2011 Artist Series Featuring Silvia Y. Ledezma

Arts of Point Richmond

Point Richmond Community Center

139 Washington Avenue

Tuesday, June 21st

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Silvia Y. Ledezma, a San Francisco artist, now living in Point Richmond, is a photographer, printmaker and creates jewelry using beads and semi-precious stones.

Silvia's extensive travel through Mexico in the early 70's prompted her "Surrealist Experience with Photography". She was discovered by Mexican Master Photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo after being selected to exhibit at Mexico City's foremost Auditorio Nacional (National Auditorium).

A decade later, Silvia returned to San Francisco California, became a mother and received a State Grant to attend College of Arts and Crafts. Armed with a B. A. Interdisciplinary Arts and M. A. Visual Studies from U.C. Berkeley she had a career in teaching. The Carpenter's Union gave her an opportunity to be training as a Journeyman Carpenter and Scaffold Builder. Silvia's drive to educate encouraged her to become a Tradeswoman Carpenter and Delegate. Silvia currently is expressing her art in digital photography, designing T- Shirts graphics and making jewelry.

''...by using Folk Art and found objects to create a Surreal Tableaux, I try to convey the identity (and directly experience) between the living and the dead. These images are based on childhood memories woven into my Mexican Heritage.''   Silvia Y. Ledezma

"Chase The Tear" Art Exhibit Opens

NIAD Art Center

551 23rd Street

Art Show: June 20th - August 19th
Reception: Saturday, June 25th, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

ORGANIZED BY TIMOTHY BUCKWALTER,

THE THIRD IN A THREE-PART SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS, OFFERING A BROADER VIEW OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Shattering the conventions that have until now segregated artists with disabilities from their mainstream contemporaries, Chase The Tear blends more than 40 works culled from artists and galleries across the country with those from NIAD Art Center's studio program.

Chase The Tear is the final installment in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Composed of paintings, sculptures and works on paper, Chase The Tear is a reflection on Beth Gibbons' alluring croon and fractured lyrical impressionism heard in Portishead's song of the same name. The exhibition features work from Val Britton, Cederick Brooks, Jeremy Burleson, Kristi Dean, Luis Estrada, Sam Gant, Brent Hallard, James Ham, Heather Hamann, Willie Harris, Shana Harper, Scott Hewicker, Chris Johanson, Jeffrey Cortland Jones, Michael Macfeat, Ann Meade, Philip King, Rosita Pardo, Tony Pedemonte, Dean Smith, Rochelle Peterson, Wendell Singleton, Lisa Solomon, Micke Tong, Rebecca Whipple and Douglas Witmer.

Mark LeMaire and Twilight in concert

First United Methodist Church

201 Martina Street (corner W Richmond Avenue)

Sunday, June 26th

5:00 pm

$10 per person

Returning to perform after their August 2010 concert at 1st United Methodist Church, the music of New Acoustic performer Mark Lemaire is both ethereal and deeply grounded, the guitar playing virtuosic and not quite like anything you've heard before. Berkeley songwriter Carol Denney says that "To call him a remarkable player would be a considerable understatement - just about nobody I know is doing what Mark can do on the guitar." He's shared the stage with Tracy Chapman, Maria Muldaur, The Dixie Dregs, and bass virtuoso Michael Manring. Recording studio experiences include work with producer Jimmy Miller (Rolling Stones, Blind Faith, Traffic), and Johnny Thunders (New York Dolls).I have heard many wonderful CDs over the years, but a few of them just have that magical something. It is hard to explain. "Rubato" is one of those few. It is more like a companion than a recording," Steve Meckfessel, songwriter & recent performer at Point Richmond Acoustic Series at 1st UMC.

As a composer and performer, Matt created a distinctive style using an extraordinary breath driven synthesizer as his primary melodic expression. He and his band, The Venusians, made unique contributions to the budding genres of World Music and Electronica. Using traditional instrumentation with newer innovations, they were also the first to introduce this style to the world of Special and Gala Events, where they maintain a strong presence to this day.

As a soloist Matt plays a newer innovation known as the Hang. It has become his greatest gift and mission to share the beauty of this heart-opening instrument in many capacities.

"Queen of The Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?" is an in-depth investigation to discover the causes and solutions behind Colony Collapse Disorder; a phenomenon where honeybees vanish from their hives, never to return. Queen of The Sun follows the voices and visions of beekeepers, philosophers, and scientists from around the world, all struggling for the survival of the bees. While other bee films focus exclusively on commercial beekeepers, Queen of The Sun emphasizes the biodynamic and organic communities who have differing opinions from many of the outspoken migratory commercial beekeepers and are often overlooked by the media despite their deep and profound insights into the long-term issues that have brought about the recent collapse.

Queen of The Sun reveals bees as a barometer of the health of the world. Bees fly millions of miles to keep the earth in bloom and have provided humans with honey, wax and pollination for our food for over 10,000 years. Through animation and illuminated imagery, Queen of The Sun uncovers how bees were highly revered by the Egyptians, Mayans and Greeks, but the bond between humans and bees, once a sacred partnership is now a complicated, profit-driven, industrial enterprise.

Living Courageously:

Choosing Nonviolence in the Face of Fear with Miki Kashtan, Ph.D.

We all know stories about people who maintain their integrity, be it a commitment to nonviolence or an unpopular position, despite the potential of significant cost to themselves. Gandhi's life and writings, for example, continually point out the vital role of learning to act despite fear in order to embody the spirit of nonviolence. Each one of us has myriad opportunities on a daily basis to overcome fear and live in deeper integrity with our values.

This day-long workshop is designed as a hands-on exploration to support participants in understanding the dynamics of fear and polarization, and to provide tools for responding to challenging situations. Our goal is to equip participants with core principles of Nonviolent Communication they can use to depolarize issues and to make difficult choices. One key principle we focus on is learning to identify, moment by moment, what's most important in a given situation, to be able to choose with integrity and clarity how to show up in a way that provides connection, understanding, and peace to all involved.

Being a Good Neighbor...

On May 26th, at Chevron's annual shareholders meeting, a video was shown that featured Chevron's community engagement activities in Richmond. The video underscores Chevron's role as a community member and highlights some of the great programs we are privileged to participate in. Being a good neighbor is a job we have always taken seriously, from our commitment to safe operations to providing support for community programs and schools. We especially want to thank Sal Vaca, Director of Employment and Training for Richmond; Helen Nichols, GRIP board member; Joan Davis, President of the Richmond Community Foundation; Dr. Bruce Harter, Superintendent of West Contra Costa Unified School District; and Nathan Trivers, owner of the Up and Under pub for their participation in the video and for their fellowship.
