Greetings! |
We are in the midst of a special "Season of Welcome" at St. Philip's. Of course we strive to be a welcoming community at all times, but now is an especially important time to practice offering a warm welcome to all. First, look around you and smile at those sitting in nearby pews. Next, introduce yourself to them by telling them your name and saying "I don't believe we've met." Find out their name and something about them. Whether long-term parishioners, new St. Philippians, or guests, introducing ourselves to each other says "glad you're here!"If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |

"First Sunday Music" September 30
Special music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services resumes one week early. On Sunday, September 30, St. Philip's Adult Choirs and Canterbury Choir Apprentices, with orchestra, will present Mozart's Coronation Mass as part of the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. This Mass is filled with exciting, rhythmic passages in movements such as the Gloria. The hauntingly beautiful Agnus Dei gives us a taste of the famous aria "Dove Sono" from The Marriage of Figaro. This music will be sung throughout the worship as part of the liturgy, and we are excited to share this wonderful experience with you. Note: because the Kyrie movement will be used as the prelude, it is suggested that you arrive 10 minutes early. Full Slate of Forums September 30 J2A Pilgrimage: An Awakening and Deepening of Faith - East Gallery Hear St. Philip's J2A "graduates" share impressions of Pilgrimage 2012, a deeply bonding and spiritually significant event in their lives. Open House |
How Would You Feel If ...
... you were throwing a party and nobody came? We're throwing a party next Sunday, October 7. Help us fill the Church to overflowing with guests. Who will you invite: family, friends, neighbors, co-workers? Bring them all! Tell them about our Open House. People like being part of a big event. Extend your personal invitation, either printed or verbal, this week. Offer to meet them before the service and sit with them. Walk them to the Murphey Gallery Ministry Fair for fun and refreshments after worship. Remind them that Dr. Harry Caldwell will lead a fine art tour in the Church between the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services; show them the Music Center if they are interested in music. Let families know we have plenty of parking, activities for children and teens, and child care. Help us gather in guests as we fling open our doors and hearts for Open House. Thanks!

New Electronic Post
"Will and Lily's Mom, Annie Barrett," writes: You may hear the sound of little voices projecting glee and laughter through the halls of St. Philip's these days. Our children and families have much to be thankful for as we begin Worship With Us, Church School, and Comfy Space Services this year. As returning and new families make their way into the Children's Center, they will encounter the first phase of an incredible face-lift the space is undergoing. As one walks through the nursery, classrooms, and Children's Chapel, the transformation is palpable. The fresh smell of new carpet, paint, and flooring lingers. The newly organized space shows the dedication and intent of the children's ministry staff and laity. Read more.
Youth Newsletter
The October newsletter for youth has just hit the media -- you can find it on Facebook, and on the "Youth" page of St. Philip's web site.
Instructed Eucharist Resource Available
In September we presented an Instructed Eucharist at the 9 and the 11:15 a.m. services. It was a lot of information to absorb! We now have a publication that contains all of the material presented at those services. It's posted on St. Philip's web site under the "publications" link.

Garden Ministry Forming
We hope you have noticed the general spiffing up that has been done in the Perry Garden! Isn't it amazing how much colorful plants and greenery can add to our campus? We need your help! A green thumb is not required!! The Garden Ministry is forming and we need members. Our purpose is to keep our church gardens looking attractive and inviting. Contact Bev Edminster at 885-4266, Pam Henderson at 529-1747, or Geri Ashworth at 743-7059, or leave a message in Bev Edminster's box in the office.
Are You Social Media Savvy?
St. Philip's is organizing a Social Media Team, which will be tasked with implementing a social media strategy for St. Philip's. If you Like, Comment, Tweet, or Blog, and want to help, please e-mail a brief paragraph describing your social media talents and how you can contribute to this ministry, to Serena Hall. To see a team ministry description, click here.
Try Our Ministry of Ushering
If you are welcoming and friendly and work well on a team, please consider joining the St. Philip's usher corps. Ushers are assigned to an usher team that serves one Sunday a month at your preferred service. No experience necessary! You will be provided training by an usher leader or team captain before you begin. Typical duties consist of greeting parishoners and visitors, distributing service bulletins, passing the collection plates and guiding worshippers for communion. Helping to keep our services running so smoothly and to be on the frontline in greeting visitors is a very rewarding ministry. To volunteer or for more information, contact one of our usher leaders: Bill Kruse, 548-7426, Mark Woodhams, 529-0765, or Lisa Harris, 628-8661. Or simply speak to an usher at the back of the church as you leave.
ASMP Needs You!
Just 2 hours a week of your time can make a huge difference in the lives of the children in the After-School Music Program! Please consider volunteering during our fifth season. Opportunities range from providing homework help, snacks, and playtime to helping them practice their instruments to riding the van that gets the kids to the church. ANY help you can give would be much appreciated. Sign-up sheets are available at coffee hour, so please sign up and join the fun! You may call Nancy Atherton at 269-0699 for further information and to sign up.
Calling All Bell Ringers
Would you like to contribute to the musical traditions of St. Philip's? Help us keep St. Philip's handbell tradition strong, by supporting us with your talents. We always welcome new members. Contact Allyn Baker at Handbells@stphilipstucson.org for more information. We rehearse on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. and help lead worship on select Sundays and feast days.
Prayer Shawl Knitters Resume
St. Philip's Prayer Shawl Knitters will resume their Saturday morning sessions on Saturday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Renouf/Nelson Library. Open to anyone who likes to knit or wants to learn how. Invite your knitting friends!
Breakfast Update
Our Parish Breakfast Committee is working to organize for fall. Although we are pleased that our chef Phillip Koumal found a great job in his field in another city, that means we need to find a new chef. We also need volunteers to help run the program on Sunday mornings, and we especially need someone to spearhead this important welcoming ministry. If you are interested, or have ideas or questions, please contact Ana Nygren.
