Richmond residents at work on the Bar-B-Q include Tiffany Scott, Event Coordinator and winner of the Saffron Strand 2011 Homeless Citizen Achievement Award, and Roosevelt Lee who is studying to qualify as a food service professional. Richmond-based musician, DJ, and Saffron Strand member Eli Brown is providing entertainment for the event. Although they are homeless, the Saffron Strand members at work on this event and other projects are building their vocational skills and work-related social skills, supported by an intentional community of their peers and volunteers who work with the homeless. A number take inspiration from the small business cooperative model described by Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and other civic leaders. Organizing the Bar-B-Q helps develop their technical skills, on-the-job experience, and entrepreneurial and social enterprise potential. Proceeds from the Friends & Family Bar-B-Q support Saffron Strand programming, including food handling classes and other job training to benefit Richmond and other Contra Costa communities. Donations are $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per child (10 and under). See the attached flyer and how to register for the Friends & Family Bar-B-Q. To register online, see "Upcoming Events" at saffronstrand.org |

"Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit
| |
NIAD Art Center
551 23rd Street
Art Show: June 20th - August 19th
Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Bay Area Artists Host Free Region-wide Community Art Event
|
The San Francisco Bay Area will be buzzing with creativity on September 2, 2011 during the first official Take 5: Art Break Day. Hosted by Art is Moving, this free public event encourages attendees to "Take an Art Break" and provides supplies and a space to create art.
The event will occur simultaneously in five different Bay Area cities - San Francisco, San Rafael, Richmond, Berkeley, and Oakland - and will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Canopied booths and tables will be set up in the downtown area of each city and will provide free access to art supplies, including paint brushes, paper, pencils, paints, and crayons. Everyone is welcome to have a seat and make art for free.
Take 5: Art Break Day aims to encourage people to take a momentary break to create free art. According to Lisa Rasmussen, co-founder of Art is Moving, "creating art together in a public space encourages dialog between strangers and allows everyone the opportunity to discover the power of art. Rarely in our busy lives do we make room for it."
No prior art-making experience is necessary to attend the event. "Anyone can make art. One of the reasons we're hosting this event is to help those who have never had the chance to try making art realize that they can," says Lauren Odell Usher, another Art is Moving co-founder.
