President's Message
"Oh, the thinks you can think..!"
I cannot seem to get that song out of my head! Its lyrics ring so true for our Fremont community. From working together to create the wonderful, elaborate drama production this past weekend, to striving to fund the Science & Technology Labs each and every year, we at Fremont think big thinks!
Thank you to the nearly 200 volunteers and the 220 performers who worked so diligently on the "Seussical, Jr." production. The sense of camaraderie was present throughout the past months, but was particularly apparent this past weekend. I hope it was a good experience for all involved.
This month marks the 8th year of the Support Our School (SOS) Campaign, our effort to raise the funds for the Science and Technology Labs. Please participate in any way that you can. Encourage your children to get involved! They can collect spare change, sell lemonade on the corner, or have a used toy or book sale. Ask them for other ways they may join in and feel a part of this important, massive community effort. If we all contribute in some way to the cause, I'm sure we will find Dr. Seuss' belief to be true..."Anything's Possible!"
Hope you have a wonderful month!
Sincerely,
Michelle Anderson

Baja Sonora PTA Mondays
Did you know that every Monday at Baja Sonora 10% of each purchase is donated to a local school?
That's right, every Monday Baja Sonora asks each customer to name a local school and then 10% of their purchase goes to that school. Some schools get a little, some schools get a lot.
So far this school year, Fremont has received $316.50 from Baja Sonora's PTA Mondays program! Let's make that number grow even faster.
Simply stop by either of Baja Sonora's two locations (Clark & Spring or Atlantic & 35th) on a Monday for lunch or dinner, mention Fremont when placing your order then sit back and enjoy a delicious meal and support all the fabulous Fremont PTA-sponsored programs at the same time! You can see their menu online at www.bajasonora.com.

Principal's Message
Congratulations! Fremont Elementary School
has been recognized for having earned the 2010 Elementary STAR School Award. The word STAR in this case stands for Student Success + Terrific Teaching = Academic Results. Earning the award is based on multiple criteria including significant growth in a federal measure of a school's progress called Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), positive gains in all areas for the school's subgroup populations, and significant improvement on the state assessment of a school's growth called the Academic Performance Index (API). From our capable students to a very competent teaching staff to the strong PTA and community involvement, the Fremont Falcon students continue to soar. At Fremont, our children's education is truly a team effort. Thank you for working together with us to support the success and well-being of Fremont students.
Bravo! The drama club has once again put on a spectacular production this year in the form of "Seussical" the musical. After months of planning and practice, the story, songs, sets, costumes, choreography, concession area, and all that went into the production resulted in a delightful and huge success. This has been a great opportunity for students to develop personal skills and talents which will carry them on to future endeavors. Thank you to director Sean McMullen and assistant director Karen Victor and the team of volunteers who are keeping theater alive at Fremont.
Thank you to all who are taking advantage of the valet parking in the morning to drop off students. Do remember to check and follow traffic and parking signs. Also, if you or your child notice an unsafe condition on or around the school, please immediately notify the office or remind your child to report it to a school staff member. If a situation needs to be reported outside of school hours, you can call the Long Beach Unified School District safety office at (562) 997-8101.

February 7 marks the beginning of our month-long SOS Check Drive to raise enough money to support, sustain and secure our Science and Technology labs. This effort is also known as SOS. In order to secure our program for next
year, and the year after, our goal is to raise $50,000 during the check drive or $150 per student or $300 per family. Please help us reach our goal. These labs are vital to our school and have proven to increase our API scores to first in elementary in the LBUSD! It's a nominal fee for a huge education for life!

When Karen Victor emailed me this summer to ask if I would like to be the PTA Drama Club Chairperson I thought...that sounds like fun. I realize now I had no clue about what I was getting into. Fun doesn't even begin to describe my life over the last few months. Blessed would be a much better word. I was given a backstage pass to the most amazing community of both students and parents. Whenever I felt like I may become overwhelmed by what I had to accomplish I was reminded that all I had to do was ask and there were any number of people willing to pitch in and help with anything from cutting out iron on badges, to painting sets, to teaching 30+kids to dance and sing. There are no words to express how grateful I am for this experience. The best I can offer is a very heart felt THANK YOU to the following people, as well as the entire Fremont Community.

Changes are coming to the salad bar!
Fremont has been fortunate to be a pilot school for LBUSD with its salad bar in the cafeteria since October. For the same price as a regular lunch, our children have had the added option of making their own, fresh salad every day.
In January, members of the school staff, parent volunteers, and representatives of the LBUSD Nutrition Services Staff met to evaluate the program's progress. It was determined that some changes would need to be made to limit expenses, encourage student use of the bar, and to enhance the ability of a salad bar to be placed at other schools in LBUSD. The team came up with a great option to increase the viability of the salad bar.
Beginning in February, the salad bar will become a part of the regular food line in the cafeteria, rather than an independent bar in the cafeteria. Children will still receive their choice of fresh vegetables each day. Mixed greens (variety lettuce, cabbage, and spinach), at least 3 additional vegetables (carrots, celery, cucumber, tomatoes, and broccoli), as well as 2 salad dressings (ranch and berry vinagerette) and raisins will be available every day. Still for the same price as a regular lunch, they have the option of fresh, healthy vegetables!
We have much to be proud of as a group! Fremont parents, Paul and Dana Buchanan spear-headed the momentum to get the salad bar at Fremont. Mr. Hammond was willing to take on the project, as were our cafeteria staff and PTA volunteers. The students have received it warmly. From our experience, the program has been fine-tuned and can now be transferred to other schools! Perhaps someday soon every school in the district will have a fresh salad bar in their cafeteria line? We sure hope so!
Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have given so generously of their time to staff the salad bar over the past few months!

Fremont may lose
Tanaka Farms program!

As a new cycle begins for Tanka Farms, we would like to bring to your attention some of the policy changes they are implementing for next year. If these can not be met, we will lose the program, and therefore, the contribution to SOS which comes through the 10% given back to the school by the farm.
- Minimum order of 10 boxes per cycle to assure delivery and program involvement
- Online purchase ONLY through their website, no more checks or payments through fremont-pta.org!
If we don't have 10 boxes per month ordered and paid for on-line through the Tanaka Farm website, by their due date, we will NOT get delivery of ANY boxes. Also, if we cannot sustain these numbers the program will go away completely.
For the past three years, Fremont families have been able to take advantage of organic "farm to table" produce. This great programs allows us to share with our children the importance of eating a well-balanced meal while introducing them to fruits and veggies they may not want to eat. With each delicious box purchased, Tanaka Farms gives back 10%! All proceeds go directly to our SOS fund which pays for the salary and benefits of both the Science & Technology lab teachers. In past years we have raised between $1,200 & $1,500!
So, if you would like to see this program continue to be offerred, please contact tanakafarms@fremont-pta.org to sign up or to get answers to any questions you may have. Orders for this year will continue to be placed through the pta website or flyers sent home.
Remember, if you're not sure how to prepare your new found Fruits & Vegies go online and try out new recipes!! Some of our favorite websites are:
