Announcement from the Rector
|
I am very pleased to announce that Deacon Virginia "Vicki" Hesse has accepted my call to become the second Assistant to the Rector St. Philip's. She will begin her ministry on Tuesday, 4 September 2012.
I want to thank the excellent Search Committee for their diligent and thoughtful work. Sue Cross chaired the committee until travels with Tom took them far away. Doug Burke took over as chair. Sue Kuns, Doug Spurlin, and Bill Kruse rounded out this hard working group. Though candidates came during the summer when many were on vacation, a number of people were able to meet them. Those who responded to my request for feedback on the candidates gave Vicki very high marks, which affirmed my thoughts. I believe Vicki will work well with present staff, and will provide leadership in the areas of pastoral care and evangelism. Though new to the ordained ministry, she is spiritually grounded, has experience as a lay minister, and brings lots of transferable skills from her secular work.
Plans for Vicki's ordination to the priesthood are already underway with the Bishop's Office. Our hope is to have this take place at St. Philip's before Christmas.
I've asked Vicki to introduce herself briefly (see below).
Please join me in welcoming Vicki Hesse when she arrives in September. Thank you!
Faithfully,
John
The Rev. John E. Kitagawa, D.Min., Rector
I was born and raised in Southern California, in what might be called "church of the outdoor sports," including tree-climbing, swimming and horseback riding. After completing my B.S. Degree in Business Administration, my first career was in consulting, project management and computer training. As an adult, I joined and was baptized in the Episcopal Church. While earning my Master of Divinity at Iliff School of Theology (Denver, CO) in the Anglican Studies program, I met my life partner who is an ordained UCC Pastor in Campus Ministry. We found mutual interests in spirituality, justice, and nature, particularly mountain biking, running, and hiking. While we were living in Asheville, NC, I served as a chaplain at a nearby regional trauma care hospital. In 2009, I entered the discernment process with my sponsoring parish, All Souls Cathedral, and my sending diocese, Western North Carolina. In May, 2012, I completed a one-year Diploma in Anglican Studies at Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained in June. I am excited to join St. Philips In The Hills as an Assisting Clergy. I look forward to being with each of you and experiencing God's Love together.
--Virginia K. (Vicki) Hesse
