Life of the World to Come: Darkness Falls Upon Us
|
NIAD
551 23rd Street
Through June 3rd
Darkness Falls Upon Us is the second in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

The Richmond Art Center 2540 Macdonald Avenue Saturday, April 23rd 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm FREE Exhibit open through June 10th
The Richmond Art Center is celebrating 75 years as a dynamic and evolving arts organization. We are proud to mark this historical occasion with Beyond Tradition: Art Legacies at the Richmond Art Center. Founded in 1936, one year after San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Richmond Art Center has long established itself as a premier education and exhibition venue. The history of the art center has consistently exemplified the diversity and strength of Bay Area artists. The art center quickly became known and respected as a place to boldly present the latest developments in contemporary art. The early years of the center experienced an exceptional number of solo, group, conceptual and juried exhibitions, which included many artists who have gone on to great renown. This exhibit features work by more than 30 artists who either exhibited, worked, or taught at the center from the 1940s to the 1980s. |

Chevron Richmond Refinery Named Recycled Water Customer of the Year
| |
Collaboration with East Bay Municipal Utility District Saves 3.5 Million Gallons of Fresh Water per Day
Chevron announced it has received an award for Recycled Water Customer of the Year at the WateReuse California Annual Awards event in Dana Point, CA. The Chevron Richmond refinery was nominated for the award by the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) in recognition of Chevron's water-saving efforts related to the Richmond Advanced Recycled Expansion (RARE) Water Project.
"We are very pleased to have been recognized with this prestigious award by WateReuse California for this most important award," said Mike Coyle, General Manger of Chevron's Richmond Refinery. "When the East Bay Municipal Utility District proposed joining with Chevron to build a new water recycling plant at our Richmond refinery, we knew it would help with our goal to better utilize scarce water resources. We appreciate EBMUD's acknowledgment of the project and we are grateful to have been nominated by them, and even more grateful to receive this wonderful recognition."
The Chevron - EBMUD collaboration saves 3.5 million gallons of fresh water per day. Chevron uses the recycled water in their boilers to produce steam, which is used to manufacture gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products. It takes about one gallon of water to process a gallon of crude oil and only extremely high-purity water can be used in the steam-making process.
"Recycled water from EBMUD cannot be used for drinking purposes," explained Coyle. "So substituting high-grade recycled water produced onsite for potable water we'd otherwise purchase from EBMUD helps make available more fresh drinking water for community use."
The RARE Water Project began construction in the summer of 2008 and was completed in July 2010. Treatment technologies such as microfiltration and reverse osmosis are used to produce recycled water that exceeds the requirements and rigorous standards set by the California Department of Public Health.
