4CORE's A-133 Audit

4CORE recently underwent an A-133 Audit as part of a federal requirement for non-profits who receive over $500,000 in funding annually.

4CORE is proud to have been reported with no significant findings. This is unusual for a relatively young organization and is a testament to ability of 4CORE to handle and track large grants and funds.

Resource News You Can Use

Greetings!

Spring has sprung and it is the perfect time of year to get your home or business upgraded with energy efficiencies and/or renewables! Don't forget to "reduce before you produce" and make all the conservation and efficiency adjustments you can before looking to renewables.

4CORE Moving Forward

Gregg Dubit appointed Interim Executive Director

Gregg Dubit, 4CORE Weatherization Program Manager, has been appointed Interim Executive Director of 4CORE as Aileen Tracy departs at the end of this month.

Gregg was hired in September of 2009 to run the Weatherization Assistance Program for the southwest Colorado region. His leadership has gained 4CORE state-wide notoriety in enlisting subcontractors to provide weatherization services, successfully creating jobs for the region and producing high-quality work.

Gregg has been in Southwest Colorado for over 20 years.  His previous experience includes commercial energy auditing, residential services network training and certification, residential general contracting, residential real estate inspection services, high school math and science teacher, former ski patroller, and aged outward bound instructor.

Kirk Coppinger, 4CORE Assistant Weatherization Program Manager, has been appointed temporary Weatherization Program Manager. Kirk's background is in Commercial Construction, including the Springs Hotel's new building and the Sky Ute Casino project.  He has been involved in heavily themed exterior building skin projects including the Wynn and three Residences at MGM towers in Las Vegas, a new facility for the oldest dental school in the nation in Washington DC, and the University of Maryland's Comcast Basketball Arena.

Resource Energy Action Plan

Now available!

The REAP Advisory board has finalized the Resource Energy Action Plan for southwest Colorado.

The Resource and Energy Action Plan (REAP) consists of four phases:
  • Phase One entails assessing energy use, community projects and developing the REAP Strategy, a guide to multi-jurisdictional energy action planning. The Strategy provides a framework to facilitate and streamline multi-sector collaboration in our region's efforts to effectively manage resources, reduce energy costs, and meet energy and water usage reduction goals.
  • Phase Two adds Action Plan details to the Strategy document.
  • Phase Three involves reassessing existing water conservation plans and energy and building codes that may result in modifications to proposed REAP Action Plans. And finally,
  • Phase Four involves engaging networks in Southwest Colorado to implement the plan.

Appliance Rebates

The Recharge Colorado ENERGY STAR Appliance Program is currently open once again and accepting new reservations. Approximately $200,000 is available on a first come, first serve basis. The program offers rebates for ENERGY STARŪ appliances, including clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, storage water heaters and boilers. The GEO anticipates that funds will be exhausted quickly, and the program will be closed again when this happens. Be sure to review all rebate details prior to purchase as not all ENERGY STAR appliances qualify. Check for updates here  or contact the Recharge Colorado Call Center for updates at 1-800-462-0184.

Partnering with LPEA

Highlighting a 4CORE Coalition Partner

La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) is a key 4CORE coalition partner and was integral in the organization's formation, providing volunteer hours, counsel and funding. Not merely "the electric company," LPEA offers a variety of programs designed to save its members both energy and dollars.

LPEA, singled out by the Department of Energy for a Green Power Leadership Award in 2010, actively promotes renewable energy through its Green Power program and facilitates financial opportunities for members installing renewable systems. LPEA energy management specialists provide complimentary assessments for both residential and commercial customers, and currently are working with businesses to "change out" their old energy-guzzling fluorescent lights for more efficient models.

The electric cooperative has also organized an on-going "Free Information Series" with topics ranging from renewables to weatherization. To learn more, and to sign-up to receive additional information, visit www.lpea.coop.

Energy to Evolve

By Anne Pesata, 4CORE Intern

I grew up in Dulce, New Mexico, the sole municipality within the boundaries of the Jicarilla Apache reservation. That experience offered me a rich cultural background and a strong sense of place and family. There are a multitude of issues that plague the community, one such issue is that of housing quality and availability.

Without pause I categorize the availability of housing on the reservation as grossly inadequate and the general quality of existing homes as substandard and inefficient overall. A survey of various tribal members, including directors of the housing departments in Dulce, and every single person surveyed felt housing availability on the reservation was inadequate and an issue in need of a strong-footed solution.

Former employee of the Jicarilla Utility Authority, Sashiin Vicenti, who oversaw the installation and integration of new modular homes into our community, described the problems with the new housing as follows:

"Every thing that could possibly go wrong did. Poorly constructed foundation caused the walls to start tearing apart, and there were cracks in the floors and ceilings as well. There was no heating in one room, and excessive heat in another, condensation would accumulate and mold would start growing..."

Newsletter Challenge Question

Explain the difference between R value and U value? Why are windows rated for their U value?

The first person to correctly answer this question will win an energy saving prize from 4CORE. Prizes and winners to be announced in next month's newsletter. Send responses by the 20th!

Last month's Question:

2 part question~ Compare an incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent -

  2. What % of energy input goes into heat production?

The Answer is...

90% of the energy output of a CFL is light and 10% is heat. An incandescent bulb is the opposite. 90% of the output is heat and 10% is light.
