January 15, 2011Dear , We hope you will enjoy this current issue of the Connection. Here you will find all the latest SWS news and information. The Connection will be delivered to your email inbox every two weeks. Feel free to forward the newsletter to interested community members using the Forward email link at the bottom of this newsletter, below our logo. They will then be able to subscribe to the newsletter from within the Connection you have forwarded. (This does not work if you forward from within Outlook or Gmail etc.) Annual Fund Update & ChallengeI am pleased and very grateful to be able to share some good news with you. We are already very close to our goal for this year's annual fund - we need only about $7,000 more in pledges to reach our goal of $60,000.
On behalf of all faculty and staff I want to use this forum to express appreciation for all who have already made a pledge to our annual fund - your ready support for our school and mission truly lifts our spirits and fills us with energy as we start the new year.
Now that our initial goal is almost in our grasp, I would like us to shift our focus to a different goal - full participation. Perhaps some of you may have felt in the past that a modest gift would not make a difference, and would not be appreciated.
Each gift does make a difference - many small gifts add up quickly! Each gift is appreciated - we understand that a gift of $10 for one family may be just as significant as a gift of $1,000 for another family and we do value each gift, no matter the size, as an expression of your support for our mission.
How do we achieve full participation? We have solicited a few donations specifically to further encourage ALL families to participate. As soon as we have counted 50 new donors who are participating in our Annual Fund for the first time, or a total of 150 donors, including new and existing donors, $2,000 will be added to the annual fund. As soon as we have 75 new donors or a total of 200 donors altogether, an additional $3,000 will be added to the annual fund.
An added benefit of a high level of participation is that grant-makers look at participation levels when deciding to support an organization, so every gift counts and makes a difference in this way as well.
How will your gifts be used? When we reach our annual fund goal of $60,000, we will have closed the gap in our operating budget between income from tuition and fees etc. and the actual cost of educating our students. Your gifts will allow us to fund, for example, an early grade school assistant, a middle school block relief teacher, high school musical staffing, and professional development.
When we receive additional gifts beyond $60,000, we will set up funds to help us pay for: 1. Contributions to faculty retirement (est. $15,000) 2. Renovation and expansion of the grade 1 and 2 playground (est. $15,000) 3. A small bus to help with field trip transportation (est. $15,000)
We invite you to express your support for our mission by joining the annual fund with a donation of a size that works for your family. Thank you! Gabi McCarthy |
House Parties Parents have asked if they can still RSVP even though the deadline has come and gone. Yes, you can! A deadline and early replies are very helpful for planning purposes, as you will surely understand, but please feel free to continue to RSVP here, where you will see the list of dates and locations that are available, including a new east-side option.
Did you choose March 19? If yes, please email Gabi - we received one entry for that date on which some of the information - name and email address - were distorted. A mystery! Questions? Email Gabi.
All members of our community are invited to join us at a house party as one way of participating in our annual fund. We look forward to this opportunity to joyfully build stronger connections that will sustain and support our school as we move forward. If you have already made a gift, please feel welcome to join us at a house party and simply enjoy the company of people who care about our school. If you prefer to send in a gift now, click here for the pledge form. Thank you!

Nurturing Our Faculty Through Professional Development The desire for faculty to continue learning and growing is deeply engrained in Waldorf philosophy, and SWS is grateful to be able bring experts to our school to facilitate this. Earlier this month, Betty Staley, the Program Director for Waldorf High School Teacher Education at the Rudolf Steiner College came to work with our high school teachers on topics such as the structure of the morning lesson, morning lesson books, and child development. Betty also gave a well attended talk at our grade school about how the Waldorf high school curriculum meets the growing adolescent. About 70 audience members from our school as well as other area Waldorf Schools were treated to a charming portrait of the changing nature of our children.

LISA AYRAULT INTRODUCES BETTY STALEY
| Last summer we were grateful for a another visit by Christof Wiechert, the head of the Educational Department of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. Christof worked with our faculty on the topic of Child Study, how to approach the observation of a child, on deepening their understanding of the child's development, and what specific symptoms might indicate.
We were happy to share some special sessions with Christof with Waldorf teachers from area schools.
|
What does 'Child Study' mean? In the past few years, Christof Wiechert, former Head of the Pedagogical Section at the Goetheanum (headquarters of the Waldorf movement in Switzerland), has guided our faculty through understanding the purpose, value and techniques of child studies. Child studies are unique to Waldorf Education, and a cornerstone of our pedagogical approach. They are instrumental not only in fostering in our faculty a solid understanding of a child's development, talents, and challenges, but also in furthering our faculty's observation skills, and shared understanding of how to best support the students.
At the grade school, every other week during the Thursday afternoon meeting, the faculty places one student at the center of their pedagogical conversation. In preparation for this discussion, the teachers attentively observe this student during the two week before the meeting, in class and on the playground, to better understand his or her work habits and social interactions. The child study discussion at the grade school meeting then focuses on understanding the student, and on how to best approach his or her particular challenges. Following a child study, recommendations may be made to the class teacher for special exercises in the class room, or for individual educational support, or a visit with our school doctor.
At the high school, every week a meeting is dedicated to discussing several students. The format is slightly different from that of the grade school child study, yet the purpose is the same: understand each student as profoundly as possible so as to best serve his or her needs. "Christof brings depth of insight and years of experience to his sessions in a light and charming way. I so enjoyed watching him work with teachers to uncover the truly important questions that help us to understand the deeper issues that effect children." Kate Golden, grade 4 class teacher.

Tuition For 2011-12 In the coming week, you will be receiving your 2011-12 Tuition Agreement and information about our Recommitment Process. We will also include the information found in this issue of the Connection. Dear Parents, As we reach the half-way point of this current school year, the time has come again to look ahead, to 2011-12. 2011-12 Tuition Our tuition levels for 2011-12 acknowledge the past years' efforts in getting our Parent &Tot, Preschools, and High School programs up and running. The higher tuition increase in the high school reflects the unique needs of our growing high school program, while the more conservative increase in our early childhood and grade school tuition levels take into consideration the need for steady improvements in materials, staffing, and facilities. In its 7th year, our preschool program is now well integrated in our early childhood department, and the 2011-12 preschool tuition is aligned with that of our kindergarten program. 2011-12 Budget Our school continues to grow, as illustrated in the Five Year Enrollment chart below. As more students join our classes, we also welcome new faculty members whose dedication and skills ensure the quality of our educational experience. Our 2011-12 preliminary budget reflects our plan to increase our current level of staffing, update our current campus to create some much needed space for classrooms and programs, further engage in a long-range site planning process, and continue on our trend to dedicate annual fundraising to development rather than as a factor in balancing our budget.
Our 2011-12 budget reflects our core values - students, faculty, organization and considers our school's maturity, and its need for long-term sustainability. We have made much progress in all areas of school life, as demonstrated through our accreditation process. (Find the Accreditation Report here.) To continue on this strengthening and deepening course, it is necessary for the school to secure the services of competent and enthusiastic faculty and staff members. As we move forward in the next few years, we can expect our tuition levels to align with those of other local independent schools. (See Tuition Information Table below.) In this context, our commitment to supporting our families is the guiding thread in our allocation of Financial Aid resources.

Tuition Discounts We have recently completed a three-year Tuition Discounts and Remissions study, which has resulted in a significant change in the way we will allocate tuition grants. Starting in 2014-15, all reductions in tuition will be considered on the basis of need, through our Financial Aid process. In the coming three years, reductions in tuition will remain as they currently are, giving faculty and staff who benefit from tuition remission and families who benefit from the sibling discount, time to get acquainted with our Financial Aid process. This decision is based on our wish to apply, in our administrative decisions, the same principles that inform Waldorf Education. In the economic area, the principle of brotherhood - consideration of economic abilities and needs rather than status - is according to R. Steiner the foundation of a healthy and compassionate approach.
We are proud of our journey and grateful for your commitment to our success. We know that our growth, our progress, and our plans entirely depend upon your commitment to Waldorf Education and to our school, and we thank you for your continued trust and support.

Focus On Staff Many of you may know Shelly McSweyn from your visits to the grade school office where she keeps everyone on track and everything in its place at the reception desk. Shelly was born and raised in Eastern Washington and moved to Seattle in 1976, where she managed and became the president of a large flooring company. In 1990 she started her own construction company and ran it until she decided it was time to spend more time with her family. After closing her business in 2005, she enjoyed working part-time for a naturopathic physician, and volunteering at SWS in many capacities, for example as class parent and as treasurer of the Parent Association. We are fortunate that Shelly agreed to join our grade school staff about a year ago.
Our community has greatly benefited from Shelly's incredible talents as the organizer of the Winter Faire. For the third year, Shelly has poured her heart and soul into making our Winter Faire the successful and warm event that graces our holiday season, and that adults and children alike look forward to.
Besides spending time with her family, Shelly loves to keep busy by being creative, mostly with gardening and various kinds of hand work: painting, knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

As you go through your garage you may find that you have three roles of duct tape, and you only really need one - sound famili ar? We encourage you to take the next couple of weeks to see what items from the wish list you might have on-hand to give to Tent City. We will be collecting your donations both at the high school and the grade school during the week of January 31. Look for collection and delivery details in the next Connection. SWS Talent Night - Just For Adults - Just For Fun - February 5 @ 7 pm Last year's event was very enjoyable and we want to again offer this opportunity to socialize as adults. Tuesday, January 25, 7-9 pm, Seattle University, Pigott Building Auditorium Free. You must register here by January 21. Thursday, February 10, at 7 pm Stroum Jewish Community Center, Mercer Island For tickets, go to communityofmindfulparents.com (Scroll down) We First Make Our Habits, And Then Our Habits Make Us We would like to remind you that Scrip programs are an easy way to support SWS while making your everyday purchases. Tapping into this otherwise lost income is accomplished in two ways. The most profitable way is for you to make it a habit to use scrip in your weekly grocery shopping. Currently we benefit from the generous PCC Scrip program which gives us 5% of your purchases. The second way is to go through a portal that links to our school every time you make an online purchase. Go to onecause.com, register an account linking you to SWS, and make a habit of using that portal to access thousands of venues: Amazon, Nordstrom, L.L. Bean, Lands' End, Ebay, HP, Dell, and more. When you come to the school for recommitment days, ask in the office to purchase a reloadable PCC scrip card. Currently, 15% of our families are involved in the PCC program, which last year generated over $10,000 for the school. We received another $3,600 through other vendors. Our goal is $17,500 this year, which supports the general operating budget. All income over that figure goes to the Parent Association. Imagine 100% of our families developing the habit of capturing dollars we already spend. Brad Keefe & Jim Krantz
