He is featured on 14 Acoustic Disc CDs and counting, with the DGQ, Jerry Garcia, Enrique Coria, and as the leader of his own jazz trio on the CD, Flute Jazz. Smith's work-whether figurative or abstract-captures the dynamic influence of music. Virginia Jourdan's paintings offer viewers a glimpse into the parenthood through the depiction of intimate, quite moments between mother and child.
About Art in Windows:
Richmond Main Street Initiative continues to transform downtown Richmond by presenting art that embodies the rich diversity of our community. Art in Windows is a collaborative project with the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission that brings together artists, curators, scholars, business owners, merchants, residents, and organizations from the local community in the exhibition of temporary public artworks. Through this ongoing project, we seek to transform vacant storefronts into living, breathing art spaces that celebrate the rich legacy and history of downtown Richmond, and to explore the relationship between art and community development.

6th Annual Cinco de Mayo Peace and Unity Parade
| |
24th Street and Barrett Avenue in Richmond,
Saturday, April 30th
10:00 am-1:00pm
The popular family oriented, multi-cultural event of the year will start at 24th Street and Barrett Avenue in Richmond, and continue up 23rd Street, to reach its destination at San Pablo Civic Center.
The participants and spectators from all the over the Bay Area will proudly represent their Mexican heritage along with other cultures and heritages. The Parade will include five floats with live traditional Mariachi and Banda music, as well as the blasting sounds from DJ Sonido Eclipse. The parade grows every year, and is expected to have over 1000 participants this year, including many Aztec dancers, children from local schools, soccer teams, civic groups, youth groups, Elected Officials, and of course, classic cars. The end of the Parade will feature the popular Dancing Horses, dancing to Banda music.
The Grand Marshall this year will be Martha Anguiano, a young mother, who along with a group of soccer coaches in 2005 started the idea of the Cinco de Mayo Parade, with the theme "Peace and Unity, Paz y Unidad" after the Cities of Richmond and San Pablo had experienced street violence while celebrating Cinco de Mayo for a number of years. As a result of her leadership, ideas and support from the Latino community, the violence stopped and the celebrations have been taking place, since that time.

Life of the World to Come: Darkness Falls Upon Us
|
NIAD
551 23rd Street
Through June 3rd
Darkness Falls Upon Us is the second in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.
