Blossoms
& Thorns
| |
Richmond Art Center 2540 Barrett
Avenue (entrance at
25th
Street) Through November 14th
Blossoms & Thorns:
The Legacy of Richmond's
Historic Japanese American Nurseries Featuring Richmond-based photographers Ellen Gailing,
Matthew Matsuoka, Fletcher Oakes and Ken Osborn. Curated by Emily Anderson and Donna Graves. An exhibition of contemporary and historic photographs and artifacts
exploring the Japanese American cut flower nurseries that began in Richmond
in the early 1900's and continued for over 100 years despite various challenges
including internment during World War II. The contemporary photos are the inspiration for this
exhibition. While the buildings fell into disrepair, the roses and carnations
continue to thrive and often are found bursting through the roofs and windows.
The contemporary photographers' images document the beauty of these
"ruins," as well as the profound tenacity of the plants and the
significance of the years of work that cultivated them. The exhibition also explores the remarkable legacy of
Japanese Americans who built a thriving community and flower industry in Richmond beginning over a
century ago. During WWII these families were forced into internment camps and had to leave their properties,
businesses and homes behind. In a few cases they were able to pass them on to
others to run for them until they could return. Several of the family businesses
were able to rebuild and continued for many years after the war despite
additional encroachments by the construction of Highway 80 and BART.
Eventually, federal policies that favored flowers imported from Latin America caused this once vital industry to lose its viability and the businesses
were shut down. Richmond holds the last
extensive historic flower nurseries built by Japanese Americans in California, but they
will soon be demolished to make way for affordable housing. "These nurseries are a rare legacy of an important
chapter in Japanese American history and in the heritage of our state."
Exhibit runs September 14 - November 13th.

One Small Story from Richmond's Hidden History. Japanese American Nurseries."
| |
Richmond Museum of History 400 Nevin Avenue Through October 24th Wednesday thru Sunday 1 pm to 4 pm.
This installation features photographs and archival objects
illustrative of the Japanese American cut-flower business that thrived in Richmond for most of the
20th century. The exhibition represents a "small story" of a complex,
partly-forgotten history of success and perseverance, focusing on three
families engaged in tending and selling a variety of flowers for local and
national consumption. Blueprints, account books, and a desk constructed during the
Japanese internment by Tom Oishi are just a few of the many items selected for
viewing. The exhibition is designed to be an instructive event for the visitor
interested in an important chapter in Richmond's
cultural and social history.

The Kaiser Shipyards, the most famous and productive
shipyards in the San Francisco Bay Area, serve as backdrop for RIVETS. In the past year, RIVETS has played to full
houses in four separate runs, and the
show's success prompted another run. According to Covington,
audiences will be treated to three new songs, and a much tighter book. The production team believes RIVETS is a
story of importance not only to those living in the Bay Area, but to people
across the country, and "look forward to that development." Covington was recently
honored with a 2010 Northern California Emmy Award for his work on the Robert Redford narrated documentary "Saving the Bay." While composing the music for RIVETS, he
juggled writing for the PBS documentary, and building the music for RIVETS. "Each time the show has been done, changes have been made,"
said McCarty, adding that visitors will also note the changes in the road to
get to the ship - "all paved, lined, lit
and clearly marked. And the riser style
seating has been added to the theatre which occupies one of the Ship's holds." The Red Oak Victory ship is the last surviving Victory ship
built and launched in the Kaiser Richmond Shipyard.
