Director's Corner Celebrating Our Independence
Summertime is here in Smyth County and this year the heat is certainly letting us know that the season has arrived. Families are cooling off at the local pools, catching a wave in Saltville, and even dipping their toes in local streams or the cool mountain waters of Hungry Mother Lake. Summer barbecues are topped off with ice cold lemonade and crisp, juicy watermelon. The community is buzzing with live music, fairs, markets, and craft shows. Visitors abound and are greeted with true southern hospitality in our friendly community - a place where folks give a wave to every passerby. Summers in Smyth County are filled with activity, but also offer a time to kick back and relax. As we spend these hot summer nights swinging on the porch, watching the fireflies, we can reflect on some of the things that make our community so great. Smyth County is a place that is rich in history, tradition, and culture. From the Revolution, through the Civil War, and into the present our community has proud of who we are and where we have come from. We are known for our displays of patriotism, showing our true colors: Red, White, and Blue. And this Independence Day is certain to be no different. We can celebrate our country, our commonwealth, our community, and the opportunities that we have as citizens in this beautiful place we call home.

Pop Up Businesses Grant Program
Two of the hardest problems for entrepreneurs is finding that initial start-up cash, and having the training to complete a good business plan. Now, through an innovative project funded by the Virginia Main Street Program, the Town of Marion is offering to cover both for people interested in bringing their business to downtown. "We're partnering to show the world that Marion is open for business," said Ken Heath, the town's Economic and Community Development Director. Taking a nod from the trendy "pop up business" model, where celebrity chefs open unique restaurants and big name retailers open seasonal shops in vacant storefronts in major cities for a short time, Marion's downtown district is expanding the idea to bring in new businesses that they hope stick around and grow. In addition to the cash prize, the town is working with several business development agencies to offer an eight-week "boot camp", a class that is tailored to help entrepreneurs develop a business plan that they will then present to a panel for judging. The top three business plans will each receive up to $5,000 in cash to help offset rent and utilities for the first six months' operation, plus each will receive $1,000 in advertising time on a local radio station. Successful business plans for the contest must address at least one of the top business needs that were determined by a community survey, and winning businesses will be assigned a mentor to help with every aspect of startup to help them grow. "This is an innovative way to fill the storefronts with good, strong businesses," said Heath. "Our plan is for these three to be so successful that they will serve as a magnet for other new businesses to come discover all we have to offer here in Marion." For additional information on the project, dubbed "Pop Up Marion", contact Heath at (276) 783-4190 or via email at kheath@marionva.org.
