Energy Star National Building Competition

EPA is presenting the first coast-to-coast contest to save energy and fight global warming in commercial buildings. ENERGY STAR partners are invited to nominate one or more of the facilities they own or manage from across the United States.

Approximately a dozen contest participants will be selected by EPA and will "work off the waste" through improvements in energy efficiency with help from EPA's ENERGY STAR program. The building that reduces its energy use the most on a percentage basis will be recognized by EPA as the winner.

Applications are due by February 12th.

February Grants

Energy Managers for BOCES Early February
This program will provide energy managers to school districts through the BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services) model. The grants will provide matching funds to support four full time energy managers with the intent that the position will be funded outside of this grant program after one year. The grant opportunity will be availed to all BOCES in Colorado.

Community Marketing Grants Mid-February
Funding for non-profits, businesses, local governments and utilities that wish to assist the GEO with its public outreach efforts throughout the state.

ENERGY STAR Mortgage Grants Late February
Funding for lenders and banks located in Colorado to offer interest rate reductions for homeowners that purchase an ENERGY STAR New Home, retrofit with ENERGY STAR products or meet prescriptive requirements determined by the GEO.

Please see the Governor's Energy Office Funding website for more information.
What's up with Weatherization?

Amanda at Manna Soup KitchenThe Weatherization Program has been moving in full force since September partnering with Housing Solutions for the Southwest and the Southwest Conservation Core.  4CORE has recently been graced with an intern, Tom Zajicek, who is rapidly learning the weatherization ways and helping with audits, work orders, and inspections.

We just partnered withthe Fort Lewis Environmental Center and Manna Soup Kitchen in hosting a Caulk 'n Seal Party on January 30th at the Manna Soup Kitchen.  Our goal was to involve the community in weatherization while demonstrating some low cost measures as well as improving the Manna Soup Kitchen.

Over 20 homes have been weatherized to date in our five county area. In addition, there are over 70 approved applications.

Clients have been very pleased with the improvements made on their homes and are feeling much more comfortable since their home was weatherized. The 4CORE weatherization team is looking forward to continuing our progress in serving our region.
Meet the Interns

Thomas ZajicekTom Zajicek and Linnea Decker are the two newest members of the 4CORE team.

Tom is interning through the Rocky Mountain Senior Community Service Employment Program. He moved to Durango two years ago from Ithaca, New York.

His interest in green building and energy efficiency led him to choose 4CORE for an internship. He is presently being trained in weatherization, including energy audits and inspections. In addition he is working on client utility data, and developing a respiratory safety program.

Tom's varied previous experience includes home building, field biology, outdoor education, and industrial roped access inspection. When not working Tom is off to the mountains, canyons and deserts of the four corners area.

D. Linnea DeckerLinnea is interning through the Environmental Science Community Internship at Fort Lewis College. Linnea is a Colorado native living in Montezuma County, and attends Fort Lewis College as a full-time student working on a Bachelor's of Art degree in English/Writing and Environmental Studies/Policy and Culture.

Her interests, not surprisingly, reside in spending as much time in the Colorado wilderness as possible snowshoeing, hiking, biking and writing about nature.

If you are interested in interning or volunteering with 4CORE, please email us.
