Ministry E-Letters

Greetings!

welcome August begins a special "Season of Welcome" at St. Philip's. Of course we strive to be a welcoming community at all times, but late summer -- when school is starting, Tucsonans are returning from vacations, and new residents are visiting churches -- is an especially important time to practice offering a warm welcome to all. First, look around you and smile at those sitting in nearby pews. Next, introduce yourself to them by telling them your name and saying "I don't believe we've met." Find out their name and something about them. Whether long-term parishioners, new St. Philippians, or guests, introducing ourselves to each other says "glad you're here!"

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Message from the Rector

Being the Welcoming Community

I did something a little unusual (for me) at the 11:15 a.m. service a couple of Sundays ago. I asked the congregation to look around and to smile. I asked them to introduce themselves to anyone they did not know -- "Hello, my name is John Kitagawa, I don't think I know you." (Of course, after the service, several witty people greeted me at the door -- "Hello, my name is John Kitagawa, I don't think I know you.")

I did this because I noticed a lot of unfamiliar faces at this service -- some couples, some individuals, and a number of families. We are definitely in "Church shopping" season. Back East, this does not happen until after Labor Day, but here with schools opening in early August, the rhythms of life are different.

We have great music, beautiful liturgies and thoughtful preaching. We have meaningful programs and many ways to serve. Ultimately, the decision to join, participate, and incorporate will depend on human relationships. Every one of us can make a difference in this regard. Smile and introduce yourself. I think the studies show that if a guest leaves knowing three names, there is a good possibility they will come back, at least for a second look. If you discover a guest's interest and you can help connect them to a parishioner or program, please do so. If there is an appropriate opening, share your experience of St. Philip's. Maybe you will meet a long-term parishioner ... on the other hand, perhaps a guest at St. Philip's will feel more welcome because you made the effort to connect with them.

Seeing and meeting families can be a critical factor for a church-shopping family. So, families with children and high schoolers, please be there on Sundays to be part of St. Philip's welcoming team.

Registration for our Children and Youth ministries is taking place this month. Forms are available at the 10:15 hour in both the Children's Center and the Teen Center -- there are activities for children each Sunday, and the youth spaces are available for you to hang out and get to know each other. Registration forms are also posted online.

For a number of years, the second Sunday of September has been our parish "Welcome Sunday," a time to greet each other and welcome new people to our community. However, we so enjoyed seeing old friends after the summer that prospective new members were a little intimidated. Thus, we decided this fall to split the event.

Homecoming Sunday, on Sunday, September 9, will feature gatherings in the Murphey Gallery between the 7:45 and 9 a.m. and the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. This "expanded coffee hour" will include coffee, chat, and potluck light snacks and a chance to enjoy reconnecting with friends.

We will have a Ministry Fair on Sunday, October 7, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., called "Open House, Open Doors, Open Hearts." This will give our ministries a little more time to prepare and all of us an opportunity to practice "invitational hospitality." Think about the people you know -- at work, school, children's play groups, or other activities, neighbors, or even family members -- who might find meaning and joy in Christ's beloved community, specifically St. Philip's. Invite them to come with you on Sunday, October 7 (or sooner, but especially that date). Send them to the web site to begin learning about who we are and the ways we serve each other and the community around us.

Please see more details in the weeks to come.

Let's get this new program year off to a great start! Thank you!

Faithfully,
John
The Rev. John E. Kitagawa, D.Min., Rector

Registration fee is $295 per person (includes the program and materials). Scholarship assistance available. For more information and to register, contact the Rev. Greg Foraker at 299-6421.

Comfy Space "Comfy Space" Worship for Wigglers
The first "Comfy Space" service of the 2012-2013 season will take place next Sunday, August 12, at 9:15 a.m. in the Children's Chapel. "Comfy Space" worship is designed to provide meaningful worship experiences for those who tend to wiggle in church, as well as those who worship with them. The theme is: Jesus said "I am the bread of life." Bruce Phillips will deliver the sermon and lead music, with assistance from younger St. Philippians. Worshippers of all ages are invited. "Comfy Space" services are at 9:15 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month.

Sunday Mornings for Children and Youth
At the 10:15 hour during August, activities are available for children in the Children's Center. The Teen Center will be open for youth to drop by and get acquainted with Youth Minister Sara Talley. It is time to register for fall activities. Forms are available at those venues and also on St. Philip's web site, under "latest news."

Interested in Forming a Playgroup?

We are hoping to form a coffee/playgroup for parents of young children and their little ones, and would like to know if any of you may be interested in participating in a weekday get-together. We're very open to your input. This could take place weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly -- whichever seems to be the best fit for our group. The idea is for those of us who have free time during the week to get together regularly with our children to enjoy coffee/tea, chatting, and playtime. Please let us know what you think! Karla Salvatore Caveness can be reached by e-mail or phone at 288-2616. We look forward to hearing from you!

The 20s/30s/40s Fellowship invites all St. Philippians in their 20s, 30s, or 40s to a Meet and Greet on Sunday, August 26, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz.  We look forward to catching up after the summer and hearing what everyone has been doing. We especially welcome those new to St. Philip's -- this is a great time to connect with others in your age group and hear about all the wonderful things happening in our group! For more information, or to be added to our mailing list, please contact Tamzin Sugiyama at 20s30s40s@stphilipstucson.org.

Friends of Music August Events
The popular Friends of Music summer series continues in August.

The Fain-Mantega Duo, consisting of Buenos Aires musicians Paulina Fain (flutes) and Exequiel Mantega (piano), will present a performance of traditional and nuevo tango music for flute/piano and flute duo on Thursday, August 16, at 7 p.m. in the Bloom Music Center. They will be accompanied by Tucson flutist Sandy Schwoebel, and local tango dancers. Tango music is a fusion of several music styles which were present in South America in the latter part of the 19th century. It is an expression of romance, of mood and emotion, of love gone wrong, of heartbreak and passion, of life and death. Today, people all around the world dance the tango. Admission is by donation, with $15 suggested.

A class on Musicality for Tango Dancers is being offered on Tuesday, August 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The fee for this class is $30 per person. For more information about the class or the concert, please call 490-1817.

french horn concert flier
On Sunday, August 19, join Daniel Katzen, horn, with Benjamin Nisbet, violin, and Elena Miraztchiyska, piano, presenting a collection of short pieces for violin, horn, and/or piano, featuring the greatest chamber piece for this instrumentation by Johannes Brahms, the Horn Trio op. 40. This concert will be at 2 p.m. in the Church. Admission is by donation ($15 suggested).

The entire summer concert series schedule can be found on the Friends of Music page of St. Philip's web site.

Food for Thought

General Convention Matters
In July, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church convened its 77th triennial meeting in Indianapolis. Our Rector served as a clergy deputy from the Diocese of Arizona.

Much has been said about Convention. The following summary, from Arizona's five deputies, is posted on the Diocesan web site.

This summary, titled "The ABCCCs of General Convention," was written by the Rev. John Ohmer.

After Convention, articles appeared in many publications, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Our Rector posted his responses to these articles on Facebook. They are also posted on the "latest news" page of our web site, and you may access them here (response to New York Times) (response to Wall Street Journal).

A forum about General Convention will be presented on Sunday, October 14, at 10:15 a.m. in the East Gallery. The Rev. John Kitagawa will give his impressions of Convention and field your questions.
