Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday. We had a very low key 2 weeks in the Tanaka household. It was a welcome change from all the running around that we usually do.
The lead up to the holidays was especially busy because I have three kids in three different schools and in three distinctively different stages of their lives (a preschooler, a 5th grader and a 7th grader). Although we are always busy, the month of December was especially full of sporting events, concerts and parties.
With so much going on there were many opportunities for me to fail and to feel like a loser mom. Unfortunately the child that I failed most during this busy time was my youngest Max.
Although I have many responsibilities at Fremont, after so many years being here and the fact that I am so involved, I felt the pressure of the responsibility but I didn't feel overwhelmed. My 7th grader attends Rogers and participates in many extra curricular activities. Although it was a crazy time, she takes on much of the responsibility and will remind me of her game, meeting, concert ect. Additionally this is her 2nd year in middle school so I was familiar with the routine.
Max attends a wonderful preschool that is just about the happiest place in Long Beach. This is his first year there so we are not yet familiar with all the activities and traditions. Not only do they have wonderful activities for the kids at the holidays but they communicate the nature, requirements and schedule of those events very effectively. Unfortunately one would actually have to read those communications and absorb the content to be able to be an effective participant. Although we participated in most of the activities, I felt that I was always in crisis mode and did not know what was going on. In other words I felt like a loser mom.
This is common for people who are new to a school and / or who are very busy and are not involved in the planning of activities. This is how I felt as a new parent at Fremont and this is probably how many of you feel about being at Fremont right now.
Fremont is a wonderful school but a demanding one. We have so many activities. We are always asking for money, volunteer hours, to come to events, to donate food, to work in the classroom and to come to meetings. It can be overwhelming to keep track of the calendar much less all the other information that is coming to you from the school and the PTA.
My New Years Resolution as PTA president is to be more aware of that. I can not promise you that we will stop asking for things, but we will try to be more effective with our communication. Additionally please feel free to email, call or approach me (that's why I included my picture this month), another board member or your room parent with any question.
If you forget an event or to make a donation or attend a meeting, just know that we all contribute in different ways and it would be impossible to do everything. The fact that we are involved at all and that we are all trying our best proves that we are not loser parents.

Happy New Year to all! I hope that the vacation break has been a refreshing one filled with special moments with family and friends. A thank you goes out to our vocal music teacher Mrs. Vinnard for a most enjoyable Choral Winter Concert that helped those in attendance get into the spirit of the season. We look forward with anticipation to the wonderful accomplishments that our Fremont students will show the rest of the year. Continue collaborating and communicating with the classroom teacher to provide the support for your child as was discussed at your parent/teacher conference last November. The second trimester will end on March 17 and progress report cards will be sent home at the end of March. We very much appreciate our continued partnership in working with you and your child as we launch into 2010. Welcome back and all the best to each of you for a prosperous new year.
