Finn Gold Cup at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor
August 27-September 4

90+ Sailors from 27 different countries will converge on Marina Bay to determine who will be the World Champion in the Olympic Class Finn Sailboat.  The Finn is a 15' long, single-handed dinghy that has been used at every Olympics since 1952 and will appear again in London for the 2012 Olympics.  Many of the sailors racing in the Gold Cup next week are on their country's respective Olympic teams and hope to compete in the 2012 Olympics.

The Finn Gold Cup Racing on San Francisco Bay will bring world class racing to Richmond and Marina Bay.  St. Francis Yacht Club chose Marina Bay Yacht Harbor to be the regatta site due to the large launching facility and the close proximity to the race course just southeast of Brooks Island where the racers will experience the top notch sailing conditions San Francisco Bay is known for.  Many of the sailors have been practicing out of Marina Bay for the last several weeks as they ready for the start of racing and bringing an international flavor to this part of Richmond.  Racing begins on Sunday, with a practice race at 2pm.  The Gold Cup racing will start at 12pm and run from Monday, August 30 through Saturday, September 4.  Racing may be visible from Shimada and/or Vincent parks in Marina Bay.  More info: www.finngoldcup.com and www.stfyc.com.

Ten Best Lighthouses to Sleep in
August 14, 2010 by Jaclyn Liechti, SmarterTravel.com Staff

East Brother Light Station, Richmond, California

Lighthouses often conjure up romantic images, and the East Brother Light Station (EBLS) is no exception. To get to the house, you must take a boat to a small island in San Francisco Bay. Once you arrive, you're welcomed with a Champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception, and will learn a little bit about the history of the island and the 1874 lighthouse. After a four-course dinner, feel free to walk up the stairs into the lantern room that guides ships to this day. You can even head outside to the widow's walk, which offers 360-degree views of the bay.

When you're ready to get some sleep, nestle into one of four rooms in the main lighthouse building that are furnished with period furniture, then wake to a full breakfast-including the house special, Lighthouse French Toast Souffle-and a demonstration of the old foghorn operation.
Prices range from $295 to $415 per night and include a Champagne reception, four-course dinner, and breakfast.

Blossoms & Thorns: The Legacy of Richmond's Historic Japanese American Nurseries
Richmond Art Center,
2540 Barrett Avenue
September 14th - November 13th

Blossoms & Thorns: The Legacy of Richmond's Historic Japanese American Nurseries is an unique exhibition to be held at the Richmond Art Center with the City of Richmond's Neighborhood Public Art Program. The exhibition opens in September 2010.

This show of contemporary and historical photographs and artifacts documents the Japanese rose and carnation nurseries that began in Richmond in the early 1900's and continued for over 100 years. Partners in this first ever collaboration include members of the Japanese American community, historians, arts organizations and government entities.

The beauty of the roses, still thriving long after the nurseries that planted them have been closed, is the intriguing subject of four local photographers: Matt Matsuoka, Ellen Gailing, Ken Osborn and Fletcher Oakes. Their work inspired the exhibit, which will also include historical photographs and artifacts that describe the history of Richmond's Japanese American floral industry families, including their World War II internment.

A variety of public presentations will take place during the course of the exhibition.

Celebrate the Arts in Pinole
Saturday October 16th
11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where:  In the parking lot in front of the store at 1212 Fitzgerald Drive in the Pinole Vista Shopping Center.

You're invited to participate in Celebrate the Arts in Pinole. We're excited about having you in this event which has several goals.

Aaron Brothers-Pinole is sponsoring the event. Jason Goodwin, store manager, is very interested in supporting artists and becoming an integral part of the arts' community. By offering you this invitation, we hope to create long-term, positive relationships with local artists and arts' organizations.

This event is also an opportunity to promote the arts in West County. October is National Arts and Humanities Month when hundreds of arts organizations and communities across the nation celebrate. We are inviting Debbie Long, Mayor of Pinole, to issue the proclamation provided by Americans for the Arts. The celebration grew out of National Arts Week which was begun by the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts in 1985.

There is no charge for artists to participate in this event. As a participating artist, you will receive free archival mounting and professional assembly (a $50 value) if you decide to purchase of custom or ready-made frames on up to five pieces. This offer is good until the end of the year.  Visitors who purchase a participating artist's work will receive the same offer until the end of the year. Offer valid only at Pinole Aaron brothers. (There is no obligation for artists to purchase frames.)
