Relationships are definitely shifting. The old "rules" and "roles" don't seem to apply, and many are seeking an evolutionary way of relating that is more genuine, authentic and resilient. Through a monthly community dialogue, we hope to inspire insights that support participants to create positive and healthy relationships, not just with their significant other, but in all relationships in their life. This dialogue is open to everyone, including couples and singles, gay or straight, young and old. |

Life of the World to Come: Darkness Falls Upon Us
|
NIAD
551 23rd Street
Through June 3rd
Darkness Falls Upon Us is the second in a three-part exhibition series, Life of The World To Come, that presents a preview of a future where work from disabled artists is viewed in the same light as pieces and projects from artists who may not have a diagnosis extreme enough to qualify them as "other." In reality, however, the show is not breaking new ground so much as making visible what is already underway. Artists with disabilities - from Willem De Kooning to Chuck Close - are already a part of the contemporary art world. But Close and De Kooning were already established before becoming disabled. The next logical step in the opening up of the contemporary art world would be the inclusion of artists with disabilities based on the quality of their work, but without the requirement of a prior pedigree.

"If one looks hard enough, one can usually see the order that lies beneath the surface." So says the young narrator of Chistopher Durang's autobiographical play. And the people that surround him, his relatives, force him to look awfully hard. Delving deeply into the complex, confused and comic lives of two families plagued by death, alcoholism, Catholicism and other hardships, The Marriage of Bette and Boo captures the joys and perils - what you embrace and what you endure - as a member of a family.
PLEASE NOTE: This show contains situations that may not be suitable for children, sensitive persons, or those unable to laugh in the face of life's worst tragedies.

Beyond Tradition: Art Legacies at the Richmond Art Center
| |
The Richmond Art Center 2540 Macdonald Avenue Opens Tuesday, April 12th through June 10th
The Richmond Art Center is celebrating 75 years as a dynamic and evolving arts organization. We are proud to mark this historical occasion with Beyond Tradition: Art Legacies at the Richmond Art Center. Founded in 1936, one year after San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Richmond Art Center has long established itself as a premier education and exhibition venue. The history of the art center has consistently exemplified the diversity and strength of Bay Area artists. The art center quickly became known and respected as a place to boldly present the latest developments in contemporary art. The early years of the center experienced an exceptional number of solo, group, conceptual and juried exhibitions, which included many artists who have gone on to great renown. This exhibit features work by more than 30 artists who either exhibited, worked, or taught at the center from the 1940s to the 1980s. |
