Dear Friends in Christ,
As we wrap up our 2011 stewardship campaign, we want to thank those of you who have allowed us to finish the campaign at a level of $1,073K -- up about $60K from last year. Many of you increased your pledge levels, and many responded to our secondary campaign to increase even further. Pledging is the response of a generous heart to the bountiful gifts God shares with us daily -- our life, our talents and our financial resources. We are grateful so many of you have responded to our invitation to ministry by sharing from personal resources. Thanks also to the many pledging winter members, whose contributions to our parish are substantial in many ways, and to the many who contribute their time, talent and treasure in ways beyond pledging.
Your vestry is committed to maintaining St. Philip's as a top tier parish with a vital membership, a multitude of programs and ministries, liturgy and music in the finest of Episcopal traditions, and a dedicated staff that works hard to make our parish all it can be for all of us, for our community, and hopefully for many who are looking for a vital spiritual home.
But despite our 2011 pledge success, we write this letter to inform all parishioners that St. Philip's will still have the need to delve into our budget reserves during the 2011 year to the tune of about $160K, even with the reduced staffing and spending levels that have been announced. 2011 is the last year in which we will be able to use our diminishing reserves to this extent in order to maintain St. Philip's rich tradition of worship, music, programming, ministries and outreach. In short, we will need to make further significant cuts in future budgets unless financial support, especially pledged financial support, from all of us rises to a level that will allow us to operate sustainably at current program levels.
Those who attended this year's three part annual meeting heard the following numbers, but many who did not attend need to understand the seriousness of St. Philip's financial situation:
The average 2011 pledge at our church is $1,927 -- significantly below the latest available 2009 national average of $2,314 for all Episcopal churches, $2,178 for Province 8 which includes Arizona, and even the $1,960 Diocesan average for Episcopal parishes in Arizona. Programmatically we are near the top, but in terms of individual pledged financial support, we are nearer the bottom.
We count 557 pledges from a recorded membership of about 1,200; while all financial support is important and appreciated, only about half of St. Philippians actually pledge the funds that constitute the lion's share of our annual income, which allows us to plan and prepare our annual operating budgets. As Bishop Kirk Smith reminded us in his homily on May 1, there is a difference between pledging and random giving. "Pledging" comes from our first fruits, and is an act of sacrifice and faith, while "giving" comes more from our surplus -- an important distinction.
You all know that our recent financial shortfall has led to layoffs, continuing staff furloughs, deferred expenditures and other cost saving measures that threaten our continued programming. Our staff has been asked to sacrifice on our behalf, when in fact, the real necessity is for us to do what is needed to fulfill our contractual obligations to them. Our expectations for programming continue, and it is your vestry's commitment to maintain St. Philip's rich traditions. Our staff has willingly stepped up to support those traditions, despite our failures to make good on our financial obligations to them.
As one attends St. Philip's it is easy to presume that it is a wealthy parish. The campus is magnificent. Services, music, programming, workshops, continuing education and community outreach are extensive and caringly done. Most of us are drawn to St. Philips because of these rich traditions of excellence, yet for reasons hard to understand, we fail to support our beloved parish to an extent that sustainably funds the programming that we love and look forward to on a weekly basis.
We are rich in our spiritual traditions, but as you can see, we are not a financially wealthy parish. A parish is truly "wealthy" only when its members value its offerings to the extent that they are willing to support them at a sustainable level.
We are asking all St. Philippians to reflect and pray about our current financial situation. We invite you to join with us, as we look toward the end of our 75th year and the start of 2012 and our next 75 years, in committing to a level of financial stewardship, through pledging, that will allow our beloved parish to continue in its rich tradition of worship, music, liturgy, pastoral care, education and outreach. As we go forward, let us support our programs and ministries, our community, our dedicated staff, our wonderful facility, and our lives together in Christ, as they are enriched by all that we experience in this wonderful place.
Quite simply, it is up to us!

Saturday: Tailgate Rummage Sale!
St. Philip's Tailgate Rummage Sale returns by popular demand! A Tailgate Rummage Sale is a one-day sale event for those who have extra items around their house but have various excuses for not holding their own garage sale: not quite enough items, think it's too much trouble, don't want strangers at their home, or it's against homeowners' association policy. After our successful "boot sale" (from the British term for automobile trunk) last fall, we are having another Tailgate Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 21, beginning at 7 a.m. How it works: Pack up your vehicle with your unwanted items, priced as you choose, and come to St. Philip's north parking lot at 7 a.m. on the day of the sale. You'll hold your own tailgate sale: you will be in charge of sales out of your own vehicle, taking in your profits. When you are done, you pack up or donate your stuff (there will be donation boxes available). The fee is $25 per car for your space ($30 for trucks) and will be paid to the committee on the day of the sale. That is the only cost to you. Be sure to invite your friends and neighbors to participate, and to come and shop! No advance arrangements need to be made - just show up, sell, and shop! Snacks and drinks will be available for sale. Come early for the best parking spots and biggest bargains!
"Comfy Space" Service May 22 The next "Comfy Space" service -- worship geared for those who wiggle in church and those who worship with them -- will be on Sunday, May 22, at 9 a.m. in the Children's Courtyard. Based on the scripture passage "In my Father's House are many Mansions," we are going to pitch a tent and place things in there that remind us that God was present with us in Jesus and continues to be present with us in the gift of the Holy Spirit. This will also be a celebration of the "Comfy Space" ministry of the Rev. Clare Yarborough.

Celebration of Clare's Ministry May 29 The Rev. Clare Yarborough's last Sunday at St. Philip's is May 29. She will preach at all morning services. We will honor her at a reception in the Gallery following the 11:15 service. There will be cake, tributes to her ministry, and a purse of gratitude from the Parish. If you would like to make a contribution, please send it to St. Philip's, attention Bonnie Flint. Your check should be made out to St. Philip's In The Hills with a note in the memo line: Clare Yarborough. This is not a tax deductible donation. A book of letters is being collected to be presented to Clare. If you would like to add yours, please prepare it on 8.5 x 11 paper and mail it UNFOLDED to St. Philip's, P.O. Box 65840, Tucson, 85728-5840, attn. Stella Lopez (or you may place it in Stella's box in the office).

Important Outreach Meeting Sunday May 22 As you know from John Kitigawa's sermons and writings recently, evangelism is an important focus for St. Philip's now and in the future. The Outreach Commission is and has been an important part of St. Philip's mission to reach out into the world to spread Christ's love. However, we are in desperate need of more people to become involved in this mission. Many of you are already involved in Outreach, whether you call it that or not, either through St. Philip's or in your life outside. We need your views on what, how much, and where Outreach should be focusing to best use our scant resources to further St. Philip's evangelical mission. Please plan to attend the Outreach meeting Sunday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. in La Paz, to help us determine Outreach's vision and future. We would particularly welcome insights from our younger parishioners, including from our youth groups and young professionals. Refreshments will be available. Thank you!

BOOP Concert Benefits St. Philip's Summer Music Tucson's most famous and fabulous double reed players present ... a CONCERT! Join BOOP (Bassoons & Oboes of the Old Pueblo) for an evening of music and magic, Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in the Church. A unique collaboration of musicians from the University of Arizona, the Bella Carita Chamber Orchestra, the Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) program, and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra bring you the sonorous stylings of the best instruments in the world-Oboes and Bassoons and English Horns and Contrabassoons! If you haven't heard them up close like this, you just haven't heard them yet. Features you can only hear at this concert: 1 Piano, 1 Contrabassoon, 1 English horn, 1 Clever name, 2 Oboes, 6 Bassoons, 9 Musicians, 10 Double Reeds, 10 Reedy Selections, 72 Minutes, 200 smiling faces (hopefully), 334 Keys, and about 98,322 Notes (maybe ... we didn't count). From serious to shenanigans. Admission by donation. Proceeds benefit St. Philip's worship to support Staff Singers at summer services.
Clay Classes Begin June 1 St. Philip's Health Ministries offers "Create and Rejuvenate with Clay," classes that teach hand-building with clay. These classes are more than merely instruction in techniques, however; they are designed to provide an atmosphere in which participants can revitalize their creativity, boost their spirits, relax and have fun, and be rejuvenated. Instruction, provided by artists Tim and Pamala Ballingham, is appropriate for beginners to advanced clay workers (17 years and older). Morning and evening classes are offered, beginning in June through the end of July. Classes are offered Wednesday mornings and evenings, Friday mornings, and Monday evenings. The Monday series costs $134 and the other series cost $168. Tuition includes clay, use of tools and state-of-the-art equipment, instruction, firing, and clear glaze. Students purchase their own colored glazes. More information, including enrollment information, is available on the web site. Prospective students should first call 790-7061 to verify that space is available in a particular class. St. Philip's clay classes are pottery-making with a difference!
Called to be a Spiritual Director? Tacheria Interfaith Spirituality Center School of Spiritual Direction is now accepting applications for the next interfaith course in the training of those called to a vocation of spiritual direction or for those who are yearning for answers to their spiritual questions and want to be able to do something with this yearning. This course encompasses the beliefs of the world's major religions and is open to ordained and non-ordained men and women. Spiritual leaders from many disciplines make up the faculty and share their insights, knowledge, wisdom, and experience during the two years of the class. The School will begin in September, 2011. Classes occur monthly on the second Saturday of each month for two ten-month sessions (September-June). There is also a weekend retreat each year (January). Learning in the school is both didactic and experiential. Enrollment is limited and a genuine commitment to attending all of the sessions is important. Information and an application form are available at www.tacheriacenter.org. Interviews will be conducted beginning in May. A completed application is necessary for the interview to be held. Fees for the course are $500 per year not including the retreat cost. Some scholarship help is available.
