Unveiling of Gompers Mural

8th St. and Richmond Greenway (between Ohio and Chanslor)
Thursday, June 30th
2:00 pm
At 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 30, Mayor McLaughlin will join student artists to cut the ribbon on the newly completed mural covering the side of a large building at 8th Street and the Richmond Greenway, adjacent to the Gompers Garden, where students have planted fruit and vegetables. In April, the Richmond City Council gave the OK for Gompers students to re-paint their mural after the first one they did at that location last October was painted over due to Code Enforcement's interpretation that it was "unauthorized graffiti", even though the owner of the building had given them permission to put their artwork on his wall. Over the next several months, the students and some adult allies, including Gompers teacher Gretchen Borg, persisted in trying to find a way to assert their right to free artistic expression, and their efforts paid off.
One of the student artists, David Cazares, noted, "It was a blessing to be a part of a mural in my hometown, to create art on this old boring wall. This isn't graffiti, this is a talent that God has given me! I am hoping the City can give us more walls in Richmond."
Another student artist, Jose Lopez chimed in, "...My friends and I share the same joy for Art and we wanted to make our town a place we could be proud of. The whole process of getting together with other artists and friends, being able to paint what we wanted without fear of harassment for our creativity and to be able to show our families our talent was awesome. I am so stoked that we were given this opportunity to beautify our neighborhood by sending positive images to tell the people that we can have color where we live not just thrive in a dark place with no artistic influence."
Gompers High School principal, Latoya Williams, is very pleased with the outcome, and stated, "Working with Gretchen and our muralist (current and former) during the 2010 - 2011 school year has opened my eyes to a world of many possibilities. I am a passionate supporter of students' voices, community voices, and voices of a people. The code enforcements act has created a movement for Artists in Richmond. ... I thank Mayor McLaughlin and the greater community for their willingness to understand a new language and immerse themselves in the experience."

"Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit
| |
NIAD Art Center
551 23rd Street
Art Show: June 20th - August 19th
Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Inspiration - Richmond Art Center Faculty Show
It all began with a woman and a suitcase. The Richmond Art Center began with founder Hazel Salmi's determination to meet the needs of people to "...exercise their innate abilities for creative expression" by carrying her art supplies around Richmond in a suitcase. 75 years later, we celebrate and showcase the work of the Richmond Art Center's core faculty: professional artists who fill our studios with inspiration and continue the legacy of offering accessible and engaging art education for all ages.
