CSC Update!
Greetings!
It's the beginning of March and CSC is still going strong with weekend trips, day trips and our signature race, the Lake Louise Loppet this month! You can still register on race day so get those skis waxed if you haven't already. To give you an idea of how busy the past few months have been with CSC, January was filled with the Sun Peaks Extended Trip followed by the Kicking Horse bus trip and a movie night social. February included the Whitefish weekend trip with 29 CSC'ers; then the Castle Mountain bus trip last Saturday; and then 20 members and guests cheered on Canada at the Olympic Social the very next day! Whew! We've had great success with all of our Extended Trips and the last weekend trip of the season leaves March 5th to Jasper. There are just three spots available. CSC Learn to Loppet a Success!
In case you haven't
heard, the Club's Nordic program teamed up with the University of
Calgary Athletic Department & Campus Outdoor Centre to offer the
Learn To Loppet Program from October to March.
Alasdair Fergusson,
Club President, initiated this new venture for the Club
and Flora
Giesbrecht and Cindy Tester were Nordic Ski Instructors.
Twenty
participants joined to get fit and train for CSC's signature race,
the Lake Louise
Loppet this Sunday March 7th.
The first two months involved a variety
of weekly wellness and sport related seminars followed by a dryland
training session led by Fitness Instructors from the University of
Calgary. Fitness testing was done in the beginning and end of this period
to monitor flexibility, strength and endurance. The trainers did a
great job of getting everyone into shape before the ski season started
in December.
Once the snow arrived, the group hit the
slopes. Some participants had never cross-country skied before
while others have been skiing for years and joined to improve their
classic technique and challenge themselves to do a loppet.
The class
has been diligently meeting every Tuesday night at COP and Saturdays
for a day trip to various trails such as Canmore Nordic Centre, Lake
Louise, Cascade Fire Road, Pocaterra and Ribbon Creek.
Ready to test
their skills, four skiers from the class raced in the Golden
Huckleberry Loppet which was part of the day trip to Golden on January
31. Everyone finished the 11 km race and our group won three medals.
It has been a very rewarding experience to work with such a motivated
and fun group of adults and one high school student.
A special thanks goes
to Alasdair for all of his hard work in getting this program off the
ground and to our coaching staff, Gillian Savage-Knight, Duncan Kenyon, Mark Kudryk, Dave Bejzyk, and Ron Schramm for assisting with practices and day trips.
We are very
excited to have these new members join the Club this season and we wish
you all the best as you put your skills to use in CSC's Lake Louise Loppet this weekend!
