The Great Dictator is a comedy film by Charlie Chaplin released in October 1940. Like most Chaplin films, he wrote, produced, and directed, in addition to starring as the lead. Having been the only Hollywood film maker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, this was Chaplin's first true talking picture as well as his most commercially successful film.[1] More importantly, it was the first major feature film of its period to bitterly satirize Nazism and Adolf Hitler.
At the time of its first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany. Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Hitler, fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis, the latter of whom he excoriates in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts".
Note access to the ship requires walking up a steep ramp and the ability to climb stairs.

"Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit
| |
NIAD Art Center
551 23rd Street
Art Show: June 20th - August 19th
Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Bay Area Artists Host Free Region-wide Community Art Event
|
The San Francisco Bay Area will be buzzing with creativity on September 2, 2011 during the first official Take 5: Art Break Day. Hosted by Art is Moving, this free public event encourages attendees to "Take an Art Break" and provides supplies and a space to create art.
The event will occur simultaneously in five different Bay Area cities - San Francisco, San Rafael, Richmond, Berkeley, and Oakland - and will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Canopied booths and tables will be set up in the downtown area of each city and will provide free access to art supplies, including paint brushes, paper, pencils, paints, and crayons. Everyone is welcome to have a seat and make art for free.
Take 5: Art Break Day aims to encourage people to take a momentary break to create free art. According to Lisa Rasmussen, co-founder of Art is Moving, "creating art together in a public space encourages dialog between strangers and allows everyone the opportunity to discover the power of art. Rarely in our busy lives do we make room for it."
No prior art-making experience is necessary to attend the event. "Anyone can make art. One of the reasons we're hosting this event is to help those who have never had the chance to try making art realize that they can," says Lauren Odell Usher, another Art is Moving co-founder.

West County Reads Seeks Storage Space for "Take One, Leave One" Library Bookshelves Initiative!
| |
About two months ago we made a call for book donations. You answered that call -- and then some! Due to the tremendous generosity of the community and donors, we now have a great supply of new and gently-used children's books that will help ensure the "Take One, Leave One" Bookshelves located throughout the City are always fully stocked. We are thrilled! THANK YOU!
In a new twist, we now find ourselves short on storage and must vacate our current space at the Richmond College Prep pre-school--as the school is presently moving into a wonderful new space at the historic Maritime Center building adjacent to the school property.
Can you help us? We are urgently seeking a free or low-cost storage space/room suitable for book storage. The books are boxed in standard cardboard cartons. A location in Richmond would be ideal, but all locations gratefully considered.
Contact Mrs. Monteiro to discuss any ideas you may have: 510-292-1930.
Sincerely,
Tana Monteiro (RCPS), Kevin Hufferd (West County Reads), "Take One, Leave One" Library Committee, and the NURVE Education Action Team
