Welcome to the August edition of E-vangelist, a monthly E-Newsletter from the Communications Office of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.  All good things must come to an end, and that includes summer. As we near the end of August, our Diocesan principals, teachers and students are getting ready to begin another school year. We here at the Diocesan Administration Center are getting ready for a busy fall. Among the upcoming events are the annual Blue and White Mass, Bishop Joseph's Mass of Thanksgiving, the Catholic Life Conference and the annual Wedding Anniversary Liturgies. You can read more about some of these events throughout this E-Newsletter. May God bless you and your family in these final days of summer and always. The Bishop will give praise and glory to God for the recent milestones in his life, including the 50th anniversary of his Priestly Ordination, the 23rd anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination and his 75th birthday. Camp Z 2010Camp Zacchaeus 2010
Hundreds of kids once again enjoyed the faith and fun of Camp Zacchaeus this summer.  Sponsored by the Diocesan Youth Ministry Office, Camp Z is open to fourth through ninth graders and features daily Mass and prayer, crafts, swimming and more. It is held at Camp Sequanota in Somerset County. Two sessions were held -- July 25-30 and August 1-6. Bishop Joseph celebrated Mass at each session and spent time with the campers and counselors.  For a slideshow of Camp Z, please go to the Diocesan website at www.ajdiocese.org. Papal InsigniaBishop Blesses Papal Insignia
Bishop Joseph celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel in Loretto and blessed the Papal Insignia on July 25. Pope John Paul II designated Saint Michael the Archangel a Minor Basilica on September 9, 1996. Basilicas are considered the Pope's church. Bishop Joseph blessed the Ombrellino (an umbrella used to protect the Pope from the elements), Tintinnabulum (a bell mounted on a pole that signals the Pope's arrival), Coat of Arms and Papal Chair. In his homily, Bishop Joseph called the event historical for the Basilica Parish, the Diocese and Loretto. "It is appropriate that Saint Michael the Archangel be a Basilica because this is the cradle of our Faith," the Bishop said, referring to Father Demetrius Gallitzin's roots with the Parish. "It is a marvelous blessing for our Diocesan Church to have a place like this -- a place that reminds us of who we are."

Immaculate Conception ParishSatellite Campaign Reaches Goal
The Proclaim! TV Ministry Satellite Uplink Campaign has reached its $100,000 goal. Mr. Donald Kubovcik of Saint John Gualbert Cathedral Parish donated $25,000 to the effort, bringing the campaign to its completion. The satellite will allow the live weekly Mass to be broadcast around the country and the world. Father Chuck Bridges, Operations Manager of Proclaim! TV, said he hopes to broadcast by satellite by the end of the year. Proclaim! airs every Sunday at 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on WWCP TV FOX 8. The Mass at Saint John Gualbert Cathedral airs live at 11:00 a.m. -- one of the few live, hour-long Mass broadcasts in the country.

Immaculate Conception ParishBlue and White Mass
Bishop Joseph will celebrate the annual Blue and White Mass on September 11, at 5:00 p.m., at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona. The Blue and White Mass, which is held on or around the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, honors Blair County emergency workers, such as police and firefighters, and medical personnel, such as doctors and nurses. The Knights of Columbus Altoona Council 551 sponsors the Mass. Emergency and medical workers are encouraged to attend regardless of their Faith Tradition. "It's our 'thank-you' to them for what they do," said Leo "Butch" Winkler, a member of the Knights of Columbus and coordinator of the Blue and White Mass.  [Photo: Bishop Joseph poses with the Knights of Columbus and area emergency workers outside the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament after last year's Blue and White Mass.]

Immaculate Conception ParishPrayer Before the Crucifix

Behold, O kind and gentle Jesus, I kneel before you and pray that you would impress upon my heart the virtues of faith, hope and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. At the same time, with sorrow I meditate on your five precious wounds, having in mind the words which David spoke in prophecy: "They have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones." (Psalm 22)
