President's Message

Welcome to the 2010-2011 School Year! I hope your family enjoyed a relaxing, fun summer!

This past June, the Long Beach Council PTA presented the Fremont PTA with a certificate of recognition for over 100 years of service to Fremont Elementary School. What an impressive achievement! Our school has such a rich history of excellence, and the PTA has had a large part in that. From creating enrichment programs for the students & families, to offering countless volunteer hours, to funding staff and labs that the district can no longer afford, the PTA has been a constant, proactive support for the school. We have a great deal to be proud of as a community!

To celebrate and acknowledge that 100 years of service to the school, I ask each one of you to join the PTA!  Let's achieve 100% participation by having at least one person from each family and every staff member in the Fremont community join. There is power in numbers! In this time of continued financial crisis for both the State of California and the Long Beach Unified School District, 100% membership will show a unified force of advocacy and commitment to our kids.  In addition, you will help fund the numerous programs sponsored by the PTA and secure yourself a vote at all PTA meetings.

Joining is easy! Simply link to www.fremont-pta.org and follow the prompts for membership. If you register on-line by September 15, it is only $7! After the 15th, or by joining through the envelopes being sent home today in your child's backpack, it's just $10 per member. A small price to pay to show your support for Fremont!

Speaking of www.fremont-pta.org, have you had a chance to check out our new PTA website? Thank you to Susan Tanaka (former PTA president) and Jennifer Scharnikow (PTA Communications Director) for the numerous hours they have spent creating this user-friendly and informative site.  There are many resources on the site, including the school calendar, PTA program information, a list of community partners, and much more. Check it out regularly to see what's new.

Your PTA Executive Board and Program Chairpersons have already been hard at work, planning for the year ahead.  Please join us at our 1st PTA meeting of the year next Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 6:30pm in the auditorium.  We will be discussing upcoming programs/events and voting on our budget for the school year.

I look forward to working with you through this school year! Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions, concerns or suggestions at president@fremont-pta.org

Sincerely,
Michelle Anderson
2010-2011 PTA President

Principal's Message

It is with great pleasure to welcome each of you to the 2010-2011 school year. I hope that your family has been able to enjoy a refreshing summer and everyone is ready for a successful year ahead. Teachers and staff have been diligently preparing for this school year.

A new school year also brings its unique changes. As you are out and about the campus you may notice some new faces. New to Fremont Elementary School are counselor's clerk Susan McNeely, school psychologist Nina Sawaya, nurse Jann Jeffrey, and media assistant Doug Gerow who will serve as our librarian. Please warmly welcome these new additions to the Fremont community.

New Fremont families had the opportunity to preview our school at the New Student Orientation. Thank you to the PTA for providing refreshments for our newest members of the Fremont family.

On a calendar note, please do plan to attend Fremont's Back to School Night for grades 1- 5 on Wednesday, September 22 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. This is a time for you as parents to come visit your child's classroom and receive key information that will be helpful throughout the year. It will be a wonderful way to start off on the right foot and begin teaming together for your child's success.

VIPs...classroom help

"How can I help?  I don't have much time!..."

 VIP!
So many ways to do it...make it work for you!
Support your child's teacher by volunteering in their classroom!   There are no teacher's aides in the classrooms, and with the increase in class sizes this year, your time will be even more appreciated!   Sign up to chaperone a field trip.  Volunteer for an hour or so on the day of the Jog-a-thon.  Come in and read to the classroom every once in awhile.  Offer to cut and sort learning materials at home.  If you have the time, set up a regular day/time to come in and help where needed.  Whatever time you can offer, it will be welcomed.  Share your talents, your time, and see the pride on your child's face as you do so!

Need to update your TB test for VIPing?
If it's been 4 years since your last test, you do!

"PTA", "JAT", "SOS"...What's With All the Acronyms?

"As our kids return to Fremont this September to master their English language skills- new Fremont parents will get an education as well...mastering "Fremont-speak" that is!

The "Fremont-speak" I'm referring to are acronyms commonly heard around school all year long...PTA (Parent Teacher Association), JAT (Jog-a-thon) and SOS (Support our School) to name a few. Outlined below is a quick definition.

LBEF - (Long Beach Education Foundation) A non-profit, volunteer-driven foundation which helps with grants and other key assistance to local schools, raising funds through employee and community contributions. In Fremont's case, SOS money is deposited into our account at LBEF and it's used to cover the cost of our Labs.

LBUSD- Long Beach Unified School District.

PTA
- The Parent Teacher Association is an active group of members who raise money to fund, build and maintain projects to benefit our children. Becoming a member does not obligate you to the PTA, however, it allows you to vote on important school matters!

JAT - (Jog-a-thon) JAT is Fremont PTA's largest school-wide fundraiser which usually takes place each October. Students can earn money for Fremont by soliciting donations from friends and family (as sponsors) either per lap run or as a flat donation. Students can earn prizes for most laps run and most money raised. Fremont has raised approximately $45,000 in the past several years with almost 100% student body participation -- a high achievement for a school our size (430 students.) All JAT monies raised fund PTA programs such as Meet the Masters (educating students in the Arts), Drama Club, and Family Science Night.

SOS
- (Support Our School, Science & Technology Labs) Fremont is the proud home of two labs: Science and Technology. All grade levels receive Science and Computer Lab instruction each week. The labs and lab teachers' salaries were originally funded by LBUSD but are now funded in their entirety by the support of Fremont parents, friends and the community. Last year, Fremont received an astounding $60,000 donation from Nien-Ling Wacker, grandparent of a Fremont student and CEO of Laserfiche, a Long Beach-based technology firm. All donations to SOS go directly to the Long Beach Education Foundation (LBEF) to execute funding the Labs. The largest SOS fundraiser is the SOS Check Drive each Spring. Additionally, the Fremont PTA contributes roughly $30,000 each year to SOS. The survival of our Labs relies completely on donations.

To make a donation via Paypal to both the PTA and SOS or for more information please visit our web-site at www.fremont-pta.org.

Remember support our PTA programs in the Fall and SOS for labs in the Spring!

Home Reading Club

Get a reward for doing your homework!

Beginning October 1, the Fremont PTA will be back in action. Your child has to simply read 20 days out of the month, for either 20 or 30 minutes (grade level determined) and they'll receive a book to keep from the PTA! The vast majority of the books are brand new, purchased through Scholastic Books. However, gently used books are always welcomed. Your donations may be placed in the Home Reading Club Book Drop box, located in the office by the PTA Mailbox throughout the year.

Always in demand:
Early Readers, Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, Fairy chapter books, Puppy Place, Warriors, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Goosebumps.

Thank you for your support!
