Energy News You Can Use
Greetings!

It is the season for new growth...planting, re-"tooling", re-modeling, or building new homes. 4CORE has helpful information to make your home or business the most efficient it can be.

A bit of upfront investment in time can save you lots of money and energy in the future, as well as create a comfortable space for where you hang your hat!

There are lots of opportunities this month to learn about constructing new homes or buildings, how to retrofit or remodel existing buildings, and what incentives are out there to make it all easier on your pocket book. Read on to learn more!
Landscape and Shade to Save Energy
Passive Ways to Keep Cool in the Summer

If you are planting, landscaping, or gardening this spring, why not add some plants to keep you cool? Natural vegetation and shading devices block solar gain and exterior shading is generally more effective than interior shades (plant trees on the southern side to shade your home). Deciduous trees on the west and east side of the house that do not cast trunk or branch shadows during the winter months are recommended.

Non-live shading can also be incorporated, but needs to be colored appropriately: light for diffuse daylight and dark for maximum heat gain reduction. Movable shading is more expensive, but more efficient than fixed.  Interior shading is best for glare relief and should be light-colored and adjustable (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), 2004).

ShadingTo ensure solar gain throughout the cold winter months while providing shading in summer, shade south-facing glass horizontally. Use this horizontal shading tool to learn more about what is right for your home or business.

Builders partnering with developers who plan an entire community or subdivision can position homes to take advantage of southern exposures.  They can increase solar gain, prevent solar interferences, and provide appropriate shading.

Recharge CO Rebate Program
Colorado Consumers Reserve More Than 25,000 Rebates Since April 19

Colorado consumers responded vigorously to the launch of 'Recharge Colorado,' reserving more than 25,000 rebates through more than 75,000 visits to www.rechargecolorado.com and more than 16,000 calls to the call center in the opening week of the campaign that launched April 19. The enormous interest in rebates for energy efficient appliances, solar power and other energy upgrades created an economic spark for retailers and contractors providing energy-saving services.

The rebate program, combined with federal tax credits, cut the cost of a solar hot water system in alf for many customers, drawing interest from past prospects who had previously been unable to afford a system. Rebates were cooped up statewide, with great interest along the highly populated Front Range, but with strong response in rural and mountain counties as well, in areas including Routt, La Plata, Montezuma, Chaffee, Montrose, Teller, Yuma and Delta counties.

Homeowners are urged to take advantage of many home efficiency rebates still available as well as rechargecolorado.comtools to find local energy incentives and service providers. Here is an update on the status:
