Greetings! |
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
What's Going On |
Help Put Together Migrant Survival Packs Sunday
For the past several weeks, St. Philip's Outreach Commission has been collecting items for migrant survival pacs to help support Humanitarian Border Solutions, an organization devoted to providing humanitarian aid to migrants. Now we need your help this Sunday, July 31, to take the donated items and put them together into migrant survival packs. We will have tables set up in the Gallery between 10 and 11:30 a.m. to do this, and members of Outreach will be available to give instructions as well as work alongside you. It goes very fast, is lots of fun, and refreshments will be available to keep your strength up! Also, additional donations of items (water in particular) are still welcome on Sunday morning before 10 a.m. Thanks and see you there! Summer Lecture Series Begins Sunday Each summer the University of Arizona Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies joins St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church to present a summer lecture series. This year's series will place the timely theme of immigration within a historical setting. Entitled "Flight into Strange Lands: Religious Migration in the Early Modern World," the lectures will take up prominent examples of expulsion or voluntary emigration out of religious motives-the desire to retain the faith of a group's ancestors or to find an environment within which to practice "true religion." Oberman Professor Ute Lotz-Heumann and three Division doctoral students will take turns speaking on: the expulsion of the Jews from Aragon and Castile in 1492 (Sean Clark); the effort of a group of Anabaptists to establish a godly community under the protection of a nobleman in Moravia (Amy Newhouse); the so-called Pilgrims' journey to Plymouth in the New World (Mary Kovel); and the dispersion of the Huguenots (French Calvinists) after King Louis XIV's revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Each lecture will portray the bravery exhibited by women and men who were committed to their nonconformist beliefs.
Sunday, July 31--"The Other 1492: Ferdinand, Isabella, and the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain" with Sean Clark, Ph.D. student
Sunday, August 7 --"From Sedition to the Promised Land: Anabaptists in Moravia" with Amy Newhouse, Ph.D. student
Sunday, August 14--"Strangers in a Strange Land: The Voyage of the Mayflower Pilgrims" with Mary Kovel, Ph.D. student
Sunday, August 21--"A New Life? Huguenot Communities in Europe and North America after 1685" with Ute Lotz-Heumann, Heiko A. Oberman Professor of Late Medieval and Reformation History "Christmas in July" Sale Ends Sunday

Friends of Music Summer Concert: Rodriguez and Keepe Duo Friends of Music's popular summer concert series continues on Sunday, July 31, with the classical piano and saxophone duo of Allen Rodriguez and Michael Keepe. They will explore the many musical colors of this unique combination of sounds through original compositions and transcriptions of timeless favorites: works by Bach, Granados, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, Weidoeft, and more. The concert includes their arrangement of Bach's and Gounod's Ave Maria, which is part of "Can We Get Together," a benefit album that supports the victims of the January 8th shooting. At 2 p.m. in the Church. Admission by donation ($15 suggested).
Summer concerts continue in August and September! August 21 brings "Reeds and Roulades" with Elena Todd, John Snavely, and Marie Sierra. On August 28, join Zephyrus Trio and Friends (Cindy Behmer, Kevin Justus, Cassandra Bendickson, Gregory Helseth, Philip Hemmo, and Michael Dauphinais) for "Winds, Keys, and Cords." On September 18, bid a "Mozartean Farewell to Summer" with the Bella Carita Chamber Ensemble. All are at 2 p.m. in the Church. |

On the Horizon |
Comfy Space Services Resume Our Comfy Space services, aimed at families and friends of God who are prone to "wiggle" a bit in church, will begin a new season on Sunday morning, August 14 at 9 a.m. in the Children's Chapel. This month's worship service will be around the theme of "Dreaming Big." We'll address the questions: How do our dreams help us to hear and do God's will? What might God help us dream and do with this special service time?
Young at heart of all ages are invited to come, share in the interactive reflection time around that theme, enjoy the fellowship and Holy Communion, and serve God as a community in Christ. It's a relaxed, playful atmosphere, safe and inspiring. So, shake out the doldrums and cobwebs of the mind, body, and soul. Bring a friend and get comfy. Second Sunday of each month, at 9 a.m. For information or to join the "Comfy Team" contact the Rev. Allen Breckenridge.
Campus Closure Scheduled
As part of the Parish's budget reductions, church operations will be shut down again the week of August 8-13. Clergy and staff will be on unpaid furlough and all buildings will be locked and alarmed for the entire week. The Sundays at the beginning and end of the week will offer the normal, published schedule of worship services. Please direct any questions regarding this notice to the Parish Administrator or Rector.

Date Change for Diocesan Convention
Due to a scheduling mixup between the venue and the Diocese, the dates for the Arizona Diocesan Convention have been changed. Convention will be Friday, October 14, and Saturday, October 15. The Diocese apologizes for the inconvenience.
