Visiting Landfill Loop of the Bay Trail
| |
Friends of the Bay Trail in Richmond,
KQED's new video on the Bay Trail has generated lots of interest in visiting the Landfill Loop located where Wildcat and San Pablo Creeks enter San Pablo Bay. TRAC suggests holding off on that for several weeks because the San Pablo Creek NE side of the loop trail is closed temporarily during reconstruction and regrading of the former landfill's entry to be followed by paving of the entry and Bay Trail staging area.
However, referring to the Wildcat Marsh & Landfill Loop Trail Guide , 3.7 miles of trail is open and accessible from the southern trailhead. You may walk or bike along Wildcat Marsh for 1.3 miles and then take a 2.2-mile loop involving the upper trail and the Bay Trail along the shoreline of San Pablo Bay before heading back to this trailhead for a worthy hike of 4.8 miles in total. The upper trail is not recommended for bicycles.

Vintage Views of Old Point Richmond Town- Linda Lee Calvan Drake
| |
Point Richmond Art Collective at deWitt Gallery and Framing
121 Park Place
Saturday, July 23rd
4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Artist Statement from Linda: "I illustrate colorful whimsical interpretations of Victorian residences on the hills of Point Richmond, treasured beaches, boats, secret places and vintage buildings. I call this series of images Vintage Views of Old Point Richmond Town. As a Point Richmond native, I have always appreciated the ability of Point Richmond to be an oasis in our reality. Each Victorian home brings interest to the present with surprising tales from the past. I have collected many of the vintage tales from family and friends in Point Richmond. Illustrating, painting and writing allow me to share this knowledge with some artistic license.
The Point was a very cool place to live in as a child. I have memories of paddling my surfboard out to the end of the Keller's and Long Wharf piers. I still find joy in the relentless sound of fog horns, watching the tug boats, children playing on the beaches and the occasional resident kayaking along the shoreline. While I have witnessed the slow growth of commercialism and the ever growing population on the vacant hills of my youth, I will always enjoy the whimsical characteristics of Old Point Richmond Town."

San Francisco Mime Troupe - 2012 The Musical
|
Nicholl Park Macdonald Avenue & 33rd Street Saturday, July 23rd 2:00pm FREE More information about the San Francisco Mime Troupe here. A small political theater company, Theater BAM!, finds itself at a crossroads: should they keep telling the stories they feel can change the world (and starve while telling them), or feed at the corporate trough, sell out, and be the mouthpiece for The Man. Tough decision. But before having to make it, they are offered an artistic commission that may save the company; all they have to do is create a new play, "2012 - The Musical!" But is it political? Will it keep with the company's original mission? What's the true purpose of this frivolous production, and who's really bankrolling the thing?

"Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit
| |
NIAD Art Center
551 23rd Street
Art Show: June 20th - August 19th
Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Bay Area Artists Host Free Region-wide Community Art Event
|
The San Francisco Bay Area will be buzzing with creativity on September 2, 2011 during the first official Take 5: Art Break Day. Hosted by Art is Moving, this free public event encourages attendees to "Take an Art Break" and provides supplies and a space to create art.
The event will occur simultaneously in five different Bay Area cities - San Francisco, San Rafael, Richmond, Berkeley, and Oakland - and will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Canopied booths and tables will be set up in the downtown area of each city and will provide free access to art supplies, including paint brushes, paper, pencils, paints, and crayons. Everyone is welcome to have a seat and make art for free.
Take 5: Art Break Day aims to encourage people to take a momentary break to create free art. According to Lisa Rasmussen, co-founder of Art is Moving, "creating art together in a public space encourages dialog between strangers and allows everyone the opportunity to discover the power of art. Rarely in our busy lives do we make room for it."
No prior art-making experience is necessary to attend the event. "Anyone can make art. One of the reasons we're hosting this event is to help those who have never had the chance to try making art realize that they can," says Lauren Odell Usher, another Art is Moving co-founder.

West County Reads Seeks Storage Space for "Take One, Leave One" Library Bookshelves Initiative!
| |
About two months ago we made a call for book donations. You answered that call -- and then some! Due to the tremendous generosity of the community and donors, we now have a great supply of new and gently-used children's books that will help ensure the "Take One, Leave One" Bookshelves located throughout the City are always fully stocked. We are thrilled! THANK YOU!
In a new twist, we now find ourselves short on storage and must vacate our current space at the Richmond College Prep pre-school--as the school is presently moving into a wonderful new space at the historic Maritime Center building adjacent to the school property.
Can you help us? We are urgently seeking a free or low-cost storage space/room suitable for book storage. The books are boxed in standard cardboard cartons. A location in Richmond would be ideal, but all locations gratefully considered.
Contact Mrs. Monteiro to discuss any ideas you may have: 510-292-1930.
Sincerely,
Tana Monteiro (RCPS), Kevin Hufferd (West County Reads), "Take One, Leave One" Library Committee, and the NURVE Education Action Team
