Deacon Dan Behling Legacy
|

Deacon Dan Behling's most enduring legacy takes the form of lives he touched through his ministries, especially in the lives he helped to save through Twelve Step programs. Dan was constantly bringing people to St. Philip's to deepen their relationship with the "higher power" and to be in community with us.
Dan was very generous to the parish through his legacy planning. Dan directed that the proceeds from some of his investments and from the sale of his house should be given to the parish. The house was recently sold, so funds are flowing to St. Philip's. Furthermore, our youth groups had great success at the Fall Trunk Sale thanks to Dan leaving the contents of his house for this purpose. Our library received the bulk of Dan's library, filling in some gaps in theology and psychology, and benefiting the book sale.
In life, Deacon Dan made a vital difference in individual lives and had a positive impact on St. Philip's community. Thanks to his planning, Dan leaves a lasting mark that will continue to touch and transform lives at and through St. Philip's Parish.
Faithfully yours,
John The Rev. John E. Kitagawa, D.Min., Rector.

What's Going On |
Got Brick/s?
Work has started on St. Philip's memorial Labyrinth, an octagonal Amiens-style meditation labyrinth to be installed in the Plaza. Its construction is being funded by sales of engraved pavers. You are invited to purchase bricks in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a special event. Our initial order for engraved bricks will be submitted on Monday, March 19, so please place your order ASAP! Stop at the table in the Perry Garden, or visit the Little Shop, where cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted. Order forms, available symbols, and sample phrases are posted on St. Philip's web site under the 75th Anniversary tab. Donations for bricks are 100% tax deductible.
In addition, the Labyrinth Committee is supporting the Diocese of Arizona's participation in the "Bricks for Haiti" appeal. Just over two years ago, much of southern Haiti was damaged in a terrible earthquake. Over 300,000 people died, and the infrastructure was shattered. Among the buildings destroyed was the Holy Trinity Cathedral complex in Port-au-Prince, which served not only the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, but the whole region, as a cultural center and school. During Lent, $10 of the cost of each labyrinth brick sold will be donated to the "Rebuild our Church in Haiti" fund. Read more about this appeal.

Bloom Memorial Concert
On Friday, March 16, pianist Paula Fan, soprano Nancy Davis Booth, and pianist Jeff Haskell -- all former students of John Bloom -- will present an evening of music and reminiscences celebrating the visionary teacher and conductor whose genius left an indelible mark on St. Philip's and the surrounding community. John Bloom was a musician of many facets and shaped many musical lives. There should be something for everyone in this loving musical remembrance. At 7 p.m. in the Bloom Music Center. Admission by donation ($15 suggested).
Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair St. Philip's will hold our third Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair on Sunday, March 18, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in the Murphey Gallery. This fair will bring a full range of resources and experts to address a variety of issues regarding elder care. The information is geared not just for elders, but also for those who care for or about them, and even for those who expect to be an elder someday.
We have an impressive slate of exhibitors for the 2012 Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair - a wide range of Tucson's senior and caregiver resources from health care to home care, assisted living to Alzheimer's, fitness to financial planning, long-term care to legal care and more! The fair features informational booths for agencies and organizations who take pride in providing excellent services to our caregiver and senior community, all in one venue. A list of exhibitors is posted on the "Latest News" page of St. Philip's web site.
The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy encourages attendees to bring their prescriptions (brown bag suggested) for review for possible side effects and adverse interactions. Rural Metro Fire Engine 90 and crew will provide blood pressure checks. Private memory screening is being offered by Innovative Senior Care Home Health Agency. Participants are encouraged to pre-schedule by calling 250-8241.
Meet with representatives and experts from many agencies; view exhibits; obtain brochures and handouts; get free health screenings, housing information, giveaways, and door prizes; enjoy "oldies" performed by the Skyline Flutes flute quartet; and have your questions answered in a relaxed, informal setting. Join us for an information-packed day!

Reflections on Our Weekend with Sara Miles Thank you to our Outreach Commission for making it possible for St. Philip's to welcome Sara Miles the first weekend of Lent. We have heard from many parishioners who were very inspired by Sara's talks and preaching. During her time with us, Sara invited each of us into deep reflection about our faith and how each of us is called to respond the needs of a hurting world. Her message spoke to the heart of what it means to join in ministry. Sara spoke to the deeper inspiration and motivation of this vital part of our Christian mission. Sara's talks and sharing have tilled the soil, opening many hearts to listen for how God is calling each of us to new places in faith and service, especially fitting as we journey through Lent. The days and weeks ahead hold promise for continuing to open conversations with our members as we each discern our response to God. We each might consider remembering the people who we don't usually imagine as active in a ministry that inspires us, especially people who attended Sara's workshop or heard her preach, and invite them to join you in a ministry that stirs your faith and passion. The generous support of Outreach Commission "Yes to the Future" funds made this meaningful weekend possible. We thank them for their support.
Solar Update
Thanks to a generous donation from a St. Philip's parishioner who asked to remain anonymous, the installation of our solar energy panels is well underway. The contractor, TFS (Technicians for Sustainability) recently installed the solar panels on top of the steel framework in the east parking lot and have moved the energy inverter equipment into place. Landscaping has been installed in the curbed areas in the parking lot. The next steps are to finish work on the solar panel and equipment installation, re-installation of two lamp posts salvaged from the old parking lot area and initial testing of the equipment after the electrician does final wiring. The final steps of the project will occur in mid to late March with resurfacing and striping of the east parking lot and the final connection of the solar power system to the existing electrical transformer by TEP. The solar panels will then be ready to begin generating power the end of March or early April.
A dedication ceremony for the new solar energy system is planned for Sunday, April 22 (Earth Day) after the conclusion of the 11:15 a.m. worship service. Please mark the date in your calendar and watch for updates about the dedication.
