Greetings! |
Sunday we will celebrate Trinity Sunday, when we seek to understand the mystery of the interconnected relationships within God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Likewise we are also interconnected in a three-fold relationship: with God, with each other, and with Creation. We invite you to partake of the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's, seeking ways to explore these relationships. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |

Celebration of Garmon Ashby's Ministry
Sunday, June 26, will be Music Director Garmon Ashby's last Sunday with us. As many of you know, he has accepted a new post as Performing Arts Department Chair, Choirmaster, and Organist at the Episcopal High School, in Houston, Texas. We will celebrate Garmon's ministry that Sunday at a reception at 12:15 p.m., which will be held in the Music Center.

In recognition of Garmon's many contributions to St. Philips, the Vestry voted unanimously to establish the Garmon Ashby Legacy Fund for the After School Music Program. The Garmon Ashby ASMP Legacy Fund celebrates and honors Garmon's gifts and talents as a musician and educator and his service and outreach to the Tucson Community on behalf of all of us at St. Philip's. Garmon co-originated the idea of the After School Music Program, and the success of the program is due in part to his creativity, persistence, and leadership. The program reaches out to the nearby Tucson community to provide musical experience and tutoring to students from nearby schools who would not otherwise have access to this type of program. The Fund provides an opportunity for members of the St. Philip's family and others to join in recognition of Garmon's legacy: musical excellence that enhances the worship experience and draws people to St. Philip's, a musical experience for our children and youth that brings them nearer to the church, and using music as an outreach to the broader Tucson community. Contributions (tax deductible) may be made to the fund by sending a check made out to St. Philip's In The Hills, with Garmon Ashby Legacy Fund in the memo line. There will also be donation tables during Coffee Hour this Sunday.
Also on June 26
Friends of Music's popular Summer Concert Series begins on Sunday, June 26! At 3 p.m. in the Church, violist Yvonne Creanga and cellist Theodore Buchholz will present a pair of duos and a duo of solo suites. Together they will perform Duos for Viola and Cello by Paul Hindemith, a German 20th-century composer who is described as one of the main innovators of musical modernism, and influential American composer Walter Piston. In addition, each will present a solo suite for their instrument by J. S. Bach. Yvonne and Theodore are both Tucson Symphony musicians as well as teachers and recitalists.
St. Philip's fourth Sunday home maintenance workshop series continues on Sunday, June 26, at 12:30 p.m. in the East Gallery. The St. Philip's "Phixers," a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church, sponsor this series of classes on general home maintenance topics. Professionals from the community teach different topics each month. On June 26: Keep the rain! Scott Calhoun of Zona Gardens will explain how to build your own rainwater-harvesting cistern. Scott's books will also be available for purchase. Who knows, you may find new ways to save money by "doing it yourself."
St. Francis Guild, St. Philip's new animal ministry, continues its fourth-Sunday collections benefitting various animal rescue groups. On Sunday, June 26, the collection will be dedicated to the Tucson Wildlife Center for rescue, rehab and release back into the wild. They need: kitty litter, unscented Scoop Away; paper towels; office supplies; garbage bags; Ziploc bags; peanuts, bagged unsalted; hand soap; hand lotion; white towels. Please bring your donations to the table during Coffee Hour on Sunday, June 26. There will also be a meeting of those interested in this ministry at 10:15 a.m. in the Renouf/Nelson Library. For further information, contact the Rev. Sally Stevens-Taylor at 229-9170.

Music Department News
I am very pleased to announce the good news that I have appointed Dr. Thomas Cockrell to be St. Philip's Interim Adult Choir Director, effective 15 August 2011 and continuing until we are able to call a new Director of Music (goal is May 2012). We are very fortunate that Dr. Cockrell has offered his talents during this transition time. He has a distinguished resume. He is currently the Director of Orchestral Activities, Nelson Riddle Endowed Chair at The University of Arizona, School of Music; the Artistic Director at Opera in the Ozarks at Inspiration Point ; and, Conductor at Opera Theater of the Rockies. Dr. Cockrell is well known to and respected by St. Philip's musicians, having worked with them in the past. Importantly, Dr. Cockrell enjoys a strong collegial relationship with Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, who continues as St. Philip's Associate Music Director. Their collaboration is critical for the continuation of St. Philip's strong tradition of excellent liturgical music. Dr. Cockrell, his wife, Yvonne, and children Alexandra and James are active parishioners. As a part-time paid member of the staff, he will take a brief sabbatical from his term on the Vestry in order to avoid any conflicts of interest.
I look forward to making an announcement in the very near future about another important area of the music ministry: interim leadership for the Boy and Girl Choirs and the music education portion of the After School Music Program. Members of the choir are volunteering to take on various and sundry of the administrative responsibilities necessary to having an effective music program.
A search committee to call a new Director of Music is being formed. Gwen Powell has agreed to chair this important process. The committee will provide interim updates about their progress in this effort.
Faithfully,
John The Reverend John E. Kitagawa, Rector
THANK YOU!! Because of your generosity, Positive Change collected enough change and bills to send $350 to Episcopal Relief and Development and $350 to Casa Maria! During May and June, we have been collecting money to go to the After School Music Progam. During July and August, your donations will go to Pima County Interfaith Council (PCIC). You are definitely making a difference!!
Casa Maria Needs You! St. Philips' Casa Maria ministry, which provides about 800 lunches to Casa Maria every 4th Saturday to help our neighbors in need, is in need of a leader. Responsibilities once a month include ordering the food, being at the church on the Thursday prior to Casa Maria Saturday to accept delivery of the food, and supervising the volunteers on the Saturday. The volunteers are already in place, including someone who drives the van filled with food down to Casa Maria. Ideally, we'd love to have a couple, or 2 friends, to share the leadership of this ministry, but anyone willing and able would be welcomed with open arms! If you are interested, please call Nancy Atherton at 269-0699.
The next Casa Maria sandwich making will be Saturday, June 25, beginning at 7:45 a.m. in the East Gallery. All helping hands are welcome!
Called to be a Spiritual Director? Tacheria Interfaith Spirituality Center School of Spiritual Direction is now accepting applications for the next interfaith course in the training of those called to a vocation of spiritual direction or for those who are yearning for answers to their spiritual questions and want to be able to do something with this yearning. This course encompasses the beliefs of the world's major religions and is open to ordained and non-ordained men and women. Spiritual leaders from many disciplines make up the faculty and share their insights, knowledge, wisdom, and experience during the two years of the class. The School will begin in September, 2011. Classes occur monthly on the second Saturday of each month for two ten-month sessions (September-June). There is also a weekend retreat each year (January). Learning in the school is both didactic and experiential. Enrollment is limited and a genuine commitment to attending all of the sessions is important. Information and an application form are available at www.tacheriacenter.org. Interviews will be conducted beginning in May. A completed application is necessary for the interview to be held. Fees for the course are $500 per year not including the retreat cost. Some scholarship help is available. For further information, contact Linda or Frank Williams, 297-6098, or by e-mail at tacheriacenter@aol.com.
