Summer Sips
Facebook IconOf the following options, do you know which beverage does the least harm to your teeth?

Dark Cola
Lemonade
Unsweetened Iced Tea
Gatorade

Did you select the Unsweetened Iced Tea? Even though teas can cause staining to teeth, the lack of sugar and acid in this drink makes it the best choice for preserving your tooth enamel.

Looking for a better option? Try green tea which is lighter in color and results in far less staining. If you prefer something sweet, xylitol is a natural sweetener that studies suggest help prevent tooth caries. You can find xylitol in Rochester at the Good Food Store Co-op. If you absolutely can't live without your beverage of choice, use a straw to help pass the sugars, stains and acids over your teeth.

Pick up a free sample of xylitol next time you stop by North Pointe Dental!
Water Fluoridation
Water Glass
The subject of public water fluoridation is not a new debate, but it is one that is gaining new attention recently.

When making a decision regarding consumption of fluoride it is important to know the facts. Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance in many water supplies. Natural groundwater in Rochester contains 0.3 ppm fluoride. In 1960, Olmsted County began adding fluoride to drinking water in order to achieve a level (0.7-1.2 ppm) that would promote oral health by preventing tooth decay. Last year fluoridation levels were tested and monitored by Rochester Public Utilities weekly at 25 different residential and business sites around the city. In 2009, RPU's tests indicated fluoride ranges from 1.1 to 1.3 ppm, with an average level of 1.2 ppm.

We recommend that our patients consume fluoridated water as part of their general oral care. If you have any questions, concerns, or special needs we are happy to address them with you.
