Hot off the trail of a UK tour, Folk/Americana duo Misner & Smith will perform their award-winning music at Point Richmond Acoustic Concert Series Friday night.  The pair has gained acclaim up and down the west coast and overseas for its top-notch songwriting, musicianship and extraordinary vocal harmonies. They have recently released a third album, Live at the Freight & Salvage, and have been on tour much of the last year to promote it.

The duo's musical collaboration began in 2004 after working together as actors on their first production of the musical Woody Guthrie's American Song, where they immediately recognized a mutual love of Americana music, particularly focused on vocal harmonies. They have performed at the San Francisco and El Cerrito Folk Festivals, and headlined at Berkeley's famed acoustic venue, the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse.

Special guest Jill Freeman has been a professional songwriter for more than 20 years. Her song "Kisses Good" "was featured in "Mister Wrong," starring Ellen Degeneres. Jill's songs and singing voice have also been heard on television on such shows as Roswell, the Young and the Restless, Providence, Melrose Place, Chelsea Lately, Better Off Ted among others. She enjoyed collaborating with blues guitar legend Robben Ford, for his release, "Keep on Running." Jill continues to write and perform with her husband, songwriter/producer Joel Wachbrit. The duo mix folk, blues, pop and jazz for a hard-to-categorize sound that is captivating and original.

The Ed. Fund's 23rd Annual Excellence in Education Banquet: Let the Music Play will spotlight the increasing need for private support for music programs in West Contra Costa public schools and honor the achievement of our teachers and student scholars.  As we recognize the great work being done in our schools we look to you, as a member of our community, for support of this inspiring event.

This movie, produced by Brian Hofstetter for Nomadics with original soundtrack by Michael Gill, has not been presented publicly for over twenty years and is truly a special experience. This private event is the kick-off of a charitable release of the film to raise funds for repairs and general improvement of life at the monastery. Please join us for this special evening benefit.

Kyimolung is the sacred and secret Buddhist pilgrimage circuit in the mountains around Tsum Valley in a 30 km radius of the Nepal-China border. It is bounded by Lajyang Bhanjyang in the west, Thapla in the east, and goes through places such as Chhekam, Philim, Sirdibas, Dyang, Bihi, Namrung, Prok, Lho, Samagaon and Samdo in Nepal, and Rui Gaon, Ning, Sala Himal and Nyang in Tibet.

Kyimolung takes its name from Kyimo, meaning "happiness" and Lung, meaning "stream". That is why the area is called Kyimolung, or the "stream of happiness." Kyimolung is the most sacred and secret pilgrimage in Buddhist Lamaism.

Life of the World to Come: Darkness Falls Upon Us

NIAD

551 23rd Street

Through June 3rd

Darkness Falls Upon Us is the second in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

Grand Opening of the Landfill loop Bay Trail

Friends of the Bay Trail in Richmond,

More than 100 celebrants participated in Republic Services grand opening festivities for the Landfill Loop of the San Francisco Bay Trail.  About half arrived by bicycle from points as distant as Vallejo and Oakland, including a group of 20 to 25 who met at the Plunge to ride the Bay Trail to the Landfill Loop.  Click Here to see a slide show of the scenic event illustrating that even tiny tots joined adults to walk and bicycle the loop trail.

Republic Services organized and generously hosted the event by providing early morning refreshments to start the day followed by a delicious lunch for returning happy walkers and bicyclists.  Moreover, everyone left the event with commemorative T-shirts and "green" useful souvenirs such as reusable water bottles and shopping bags.  Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia gave kudos to Republic Services for building and operating a trail system opening up public access to the shoreline of San Pablo Bay and the rich tidal wetands at the mouths of San Pablo Creek and Wildcat Creek.  In addition to the 2.8-mile Bay Trail loop, Republic has provided a one mile scenic trail on the upper slopes of the former landfill plus a 0.2 spur trail along Wildcat Creek's tidal wetlands.

Click Here to view the elegant new Wildcat Marsh & Landfill Loop Trail Guide.  Referring to the guide, it will not be possible to use the section of trail on the eastern side of the landfill along San Pablo Creek for the next two months or so due to construction work in capping that side of the closed landfill combined with paving and other improvements in that area.  However, 3.7 miles of trail will remain open and accessible from the southern trailhead from the staging area at the end of Parr Blvd.  This route follows Wildcat Marsh for 1.3 miles where you may hike a 2.2-mile loop involving the upper trail and the Bay Trail along the shoreline of San Pablo Bay before heading back to the trailhead for a worthy hike of 4.8 miles in total.  The upper trail is not recommended for bicycles.  TRAC will inform you when construction work has been completed and full Landfill Loop can be traversed once again.
