Dia de los Muertos at St. Philip's
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an event celebrated in many Latin American countries, particularly in Mexico. The Day of the Dead is a time to remember and honor the deceased and is usually characterized by ofrendas, which are shrines or altars constructed to present offerings to the spirits. Since Dia de los Muertos is considered to be a celebration of eternal life rather than a sad event, ofrendas usually reflect whimsical portrayals of the dead as they were when they were living.
St. Philip's In The Hills invites you to remember your departed loved ones by contributing to an ofrenda, which will be set up in the Columbarium Garden at St. Philip's through November 2. Photographs, meaningful objects, memorabilia, and (pre-approved) candles are all suitable offerings. You may place your items directly on the ofrenda or bring them to Stella Lopez in the church office.
The ofrenda will be used in conjunction with St. Philip's All Souls' Day memorial service. On Wednesday, November 2, we will celebrate All Souls' Day with a special Memorial Eucharist at 7:00 p.m. Particular attention will be given to remembering those who have died within the past two years, but we will celebrate all of our loved ones enjoying eternal life in the nearer presence of God. We invite families to remember their loved ones by lighting one of the votive candles found outside the church door prior to the service and placing it on the altar. Our special guest preacher will be the Rev. Megan Traquair. The service concludes with a procession into the Columbarium Garden for candle lighting and prayers. Afterwards, the celebration of life continues with a festive reception hosted by the Parish Life Ministry.
Family Fun Night Friday!
St. Philip's 75th Anniversary Committee, Children Youth & Family Ministries, and the Parish Life Ministry invite you to Family Fun Night on Friday, October 28, at 5:30 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. The evening features a delicious BBQ dinner and "Zorro" entertainment for the whole family. You are encouraged to wear Halloween, including Zorro, attire -- awards will be given for the best costumes. Please bring a salad or side dish and/or a can of food for the Food Pantry. Bring your pet to be blessed at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, as we celebrate the loving relationship shared by humans and their pets. This observance was begun 35 years ago and continues to be one of the most popular events of the church year. Readings and prayers focus on the wonders of our world and our responsibility as humans to be good stewards of God's creation. All types of animals are welcome at this service. (This service does not include communion. The usual Rite II Eucharist will take place in the Church, also at 9 a.m.)
The St. Francis Guild, St. Philip's animal ministry, collects animal food donations the last Sunday of each month, which are given to Hope Animal Shelter. You are invited to bring cat or dog food (cans or dry kibble) to donate. For more information contact animalministry@stphilipstucson.org.
Renouf/Nelson Library Offers King James Bible Anniversary Display Worldwide celebrations are planned in observance of the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible, which was first printed in 1611. St. Philip's will mark the anniversary of "The Book That Changed the World" during services on Reformation Sunday, October 30. The King James Version of the Bible will be used for the day's Lectionary readings. The Renouf/Nelson Library will have on display a variety of different Bible translations reflecting the same readings. You are invited to examine these volumes for an eye-opening view of the sometimes startling differences among the translations. The library will be open to visitors from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Prior to the reign of King James I, English translations of the Bible were suppressed and the punishment for attempting such translations was severe. James I did away with these penalties and commissioned a new translation based on the best sources and scholarship, free from biased commentaries, and conforming to the Theology of the Church of England. In 1604 six companies of scholars took on the task; the result of their labors was printed in 1611 and was dedicated to King James. Four hundred years later the King James Bible is still the most widely published text in the English language. (Source: The King James Bible Trust).
Vestry Forum on Family Financial Stewardship On Sunday, October 30, the Vestry Forum, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, will focus on family financial stewardship. Join Bill Lucas, Chair of our parish's Planned Giving Committee, for this forum to understand the importance of stewardship and our Christian life. The goals for this forum are to help families understand the importance of family financial planning and stewardship; understand the importance of creating and updating wills and health documents; consider giving as an essential part of family financial planning; consider including St. Philip's in their legacy planning; learn about the current financial position of the parish. All groups are invited, from single "twenty-somethings" to seasoned singles, and couples of all ages.  |

Get Your Tickets for Cabaret!
Cabaret, the ever-popular Friends of Music fundraising event, titled Anything Goes!, returns on Friday, November 4, for its 14th year. Presented by the adult choirs at St. Philip's, the show features solos and ensemble numbers by St. Philip's talented vocalists, many of whom are well known professionals in the Tucson community, with the piano stylings of Mary Baker, Bonnie Bird, and Jeffrey Campbell. The music is taken from the pop and Broadway genres, and allows choir members to "let down their hair" and show the facets of their personalities that are not normally seen on Sunday mornings. This year the choirs and Friends of Music celebrate St. Philip's 75th anniversary with a visit from Bill Roberts, former music director and founder of this Cabaret fundraiser. The evening should be magical!
Note that this year tickets are needed for Cabaret: $25 for regular seats, $30 for premium seats, and $55 for two premium seats. Tickets may be reserved by calling 577-5105 or emailing cabaret.st.philips@gmail.com.
The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. with an outdoor "spread" of hors d'oeuvres and libations. The show begins at 7:00 in the Bloom Music Center. Come early so you don't miss any of the fun!
You Asked For It -- Tailgate Rummage Sale St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church's Tailgate Rummage Sale returns by popular demand! A Tailgate Rummage Sale is a one-day sale event for those who would like to get rid of some unwanted items but don't want to go to the trouble of having their own garage sale. This sale, on Saturday, November 5, beginning at 7:30 a.m., is the third such sale at St. Philip's. How it works: Pack up your vehicle with your unwanted items, priced as you choose, and come to St. Philip's north parking lot at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the sale. You'll hold your own tailgate sale: you will be in charge of sales out of your own vehicle, taking in your profits. When you are done, you pack up or donate your stuff (there will be donation boxes available). The fee is $25 per vehicle for your space and will be paid to the committee on the day of the sale. That is the only cost to you. Be sure to invite your friends and neighbors to participate, and to come and shop! No advance arrangements need to be made -- just show up, sell, and shop! Renouf/Nelson Library Used Book Sale Book lovers, the long wait is over! The Renouf/Nelson Library will host its popular annual Used Book Sale on Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. There's something for everyone: offerings include a wide variety of fiction, history, biography, cooking, travel, philosophy, religion, children's books, art and science, as well as recent best-sellers. Prices are not marked, but a free-will offering is requested. Proceeds from the sale are used to purchase new books and supplies for the St. Philip's Library.
First Sunday Music November 6
St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church presents special music the first Sunday of each month. On Sunday, November 6, St. Philip's adult choirs will perform South African Mass by William Bradley Roberts as part of the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Accompaniment will be provided by St. Philip's Chamber Orchestra, made up of Tucson's finest instrumentalists, including an expanded percussion section. In celebration of St. Philip's 75th Anniversary, Bill Roberts, who served as Music Director at St. Philip's from 1993 to 2002, is returning to conduct his own works. In addition to the Mass, the choirs will present Bill's arrangements of the spirituals Didn' Mah Lord Delivuh Daniel, Down to the River to Pray, and This Little Light of Mine, plus the anthem Pie Jesu, commissioned especially for this service. The South African Mass is based on tunes collected while the composer was traveling in Africa in 2004 and 2006.
Friends of Music will host a reception for Bill between services in the Music Center. You're invited to stop by and say hello!
"My Soul, Rejoice!" Retreat Day Border and Immigration Ministries has organized a special day of renewal, entitled "My Soul, Rejoice!", on Saturday, November 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Redemptorist Renewal Center at Picture Rocks. This retreat is designed to restore physical, emotional, and spiritual energy which can be lost amid the challenges of being an active volunteer in social justice issues. The schedule includes fellowship, reflection, large- and small-group discussion, activities, and skill-building with peers. The retreat leader will be Jeanette Renouf, Ph.D., D.Min., founder and teacher in The Tacheria Interfaith School of Spiritual Direction and Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction. The venue, Redemptorist Renewal Center, is one of the most beautiful meeting facilities in Southern Arizona. There will be time to enjoy the desert surroundings, walk the labyrinth, or relax poolside. Designed to restore joy and energy, a sense of the blessings of life and lay ministry--to renew, relax, and recharge! Registration fee is $45, which includes lunch and materials (limited to 30 participants).  11th Annual End of Life Conference
Casa de la Luz Foundation invites you to "Listen, Learn, Live: Stories of Life, Mysteries of Death." The day includes workshops on after-death communication, the role of writing in the grieving process, the emotional, relational and spiritual aspects of grief, and more. Featured keynote speaker is Rachel Naomi Remen, author of "My Grandfather's Blessings," and a master storyteller and observer of life. Friday, November 11, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., here at St. Philip's. Called to be Whole and Holy Event A day of empowerment for equipping leaders, fostering enthusiasm, and identifying and removing barriers to full participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the life of the church will be held on Saturday, November 12, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., at the Disability Empowerment Center in Phoenix. Topics will include the theology of inclusion, "people-first language," best practices for inclusion in Church School and in worship, removing programmatic barriers, autism spectrum disorders, and assistive technology. Potpourri Concert Benefits TIHAN On Sunday, November 13, at 3 p.m., Lutheran Church of the Foothills presents the 14th annual Musical Potpourri Concert to benefit Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network. Stewardship Annual Response Campaign
"Faith in Challenging Times: Embracing Our Spiritual Center to Help Us Serve the World's Needs." The first four word simply recognize the realities of the difficult times in all our lives. The second part reminds us that strength, power and hope are found by centering oneself in our faith in Jesus Christ. The third part calls us to service rather than self-centeredness.
Stewardship packets were mailed last week. If you have not yet returned your estimate of giving, we ask that you read the enclosed materials and consider them thoughtfully. In addition, the Stewardship Committee is working very hard to invite every St. Philippian into a face to face conversation about the ways the community's life and ministry touch and change our lives, and how we can have a positive and meaningful impact on the community, both parishioners and neighbors. If you are contacted by a Parish leader, we hope you will accept the invitation.

Stewardship Witness When I first moved to Tucson, I was told that St. Philip's had the two primary qualities that I was looking for in a church: great music and an active Outreach program. So I came to a service here - and haven't left since. Like many of you, I spend a lot of time at St. Philip's, between singing, outreach, the After School Music Program, and the other wonderful and interesting activities in this vibrant parish. But while I know that my volunteer activities are important, the parish can't survive on volunteer help alone - we have a wonderful staff and an amazing facility to support monetarily to ensure we continue to do God's work in our community, both inside AND outside the parish. A small increase from each one of us would mean a huge increase in St. Philip's ability to reach out even more. Meet The Rev. N. Jean Rogers
St. Philip's is pleased to welcome the Rev. N. Jean Rogers as the newest member of our Affiliated Clergy, who volunteer their time to help out liturgically and provide pastoral care at St. Philip's. Jean has already assisted and celebrated at the 11:15 service on a couple of Sundays in October. A native Arizonian, Jean grew up in Phoenix. After earning a BA and MA at Arizona State University, Jean worked 20 years as a teacher, and a high school and central office administrator in the public school systems in Arizona, Alaska and Virginia. While living in Virginia, Jean answered her call to the priesthood. Jean received her Masters in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and in 1991 was ordained to the diaconate at the National Cathedral and to the priesthood at St. Patrick's, Georgetown. After her ordination, Jean worked as Assistant to the Rector at St. Patrick's and as the Chaplain at Beuvoir Elementary School on the National Cathedral Close. Jean's background in Native American ministry led her to northern Nevada where she served as the vicar to two churches on the Paiute Indian Reservation. In 1994, Jean received a call to serve as the rector of St. Andrew's, Nogales. During her tenure at St. Andrew's, the St. Andrew's Preschool & Day Care Center was started and is still successfully operating. Jean retired in 2003 after serving St. Andrew's for nine years. Since her retirement, Jean served as the interim rector at St. Francis, Green Valley, in 2007-08, and has been a diocesan supply priest. John, Jean's husband, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a retired energy conservation engineer. Before retiring, John worked for the Veteran's Administration and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Jean and John live on a ridge overlooking Tubac with their two dogs, a burro and a horse. They have four children and six grandchildren.
St. Philip's Outreach Ministries Recognized by Diocese
On Saturday, October 15, St Philip's was one of four parishes to receive a certificate from Episcopal Community Services recognizing our outstanding outreach ministries. We were recognized in particular for our support of Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, Interfaith Community Services, Border Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, and Primavera. These are some of the many partnerships that we have formed with other organizations in southern Arizona.
PCIC Meetings with Mayoral and City Council Candidates All nine candidates running for Tucson Mayor and for City Council accepted the invitation to meet with Pima County Interfaith Council (PCIC) leaders and community members at St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Parish on Saturday and Sunday, September 24 and 25. Nine separate sessions were held during the weekend, with over 130 in attendance. For fairness, candidates were asked the same exact questions, all related to the economic issues that have impacted the Tucson families. Through stories heard from the community, PCIC leaders clearly spelled out that unemployment, lack of job training, uneven education, lack of healthcare insurance, home foreclosures, etc., have resulted in about 200,000 Pima County residents (one in five) having an income below the federal poverty level.
Aware that the city can help in certain areas, while in other areas it has no direct responsibility, the moderators asked the candidates very specific questions with respect to programs and services that the city directly funds or had funded prior to the budget cuts. For issues not the direct responsibility of the city, candidates were asked if they were willing, if elected, to take a leadership role to bring together business leaders, government agencies, clergy and other city leaders to work on initiatives that would lift the Tucson economy. The meeting format made it possible to receive clear answers from each of the candidates and allowed those in attendance to differentiate among them. Each encounter was concluded by a reciprocal commitment: by the candidate to meet and work with PCIC, if elected; by those present to get the people in their communities to vote. Soup Kitchen Saves with Solar
One of St. Philip's Outreach ministries is to make lunches one Saturday a month for Casa Maria's free kitchen. Casa Maria has just announced the completion of its rooftop solar power system. The 3.87 kW solar electric (photovoltaic) system was paid for by a grant from Technicians for Sustainability, an incentive from Tucson Electric Power, and private donations. Producing over $70 worth of electricity each month, the solar array will allow Casa Maria to use a greater proportion of its budget to go toward feeding those in need, their primary mission. Located on an old adobe home at 352 E 25th St, the 18-panel solar array is a visual reminder of how solar is spreading in southern Arizona, even to places as unlikely as a soup kitchen. The newly solar powered soup kitchen subsists entirely off of private donations, and manages to feed hundreds of hungry Tucsonans daily. Casa Maria's free kitchen daily serves lunch to 600 single persons, many of whom are homeless, as well as providing several other services to persons in need.
