Greetings! |
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
What's Going On |
The Rev. Dr. Dan Behling
The Rev. Dr. Dan Behling died on Saturday, June 25, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He served as an Affiliated Clergy at St. Philip's since his ordination in 2006. Throughout his illness, he maintained his optimism, faith, and good humor. Dan was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin. When the Korean War began, he joined the Navy as an enlisted medical corpsman. He attended officer-training courses and received his commission. He rose to become a hospital administrator and was stationed in such faraway places as Morocco and Alaska. He also worked for a time at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. Through all of this, Dan studied psychology and counseling. When he retired from the Navy in the late 1970s, he became a psychotherapist. He moved to Laguna Beach, California, and took over the counseling practice established by Bob and Jeanette Renouf when they went to Nicaragua. His work there was especially with recovering alcoholics. During the summers, Dan often studied at the Jung Institute in Zurich, stopping to visit with Bob and Jeanette now in London. When the Renoufs moved to Tucson in 1992, Dan came also. They worked at La Casita and built a counseling practice together. As a young man, before going into the Navy, Dan had considered becoming a Roman Catholic priest. He attended high school at the Carmelite Seminary in Oklahoma, but ultimately decided that particular life was not for him. Around 1980, Dan became an Episcopalian and was very active in his congregation of St. Wilfred's in Huntington Beach, California. He knew he was not called to be a priest, but still felt the ordained ministry was calling to him. The Diaconate seemed to fit the bill, and eventually he moved forward on that lifelong call. He was sponsored by St. Philip's, and was ordained as a deacon five years ago. As a therapist, Dan's focus had been on emotional healing. As a deacon, it was a natural step to focus on ministry to the substance abuse community both at St. Philip's and in the wider Tucson community. As such, he led many workshops and wrote articles in various professional journals. He spearheaded a Twelve-Step Eucharist for the Tucson community at St. Philip's. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's. A reception will follow in the Murphey Gallery. (Adapted from an article written by Mary Lonsdale Baker for Loaves & Fishes) Celebrate Independence Day
Next Sunday, July 3, St. Philip's will celebrate Independence Day with patriotic hymns and choral music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Good ol' fashioned ice cream socials will be hosted by the Parish Life Ministry at 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. Enjoy a wide array of flavors of ice cream and toppings. You are invited to wear red, white, and blue and join the festivities! July 4 Holiday The Church, Office, and campus will be closed on Monday, July 4. Alarms will be activated. |

On the Horizon |

Friends of Music Concert:
French Toast
In honor of Bastille Day, soprano Mary Paul, baritone Larry Alexander, and pianist Bonnie Bird present a salute to French opera, music theater, and cabaret on Sunday, July 10, at 2 p.m. in the Music Center. Enjoy opera arias and duos by the oh-so-French Delibes, Gounod, and Massenet, a couple of favorites from Gigi, and "La Vie en Rose, among others. Don't worry, you won't be asked to sing "La Marseillaise"! Admission is by donation ($15 suggested).
Furlough Week As part of this year's Parish staff budget reductions, church operations will be shut down for three weeks in 2011. One of these is coming up in July: the week of July 11-16. Staff, including clergy, will be on unpaid furlough. All buildings will be locked and alarmed for the entire week. Therefore no meetings or other events will take place on campus during these time periods. Regularly scheduled worship services will be held on the Sundays preceding and following each furlough week. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please direct any questions regarding this notice to the Parish Administrator or Rector.

Food for Thought |
Announcement from the Rector
I am very pleased to announce the good news that I have appointed Ms. Addie Campbell Akin to be St. Philip's Interim Children's Choir Director, effective 15 August 2011 and continuing until we are able to call a new Director of Music (goal is May 2012). Ms. Akin will continue and expand her role with leading the music part of the After School Music Program. Ms. Akin is a graduate student in conducting at the University of Arizona. She has served as a St. Philip's Staff Singer for the past year, and is thus a familiar figure to those engaged in our Music Ministry. Having worked with the After School Music Program last year, she has earned the trust and confidence of the children and adult volunteers. Through the past year, Ms. Akin has collaborated with Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, establishing a strong working relationship with him.
Her appointment, in conjunction with that of Dr. Tom Cockrell as Interim Adult Choir Director, ensures that the music program at St. Philip's will be in good hands during the time of transition. I am also pleased to announce that several members of our music community have stepped forward to assist with important administrative functions. We are fortunate to have such willing and able volunteers to help us through this transition period.
One of Garmon Ashby's strengths was his ability to pastor members of the choir, and those closely related to our music ministry. To compensate a little for this absence during the interim period, I have decided to take on the role of Chaplain to the Choirs.
Faithfully,
John The Reverend John E. Kitagawa, Rector

Search Committee update: Parishioner and professional musician and teacher Gwen Powell will be chairing the search committee to call a new Music Director. I am in the process of appointing the remainder of the committee. They will begin meeting at the end of the summer. Gwen welcomes St. Philippians' ideas and concerns about the future of the music ministry. Emails may be sent to Gwen at gpowell@u.arizona.edu.

Food Pantry Update We have notice an increasing number of people seeking food lately. Perhaps this is due to rising food and gas prices making it hard to make ends meet. The pantry can always use: canned meat and things containing meat; canned fruit and vegetables; canned beans; dried rice and beans. Please bring food in the original, unopened containers. Please do not repackage bulk foods. Food can be brought to the office during regular hours. If shopping is difficult, you can support the Food Pantry by donating funds. Checks can be donated through the office with Food Pantry in the memo line. This allows us to shop for specific items we need.Your generosity keeps the Food Pantry going. Thank you!
Prayer for SPY Missionaries Through July 2, the SPY youth group will be on mission to Teec Nos Pos on the Navajo Nation. When we blessed them prior to their trip, the congregation promised to pray for them while they are on mission.
Gracious God, I pray that missionaries David Argentati, Aviry Christy, David Christy, Matthew Fairbanks, Theresa Huckleberry, Josh Prescott-Smith, Nicole Rochon, Sidney Ryan, Ben Traquair, and Zach Winston, and leaders Blake Hutson, Carrie Wright, and Virginia Kat, be filled with the Holy Spirit, and will walk daily in your power. I pray that you will create in them a servant's heart. I ask that you help these St. Philip's missionaries live and labor each day for your Glory and that these young people will be the vessel through which your love can flow to others. Please grant them a clear knowledge of your specific directions for their ministry. Protect them as they do your work in the world. Grant them an ever deepening relationship with your Son, Jesus Christ. All this I pray in His name. Amen.
