It's Easy To Be Green in the Summer
Excerpt from the Energy to Evolve Blog
By Beverly McAllister, Intern

Living green is an omnipresent theme here in Southwest Colorado. Since beginning my Internship at 4CORE, I have discovered that although there are many ways my lifestyle supports a conscious approach to zero waste living, there are always new ideas to employ toward this goal. The summer season offers a variety of opportunities to improve our efficient use of resources.

One obvious change is to use alternative transportation while the weather is cooperative. The Clean Commute Week, organized by the City of Durango in June, encouraged many alternatives to diminish our reliance on less efficient methods of transportation, and promote cleaner ones. For summertime fun and a healthier lifestyle, participate in zero carbon activities such as utilizing mass transit, walking, biking, and sharing rides. Attend the 3rd Annual Verde Fest in Cortez, CO or the 4 Corners Green Living Expo in Durango,O for lots of product vendors, sustainability advocates, and fun!

Reducing our footprint by using less electricity can be accomplished a number of ways. To help fund sustainable energy sources you can purchase a Green Power Block from local electric providers La Plata Electric Association and Empire Electric Association.

4CORE Weatherization Hits 100
by Amanda Saunders, Intern

WeatherizationThe 4CORE Weatherization Team has successfully weatherized 100 homes in the time period from September 2010 to June 2011. Despite being new to the work, the passion of the team has accomplished greatness.

And they aren't finished yet- the Governor's Energy Office has granted 4CORE funds to continue their weatherization work for another year. With a year of experience under their belt, the Weatherization team is planning to almost double their quota, with a goal of weatherizing 180 homes this upcoming year.

The Weatherization Program provides free weatherization services to qualified residents in Archuleta, Dolores, Montezuma, San Juan and La Plata County. With grant money from the GEO, 4CORE makes cost-effective, energy-efficient improvements and upgrades to the homes of qualified individuals, at no cost to the homeowner. These improvements enable homeowners to lower their monthly energy costs, thereby saving them money and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

The benefits of the 4CORE weatherization program are widespread, as local sub-contractors are used to complete the weatherization services. This keeps money in the local economy and provides employment opportunities to county residents.

The biggest impact of weatherization is on those residents who receive the services. Weatherization services improve the comfort and value of a home. These services enable low-income residents to live in a safer, healthier home, in addition to saving them money on their utility bills. The gratitude of weatherization recipients has been widespread and heartfelt, fueling the drive of the Weatherization team to continue their hard work.

Apply for weatherization service by visiting 4CORE Weatherizationor by calling Heather at 970-259-1916.
4CORE Staff Selected for National Leadership Program

Cori AndreattaThe U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) selected Cori Andreatta, Program Specialist at 4CORE, to participate in its 2010 Executive Energy Leadership Program along with 19 other representatives throughout the United States.  NREL's Energy Executives Leadership Program ("Energy Execs") is a premier leadership program focused on educating business, community and government leaders about clean energy solutions.

Energy Execs is a five month program enabling "energy ambassadors" and executive decision-makers throughout the United States a comprehensive study of renewable energy resources and energy efficiency technologies. Monthly technology education sessions are held covering topics such as renewable utility applications, biofuels, transportation and energy efficient building applications.  Emphasis is on future energy markets and analysis tools for renewable energy and energy efficiency applications.

Briefings by NREL technology experts, research laboratory tours, and visits to field applications are part of the classroom experience. The program is geared toward executives with the ability to influence energy strategies in their organization or community. At the conclusion of the program, participants present a viable project appropriate to their organization.

Cori Andreatta joined the 4CORE team in April 2009 to promote renewable energy and efficiency across southwest Colorado's five-county region. She has a degree in Computer Information Systems from Fort Lewis College.
GEO Energy Grant
Governor's Energy Office
The GEO anticipates releasing the following grants in July of 2010.

High Performance Building Program Grant
- Mid July
These grants will fund soft costs associated with achieving High Performance Design for partners accepted into the High Performance Building Program. Funds can be used for such tasks as enhanced commissioning, third-party building rating system certification costs, energy modeling as a design tool and other fees that might otherwise prevent a partner from utilizing these services to their full extent.
Resource & Energy REAP
Action Plan Update
