Ferry Point Loop of San Francisco Bay Trail
| | Friends of the Bay Trail in Richmond,
The buzz of excitement is growing as elegant Ferry
Point Loop Trail Guides begin appearing in western Contra Costa County mail
boxes. Kudos to Richmond Sanitary Services owned by Republic Services for
enclosing the trail guides with the quarterly bills sent out to their 56,000
residential and commercial customers.
When the trail guide arrives at your home, take it with you to enjoy this
seven mile loop of the San Francisco Bay Trail on foot or by bicycle. Although
design and construction projects are underway to close gaps, the route is
accessible with the exeception of the shoreline link between Shipyard 3 Bay
Trail and Brickyard Cove Road.
Click
here to learn about the design and construction projects now underway to
close the final gaps in the Ferry Point Loop. For example, the Port of
Richmond, Auto Warehousing Company and Transdevelopment Group have begun
developing the Shipyard 3 Bay Trail as part of the Honda Port of Entry Project,
and the City of Richmond's Engineering Services Dept. is designing two new trail
sections between Shipyard 3 and Ferry Point. Moreover, East Bay Regional Park
District's Board of Directors recently appropriated over $1million for improved
access to the mile long western shore of Miler/Knox Regional Shoreline between
Keller Beach and Ferry Point.
Profound thanks to David Moore <sincere@pointrichmond.com> of
Sincere Design for creating and maintaining TRAC's award-winning
website to provide this information.
Design and printing of the Ferry
Point Loop Trail Guide was made possible by generous financial contributions
from East Bay Regional Park District, National Park Service and Richmond
Convention & Visitors Bureau. The elegant guide was prepared by the same
talented team that prepared the Marina
Bay Trail Guide , i.e. design by Jan Brown of Spokewise Design with content,
writing and editing developed by Fraser Felter and Donald Bastin of TRAC's
Interpretive Subcommittee.

| |
Richmond Museum of History 400 Nevin Avenue Saturday, August 28th 5:00 pm
"Children's Art, Children's Words: Richmond, California 1943-1966" by Joe Fischer with about 200 illustrations
The children's art in the Richmond Museum of History, called a "national treasure," is perhaps the largest, well-preserved collection in the U.S.
The artwork was produced by children, ages two to twelve, during the years 1943 to 1966. It was a part of a large publicly funded program that consisted of fourteen child care centers. The collection was donated to the Museum for its exclusive use by Monica Haley, its art director for twenty-two years. She implemented an innovative philosophy of art and educational instruction. The program's major focus was on the creative potential of children.

Ten
Best Lighthouses to Sleep in
| August 14, 2010 by Jaclyn
Liechti, SmarterTravel.com Staff
East Brother Light Station, Richmond, California
Lighthouses often conjure up romantic images, and the East Brother Light
Station (EBLS) is no exception. To get to the house, you must take a boat to
a small island in San Francisco Bay. Once you arrive, you're welcomed with a
Champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception, and will learn a little bit about the
history of the island and the 1874 lighthouse. After a four-course dinner, feel
free to walk up the stairs into the lantern room that guides ships to this day.
You can even head outside to the widow's walk, which offers 360-degree views of
the bay.
When you're ready to get some sleep, nestle into one of four rooms in the
main lighthouse building that are furnished with period furniture, then wake to
a full breakfast-including the house special, Lighthouse French Toast
Souffle-and a demonstration of the old foghorn operation. Prices range from $295 to $415 per night and include a
Champagne reception, four-course dinner, and breakfast.

Blossoms &
Thorns: The Legacy of Richmond's Historic Japanese American
Nurseries
|
Richmond Art Center, 2540 Barrett AvenueSeptember 14th - November 13th
Blossoms &
Thorns: The Legacy of Richmond's Historic Japanese American
Nurseries is an unique exhibition to be held at the
Richmond Art Center
with the City of Richmond's Neighborhood Public Art Program. The
exhibition opens in September 2010.
This show
of contemporary and historical photographs and artifacts documents the Japanese
rose and carnation nurseries that began in Richmond in the early 1900's and continued for
over 100 years. Partners in this first ever collaboration include members of the
Japanese American community, historians, arts organizations and government
entities.
The beauty
of the roses, still thriving long after the nurseries that planted them have
been closed, is the intriguing subject of four local photographers: Matt
Matsuoka, Ellen Gailing, Ken Osborn and Fletcher Oakes. Their work inspired the
exhibit, which will also include historical photographs and artifacts that
describe the history of Richmond's Japanese American floral industry
families, including their World War II internment.
A variety
of public presentations will take place during the course of the
exhibition.
