Greetings!

welcome We are in the midst of a special "Season of Welcome" at St. Philip's. Of course we strive to be a welcoming community at all times, but now is an especially important time to practice offering a warm welcome to all. First, look around you and smile at those sitting in nearby pews. Next, introduce yourself to them by telling them your name and saying "I don't believe we've met." Find out their name and something about them. Whether long-term parishioners, new St. Philippians, or guests, introducing ourselves to each other says "glad you're here!"

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On

Homecoming Sunday
homecoming Who says "Homecoming" is just for college students? On Sunday, September 9, we draw on the great fall tradition of Homecoming -- to reconnect with each other and our traditions at a special fellowship time in the Murphey Gallery, beginning after the 7:45 service and lasting until time for the 11:15 service. Bring your stories from summer, along with your hopes and plans for fall. You are also invited to bring a potluck finger food to share. Pom-poms are optional.

Instructed Eucharists
Two Sunday services in September will feature Instructed Eucharists, which are Eucharist services that include commentary about why we do what we are doing in the liturgy. The first will be at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 9, and the next will be the following Sunday, September 16, at 11:15 a.m. This is a wonderful chance for all of us to learn something we may not have known about our own worship -- and it's a really great opportunity to invite a friend to attend church with you. On Sunday, September 23, at 10:15 a.m. in the East Gallery, our Rector will lead a forum on the instructed Eucharist. Come and learn!

Titan Valley Warheads
Friends of Music's popular summer concert series concludes on Sunday, September 9, at 2 p.m. in the Church with something completely different. The Titan Valley Warheads will celebrate their 30th anniversary with a mixture of bluegrass, western, western swing, and some great a cappella do-wop. Titan Valley is a five piece acoustic band that performs throughout Arizona and the southwest. Known for their tight harmonies and instrumental skills, they have been voted Best Bluegrass Band by the Tucson Area Music Awards, won the prestigious "Best Band" title at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and performed for appreciative crowds at festivals, concerts, and both private and corporate events. The band currently consists of Gary Kuitert (mandolin), Earl Edmonson (guitar), Ed Davenport (bass), Andy McCune (banjo), and Tom Rhodes (fiddle). Admission is by donation ($15 suggested).

Visit Our Parishioner Art Show
During September, the Murphey Gallery features a display of more than 40 impressive works of art by 21 artists, including water colors, acrylics, etchings, photographs, tapestry, rugs, pottery, and embroidery by St. Philip's parishioners. You are encouraged to admire and consider purchasing some of the art the art while enjoying a beverage and snack provided by one of our wonderful ministries on Sundays, or at any time that the gallery is open during the week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-4 p.m. and when not in use).

Make Plans Now for Open House
open house sign St. Philip's Ministry Fair -- "Open House, Open Doors, Open Hearts" -- will take place Sunday, October 7, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Now is the time to practice "invitational hospitality." Think about the people you know -- at work, school, children's play groups or other activities, neighbors, or even family members -- who might find meaning and joy in Christ's beloved community, specifically St. Philip's. Invite them to come with you on Sunday, October 7 (or sooner, but especially that date). Send them to the web site to begin learning about who we are and the ways we serve each other and the community around us.

Ministry groups: now is also the time to think about volunteer opportunities in your ministries that might appeal to someone new to St. Philip's or new to being active in ministry. Write up a simple "ministry role description" describing the opportunity, to have available at the fair. For more information contact Beth Brouillette.

St. Philippians' Summer Stories

St. Philip's has a new electronic publication -- "Good News from St. Philip's" -- your opportunity to tell your individual and collective stories about mission and ministry at St. Philip's.

Read the thoughts of a J2A leader, a J2A parent, and some J2A Pilgrims about Pilgrimage:
"To think, 18 months ago I filled out an interest sheet asking if I would be willing to help St. Philip's youth groups by cooking, washing dishes, etc. Fast forward and I'm on a plane with nine 15- to 16-year-olds winging my way to Europe for a 2-week pilgrimage."  read more

"My daughter, April, just returned from the J2A pilgrimage where she and her fellow pilgrims visited holy sites in England before crossing over to France to participate in worship activities at Taizé." read more

"This last year has been quite a journey for me as well as the J2A youth." read more

Read about a young chorister's summer RSCM course experience:

"For the past 3 years I have had the honor of attending the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Gulf Coast Course in Houston, Texas. I get to attend this 1-week camp thanks to the generosity of Friends of Music." read more

Read about the ministry of the Episcopal Federal Credit Union:
"In our fast-paced, high-tech world, we often fail to recognize that God is intricately involved in the details of our lives. One of these details is our financial life, our banking, our saving, our borrowing. What we do with our money, how we care for it, how we use it, how we make the most of it both for ourselves and for others is important to God and to our service to God." read more

Holy Land journey group Read sojourners' impressions about their interfaith journey to the Holy Land:
"In June, 21 travelers from Temple Emanu-El, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and St. Philip's, under the leadership of the Rev. John Kitagawa and Rabbi Samuel Cohon, embarked on a 10-day interfaith journey to the Holy Land. Here are some of their impressions." read more

After reading these stories, be sure to click on "home," then on the links below and also on "archive," to read all of the stories posted. If you scroll to the very bottom of the home page, you can click on "follow" to receive an email every time a new story is posted.

In an effort to continue to meet the needs of all our parishioners, we will periodically mail a printed "digest" form of this publication.

Thank you to all who contributed stories to this new publication. You are encouraged to submit your stories of mission and ministry (and photos!) to parishnews@stphilipstucson.org.
