Greetings! |
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |

House of Bishops Pastoral Teaching At its recent meeting in Quito, Ecuador, the House of Bishops issued a pastoral teaching on the environment. Since this is an official document, the canons require that it be made available to the congregation. According to our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, "I think you will find it a thoughtful response and well worth our study. At the very least, I would hope that our congregations would know that we as a church do have something to say about this crisis."
The letter begins: "We, your bishops, believe these words of Jeremiah describe these times and call us to repentance as we face the unfolding environmental crisis of the earth: How long will the land mourn, and the grass of every field wither? For the wickedness of those who live in it the animals and the birds are swept away, and because people said, "He is blind to our ways." (Jeremiah 12:4) Continue reading.
May God give us the grace to heed the warnings of Jeremiah and to accept the gracious invitation of the incarnate Word to live ... a life of grace for the whole world."
Considering its length and "stewardship of creation" slant, you are encouraged to read this document electronically. A limited number of copies are available in the sermon rack in the office.
Stewardship Annual Response Campaign Sunday, October 2, was the opening Sunday of our Stewardship Annual Response campaign. "Faith in Challenging Times: Embracing Our Spiritual Center to Help Us Serve the World's Needs." The first four word simply recognize the realities of the difficult times in all our lives. The second part reminds us that strength, power and hope are found by centering oneself in our faith in Jesus Christ. The third part calls us to service rather than self-centeredness.
Stewardship packets will be available next Sunday. We ask that you pick yours up, read the enclosed materials, and consider them thoughtfully. In addition, the Stewardship Committee is working very hard to invite every St. Philippian into a face to face conversation about the ways the community's life and ministry touch and change our lives, and how we can have a positive and meaningful impact on the community, both parishioners and neighbors. If you are contacted by a Parish leader, we hope you will accept the invitation.
Stewardship Witness Had a good life from God? Hasn't God helped you through the challenges? Didn't God give you everything -- time, talent, AND treasure? Give some back to God -- especially treasure, right now.
But wait ... Financial times hard? Scared to commit? Take a risk ... that God will once again help you through the financial challenges. After all, God takes a risk with you every day. --Bill Cutlip, Vestry Member News from the Search Committee for Director of Music The Search Committee for Director of Music Ministry is underway. The committee is currently preparing job descriptions, developing selection criteria, placing announcements, and soliciting applications. Application materials will be posted on St. Philip's web site. Finalists will visit early next year. The new music director will arrive next summer.
The committee invites and welcomes your input. Please feel free to contact any committee member. Members are: Mary Lonsdale Baker, Barbara Cone, Bob Couch, John Evans, James Humphreys, Dianne Iauco, Kate Metcalf, Anne Parker, Wendy Peters, and Gwen Powell, Chair. You may contact us at search.committee@stphilipstucson.org. |

Study Acts, Psalms Two new Bible study series at St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church are beginning in October.
On Tuesdays, beginning October 11 and continuing, Senior Warden Richard Kuns leads a study of Luke's book of Acts, called by some "The Mission." Jesus's story did not end with Jesus! Eleven confused and scared disciples gathered in the same room where they had shared their final meal with Jesus and made a commitment. They were not merely spectators; they were in on the action of God. Thus begins a spectacular journey from Jerusalem to the heart of the Roman Empire, Rome. The group convenes at 10:45 a.m. in Room 10.
A six-week study of the Psalms begins on Sunday, October 16, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. "The Psalms: Living Reflections" invites you on a journey through the ancient Hebrew songs that shout out to God. The Psalms express joy and sorrow, peace and war, justice and vengeance, exuberance and depression, contentment and terror, safety and fear. Using Pamela Greenberg's The Complete Psalms: the Book of Prayer Song in a New Translation as a guiding text, Senior Warden Richard Kuns explores the structure and overall content of the Psalms with emphasis on selected spiritual pieces dealing with the issues of living as God's people in an unfriendly world. The text is available for purchase in St. Philip's Little Shop. Participants are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch.

Walking the Mourner's Path The Pastoral Care Ministry of St. Philip's In The Hills invites you to attend Walking the Mourner's Path®, a Christ-centered grief support program. The purpose of this eight week series is to transform grief into joyful living by offering the outstretched hand of Christ during bereavement. We invite those who have suffered the loss of a loved one to participate in our fall series, which meets on Tuesdays beginning October 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 6. Walking the Mourner's Path is a group support system made up of persons who share the pain of loss. It is not group therapy but is spiritually directed. In the eight week program, mourners learn ways in which they may honor their loved ones, seek spiritual direction, and discover Jesus' promise of comfort. Participants share their experiences and how God has entered their lives and is healing their pain. They learn that they are not alone on their Mourner's Path. This program is offered for $75.00 (the cost of materials). Registration is required. Please call the Church Office at 299-6421 or Sally Taylor at 229-9170 or mournerspath@stphilipstucson.org to register or for more information.
