President's Message
The school year is well underway, and the PTA hit the ground running with programs and activities! A few particular volunteers are to be recognized for sharing their talents with our community during September. A warm thank you to Tanya Williams for her work on the Fall Social, again. What a fun, relaxed evening of friends, food, and music it was! Also, Jean Newkirk hosted another successful Book Fair. We appreciate her efforts and those of the numerous volunteers involved. Spirit Wear and Tanaka Farms are off to a successful start through the tireless efforts of Dorothy Rosnick. Margarita Lynch's willingness to take on the tough task of the annual PTA Membership Drive is truly appreciated. Thank you to every volunteer at Fremont who has participated in getting the year off to a great start!
In the month of October, the pace of activity will continue to pick up. Home Reading Club and Meet the Masters will begin, while the Drama Club and Chess Club will be charging ahead. The cafeteria will debut a salad bar for our kids; the first in the district! Student Picture Day, the annual Blood Drive, and New Family PTA Orientation will all take place on October 7. Our largest PTA fundraiser of the year, the Jog-a-thon, will take place on the 19th. The 4th grade will participate in the nutritional program, Days of Taste, and the entire student body will be invited to march in the annual Halloween Parade. Also, the PTA Directory, a very helpful resource, complete with the annual school calendar, staff and room parent registry, and contact information for all PTA Board Members and Program/Event Chair People will be released in the next week or so.
Of great importance this month is the conclusion of our annual PTA Membership Drive on October 6th. For just $10, you may show your support for all of the programs/events funded by the PTA and your commitment to our kids' school experience. So far, 287 members have joined, bringing us to 66% of our goal of 100% participation. Joining is easy! Simply link to www.fremont-pta.organd follow the prompts for membership. If you join by the October 6th, your family will receive a Legoland buy-one-get-one-free ticket voucher. Newly offered incentive of a Free Dress Day will be given to the grade level with the most number of students participating. Help your child earn that reward!
In the last Falcon Flyer, I mentioned that Fremont's PTA was recently recognized by the Long Beach PTA Council for 100 years of service to the school. Seeking 100% PTA membership is one way we will celebrate that accomplishment. Also, throughout the year, historical facts about the PTA -from 1909 to now- will be included in the Falcon Flyer. There are some wonderful photos, news clippings, and memories to share! The picture below is of the original school building, which was destroyed during the devestating earthquake of 1933. What a beautiful structure it was! Keep reading in this Falcon Flyer for some more current PTA memories, shared by our most recent past PTA President, Susan Tanaka.

Should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions throughout the year, please contact me at president@fremont-pta.org.
Sincerely, Michelle Anderson 2010-2011 PTA President

Principal's Message
Congratulations are in order. Each year the state releases accountability reports for our schools. The state's Academic Performance Index (API) is based on several standardized assessments during the school year. API scores range from 200 to 1,000 with 800 being a performance goal for schools. The school earns an API score each year showing its progress. With the efforts of our students, staff, parents, and our overall school community, Fremont Elementary has received an API of 953 for the 2009-2010 school year. Fremont has consistently been in the top few schools in the District, and for this past school year reached the number one position, a reason to celebrate. Thank you all for your support as we team together with Fremont families for the best for our students.
One of the reasons for our students' success is due to the work and focus of our wonderful PTA. The Fremont PTA is celebrating its 100th year, quite an accomplishment and heritage. I strongly encourage everyone to become part of this valuable organization. One simple yet important way where all can get involved is by becoming a PTA member. It's not too late. For just $10 you can show your support and become a member. Check in the school office for information or online at www.fremont-pta.org to join PTA.
Looking ahead, parent/teacher conferences will be held this year November 8-16. This is an opportunity to meet individually with your child's teacher to discuss progress to that point and share expectations for the remainder of the school year. Please plan to attend a November conference as we continue to collaborate with you in supporting your child. |

The Kinder Tree -
PTA History
Have you noticed the beautiful tree in the Kindergarten play ground? It is a podocarpus, and it is finally providing some much needed shade in that area of campus! I was pleasantly surprised to see our new crop of Kinders sitting underneath it and having their morning snack.
Six years ago when the class of 2010 was starting Kindergarten, this tree was planted by the PTA School Beautification committee, headed by PTA Alumni mom, Catherine Grace. At the time this was quite the accomplishment, because although many had been concerned about the lack of shade in that area for a few years, it was hard to come up with a cost- effective way to deal with the problem. The location of the playground and city and district regulations limited the options.
The PTA board at the time decided to implement a long-term solution by planting a young tree. They were able to secure a discount and free delivery from SY Nursery in Cerritos, and Catherine picked out the perfect tree. Almost all the people involved in ensuring the planting of the kinder tree are no longer at the school and their kids did not reap the benefits of the much needed shade, but their legacy lives on.

The Jog-A-Thon is Tuesday, October 19th. Last year, more than 400 kids participated and raised $42,000...that's $95 per student! Way to go! Our fundraising goal this year is AGAIN $42,000. Sponsor envelopes and permission slips will come home in the backpacks on Oct. 5th. A signed permission slip on file is required to participate. The 1st class who turns in 100% of their permission slips will win a Popcorn Party!

Will you make it your goal to match last year's average mark of $95 per child? Help your child collect sponsorships from family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, Fremont alumni families, church members. Be creative, have a yard sale or lemonade stand.
For those who own businesses, ask your CPA's, attorneys, and suppliers to help educate and prepare the next generation for our future. Ask your boss or business owner to help out, too! Finally, what about your dentist, pediatrician, eye doctor, accountant, landlord, dry cleaner, etc.? We appreciate your commitment to the students and our school programs, and wish you all the best as you try to raise at least $95 per scholar.
PLEASE come out and cheer on the students on October 19th! To volunteer, return the volunteer request form that contact our Volunteer Coordinator: Stephanie Pullman at pullmanphoto@charter.net.

Reflections
The PTA Reflections Program is a non-mandatory competition in the arts designed to enhance, engage and encourage creative and quality arts in students. Since 1969, the national PTA program has recognized through their local PTA artistic endeavors of millions of students... "Together We Can" is the theme for the 2010-2011 Reflections Program.
If you haven't already committed to a specific medium to express this theme- why not consider all? With such a universal theme, chances are you will be able to express it through more than one art form- photography, visual arts, musical composition, literature, dance choreography and film production. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!
All entries are due Monday, November 1. A reception showcasing the entries along with an award ceremony will be held on Thursday, November, 4.
An informational workshop will be held for the students on Thursday, October 7, after school. FAQs will be discussed, as well as general assistance regarding their specific entries.
All entrants may find the general rules and applicable forms by going to the link below. Participants are advised to carefully read the rules and requirements for each category to be in compliance for judging at all levels. If you have a theme for the 2012-2013 Reflections Program and would like to submit it to the California State PTA for consideration and a chance to win $100 if your theme is selected, the form is available by going to the link below. The theme entry must be submitted by mail and received by the State PTA Office by November 1, 2010.
We look forward to another amazing show of creative talent!

Words of Appreciation from
the Science Laboratory
Thank you to all the families and community partners that make the Fremont Science Lab such a huge success! An especially big thank you goes out to Kurt Schneider, father of 4th grader Sydney Schneider in Mrs. Durazzo's class. Kurt was the leader of the first campaign to save the Science Lab when LBUSD funding was lost and has been generously supporting the lab ever since.
Just in the past two years, Kurt has donated several thousand dollars to help the Science Lab purchase valuable educational supplies. The life-size skeleton and human body torso with removable organs was a generous donation to the lab last year, as were the baking soda and vinegar rockets that students enjoyed launching during their unit study on space.
This year, Kurt provided funding that enabled the science lab to purchase a variety of hands-on science kits to further enrich and excite our students as they learn about rocks and minerals, electricity, magnetism, solar energy, motors and generators, fossils, dinosaurs, simple machines and forces of motion. If your child comes home excited about science, chances are they had the opportunity to use one of the many kits purchased from XUMP.com through the generous donations from Kurt Schneider.
Xump.com is also a community partner of Fremont, located in Signal Hill. Xump provides Fremont with sizeable discounts on our science purchases, as well as donates liberally to our science raffles during Family Science Night and the Fremont Science Fair. Keep your eyes open for flyers that come home, because Xump hosts really cool Family Science Saturdays at their Signal Hill location for free!
As you can see, our Science Lab is such a great success because of all the wonderful support it receives from our families and community partners. Our school's district and state science test scores prove how successful students can be with great teachers, families and a community supporting them! |

Parent participation is always needed in the classroom for these projects; instruction is provided to teachers and volunteers at 1:30 on the same Thursday as the assembly.
Supplies are provided in the library. If you'd like to offer your help (no artistic talent needed, really!) feel free to contact your child's teacher or Roberta Jeanette at rjeanette@gmail.com. |
