What's New With the Calgary Ski Club This Winter?
By Cindy Tester, CSC Nordic Co-Director and Learn To Loppet Instructor
The Learn To Loppet Program
In case you haven't heard, the Club's Nordic program teamed up with the University of Calgary Athletic Department & Campus Outdoor Centre to offer the Learn To Loppet Program from October to March. Alasdair Fergusson, Club President, initiated this new venture for the Club and Flora Giesbrecht and Cindy Tester were Nordic Ski Instructors. Twenty participants joined to get fit and train for the Club's Lake Louise Loppet on March 7.
L2L Started With Dryland
The first two months involved a variety of weekly wellness and sport related seminars followed by a dryland training session led by Fitness Instructors from the University of Calgary. Fitness testing was done in the beginning and end of this period to monitor flexibility, strength and endurance. The trainers did a great job of getting everyone into shape before the ski season started in December.

L2L On Snow
Once the snow arrived, the group hit the slopes. Some participants had never cross-country skied before while others have been skiing for years and joined to improve their classic technique and challenge themselves to do a loppet. The class has been diligently meeting every Tuesday night at COP and Saturdays for a day trip to various trails such as Canmore Nordic Centre, Lake Louise, Cascade Fire Road, Pocaterra and Ribbon Creek.
L2L at the Golden Huckleberry Loppet
Ready to test their skills, four skiers from the class raced in the Golden Huckleberry Loppet which was part of the day trip to Golden on January 31. Everyone finished the 11 km race and our group won three medals.
Thank You!
It has been a very rewarding experience to work with such a motivated and fun group of adults and one high school student. We are very excited to have these new members join the Club this season and we wish you all the best in the the Loppet this weekend! A special thanks goes to Alasdair for all of his hard work in getting this program off the ground and to our coaching staff, Gillian Savage-Knight, Duncan Kenyon, Mark Kudryk, Dave Bejzyk, and Ron Schramm for assisting with practices and day trips. |

Race Preparation
Tips From Our Learn To Loppet Participants
Checklists! Make a list of all the kit you will need so you can tick everything off as you pack (preferably the night before). Include even the obvious things like skis, poles and boots. I have been doing this ever since my first triathlon when I turned up without a cycle helmet! This will lead to a far more relaxed race morning.

The juniors and adults getting ready to start the Lake Louise Loppet
Get There Early! Get to the race early so that you have plenty of time to warm up and test your wax (and re-test a couple of times).
Clothing: Make sure that you aren't wearing too many clothes for the race, but have warm clothes to put on at the finish, because you will cool off quickly!

When Is Klister Appropriate?
Featured Article By CSC Coach David Bejzyk
Klister is a type of very sticky grip wax that has the consistency of honey. It comes in a number of types of containers including tubes (much like a toothpaste tube), sprays, and press and rub type applicators.

Klister is used when the tracks are too slippery for regular grip wax to grip the snow. (The snow is so smooth that it can't embed itself into regular grip wax and provide grip.) If the tracks are slightly glazed (have only sporadic shiny patches when you look down the length of the track), you should probably try regular grip wax before reaching for the klister. If you can't get adequate grip with regular grip wax then it's time to reach for the klister. Just scrape off the grip wax that you just tried and apply klister.
