Blake Hutson

Celebrating the Hutsons' Ministry

The Rev. Blake Hutson has been called to be Rector of Church of the Holy Apostles in Birmingham, Alabama. Although this is a wonderful opportunity for Blake, we at St. Philip's will miss his enthusiastic, diligent, and sensitive ministry.

When asked to share a bit about his new call, Blake said: "Church of the Holy Apostles is located in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. The parish was founded in 1994 and I will be their second rector. They are a vibrant and enthusiastic parish, they want to grow and I think have a very bright future ahead. Christina and I are very excited about this opportunity. We are thankful and humbled to have had the opportunity to serve our St. Philip's family, friends and colleagues. We love the parishioners of St. Philip's and are truly grateful to have been a part of your lives over the last five years."

Blake and Christina's last Sunday with us will be this Sunday, May 13. Blake will preach at all morning services. Blake and Christina will be honored at reception at 10:15 a.m., in the Children's Center Courtyard. There will be cake, tributes to his ministry, and a purse of gratitude from the Parish. If you would like to make a contribution, please send it to St. Philip's, attention Bonnie Flint, or drop it off in the office. Your check should be made out to St. Philip's In The Hills with a note in the memo line: Blake Hutson. This is not a tax deductible donation. A book of letters is also being collected. If you would like to add yours, please prepare it on 8.5 x 11 paper and mail it UNFOLDED to St. Philip's, P.O. Box 65840, Tucson, 85728-5840, attn. Stella Lopez (or you may place it in Stella's box in the office).

the ascension

Services / Celebrations
St. Philip's will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the Church. Ascension Day is one of the earliest Christian festivals. During the 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus met several times with his disciples to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as he ascended to heaven. Incense will be used at the Ascension Day service.

Afterwards, Parish Life Ministry will host a festive reception in the Perry Garden.

Pentecost artThe Day of Pentecost is Sunday, May 27. Pentecost, or "50th day," is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. On that day, it is said that there was a sound like that of a rushing wind and tongues of fire descended and rested over the heads of Jesus' disciples. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit empowered them to proclaim the Gospel of the risen Christ, and by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native tongues of the people present. We wear red on Pentecost to recall the tongues of flame of the first Pentecost. This day is one of the days appointed for Baptism, which we will celebrate at the 9 a.m. service (the alternative term "Whitsunday" comes from the white robes which newly baptized catechumens would wear on that day).

At 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, you are invited to a birthday party to celebrate everyone's birthday. The Parish Life Minsitry is providing birthday cakes for each birth month! You are encouraged to celebrate with us and perhaps find someone who shares your birthday! Don't forget to wear red!

Message from the Rector

Diocese of Maryland banner

In the wake of the tragedy that occurred last week, I am asking all St. Philippians to pray for the repose of the souls of Brenda Brewington, Administrative Assistant, and the Rev. Mary Marguerite Kohn, Co-Rector, St. Peter's, Ellicott City, Maryland, and Douglas Jones, who shot and killed them. In addition, please pray for my friend, the Rev. Kirk Kubicek, surviving co-rector, and the people of St. Peter's. During my time on the staff of the Bishop of Maryland, I celebrated, preached, and worked with the vestry of the parish on numerous occasions. My heart is broken. In my old job, I probably would have gone to St. Peter's to be in solidarity with them. At this distance, I can only be with them in spirit.

For more information please read this resolution.

Faithfully yours,
John

Community Losses

The Tucson Community and St. Philip's are saddened by the loss of Zada Edgar-Soto in a tragic accident last week. Zada was a parishioner at St. Philip's, a former Church School teacher, and the mother of a couple of our past youth. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m. Details of the service are pending.

We are also saddened to report that parishioner Sherry Sedgwick passed away yesterday. Other details are not available at this time. Sherry was active in Outreach ministries. Information about services for Sherry will be published as soon as plans have been made.

May the souls of all of the departed repose in peace, for they rest from their labors.
