Greetings! |
Much is happening at St. Philip's as we wind down the Season after Epiphany and prepare to enter Lent. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities and follow where God is next calling you, as we "cross over" from hearing to doing God's work. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
What's Going On |
20th Annual Bach Marathon

St. Philip's Friends of Music presents its 20th Annual Bach Marathon on Friday and Sunday, March 4 and 6.
On Friday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m.,"Music Influenced by Bach" will feature viola soloist Yvonne Creanga with the Bach Marathon Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Thomas Cockrell, performing both original works and arrangements by Reger, Mozart, Enescu, Hindemith, and Bloch.
On Sunday, March 6, the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services will feature special music: J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D. St. Philip's adult choirs, soloists, and chamber orchestra, directed by Garmon Ashby, St. Philip's Director of Music, will perform this great work in the liturgical setting for which it was intended. In addition, former Music Director and Associate Rector the Rev. John Hooker will preach.
At 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, St. Philip's Associate Music Director and Organist, will present the third concert in the series"Bach and the Dance of God," featuring the organ chorales from the Leipzig Manuscript. These eighteen chorale preludes by J.S. Bach reflect the mastery of compositional forms shown in all facets of style, texture, and expressive content possible on the organ. Bach imbues each setting with a particular style and harmonic richness which seeks to portray, in music, the particular text, or mood of each of these Lutheran chorales. The Holtkamp pipe organ of St. Philip's is particularly suited to the performance of Bach's organ music, and this recital continues the celebration of the 25th anniversary of its installation.
Second Annual Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair
St. Philip's will hold its second Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair on Sunday, March 6, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in the Murphey Gallery. This fair will bring a full range of resources and experts to address a variety of issues regarding elder care. Seniors and anyone preparing for or already responsible for caring for an aging adult will benefit from this fair.
We have an impressive slate of exhibitors for the 2011 Family Caregiver and Senior Resource Fair -- a wide range of Tucson's senior and caregiver resources from health care to home care, assisted living to Alzheimer's, fitness to financial planning, long-term care to legal care and more! The fair features informational booths for agencies and organizations who take pride in providing excellent services to our caregiver and senior community, all in one venue.
Meet with representatives and experts from local agencies; view exhibits; obtain brochures and handouts; get free health screenings, housing information, giveaways, and door prizes; and have your questions answered in a relaxed, informal setting. This event is sponsored by St. Philip's Eldercare Ministry. This ministry grew out of the "dreams" that were expressed during the Mission Discernment process carried out at St. Philip's in 2008.
Join us for an information-packed day!

On the Horizon |
Lent Begins Next Week!
Blessed Palms Needed
Please bring last year's blessed palms from Palm Sunday to be burned on Shrove Tuesday to provide ashes for Ash Wednesday. There is a receptacle for them in the office.
 Shrove Tuesday
St. Philip's J2A youth group is sponsoring a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper with a Mardi Gras theme on Tuesday, March 8. Food and fun begin at 6:15 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery, featuring pancakes, sausage, vegetarian sausage, fresh fruit, and beverages. Proceeds will help support the J2A Pilgrimage in summer 2012. The cost is $6 per person. Shrove Tuesday takes its name from the verb "shrive," which means to obtain absolution for one's sins. Christians ask for forgiveness for their sins in preparation for the Lenten season, a penitential season of turning to God. The tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday comes from the need to use up such ingredients as sugar, fat, and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent (this is also the origin of the term "Mardi Gras," or "fat Tuesday").
The supper will be followed by a night prayer and palm burning service at 7 p.m. Palms that were blessed the previous Palm Sunday are burned to be used on Ash Wednesday. The service marks the transition between the community pancake supper celebration and the penitential season of Lent. "Alleluias" are said for the final time before Easter, and the focus is on the need for God's grace, in preparation for the celebration of God's marvelous redemption at Easter.
Ash Wednesday
St. Philip's offers four Ash Wednesday services. At 7:30 a.m. there will be a Holy Eucharist Rite I service with imposition of ashes. The Rev. Sally Stevens-Taylor will preach. At noon the Holy Eucharist Rite II service with imposition of ashes includes congregational hymn singing. The Rev. Dr. Clare Yarborough is preacher. The After-School Music Program Choir will help lead worship at a "Comfy Space" family Ash Wednesday service at 5:30 p.m. This service (held in the Church) includes prayers, music, a story, and imposition of ashes (no Eucharist). At 7 p.m. there will be a Sung Eucharist Rite II service with imposition of ashes. The Rev. Blake R. Hutson will preach.
Lenten Recitals
St. Philip's Friends of Music continues the tradition of presenting noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. in the Music Center. Thursday March 10 will feature a program of dramatic ballads by lesser-known composer Carl Loewe (1796-1869), also known as the "Schubert of North Germany," as he composed over 400 ballads and songs in his lifetime. Loewe's compositional style is known for imaginative melodic lines to portray characters and daring accompaniments atmospherically appropriate to the poetry. Baritone Brian Witkowski accompanied by Elliot Jones will perform a variety of ballads by Loewe ranging from simple and folk-like to dramatic and sublime.
The series continues on Thursday, March 17, with "Enchanting Classical Guitar" presented by Michael Lich, featuring works by Bach, Scarlatti, and Albeniz, as well as a sonata written for him by local composer David Isaac. Subsequent recitals include "L'Italiana Canta" with soprano Dianne Iauco, "A Musical Potpourri for a Spring Afternoon" presented by the oh-so-French Zephyrus Trio d'Anches (Cindy Behmer, oboe, Kevin Justus, clarinet, and Cassandra Bendickson, bassoon), "Four Hand Fiesta!" with pianists Mary Lonsdale Baker and Jeffrey Campbell, and a program of instrumental music presented by violist Yvonne Creanga and friends. Admission is by donation.

Conservation and Conflict in the Sky Island Borderlands
On Sunday, March 13, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz, learn about the Sky Island region, the threats it faces, and how you can help protect this special place. The Sky Island region of southeastern Arizona, southwestern Mexico, and northern Mexico is a hotspot for biodiversity. A blend of tropical and temperate, this region harbors well over half the bird species of North America, over 3,000 species of plants, and over 100 species of mammals -- a diversity exceeding anywhere else in the U.S. The survival of this region is threatened by dramatically increased border security activities and the resulting shifts in human migration. One of the most dire threats is the U.S.-Mexico border fence, which slices across ecosystems, cuts off critical wildlife linkages, and damages fragile riparian areas. Our guest will be Jenny Neeley, Conservation Policy Director for Sky Island Alliance, a grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island region. Jenny is a licensed attorney, holds a masters degree in natural resources policy, and has worked on conservation issues in the Arizona borderlands for almost 15 years.
Community Vigil at El Tiradito Shrine
Join St. Philippians on Wednesday, March 17, to remember our brothers and sisters who perished or are lost in the desert. Meet people from the local immigration reform community and discuss concerns over US immigration and border policies. The vigil is held every Thursday at 7 p.m., and is sponsored by Derechos Humanos. We'll meet at St. Philips north parking lot at 5:30 p.m. to carpool to dinner at El Minuto (or meet us at the restaurant at 6:00-ish); after dinner we'll attend the vigil, next to the restaurant parking lot. Contact Suzanne, BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org
Spanish Intensive at Chapel Rock
Episcopal Border Ministry is sponsoring a week-long Spanish language intensive at Chapel Rock, March 14-18. The cost ($325; single occupancy add $80) includes meals, lodging, and Spanish instruction. The instructor is Guillermo Retana, professor of Spanish at Cochise College. The course will include small group conversation with native Spanish speakers and each evening will include a charla (chat) in English pertaining to issues around Latino ministry in the Diocese of Arizona. All levels of Spanish proficiency are encouraged to attend. We will study hard, play well, encourage and laugh with one another, and appreciate the new frontiers that Spanish proficiency will bring us and those whom we serve. A registration form is available here. For more information email the Rev. Seth Polley, Diocesan Border Missioner, or call (520) 236-8561.
Volunteer Opportunity: First Sunday Food Drive
The Outreach Commission is looking for a Coordinator for the First Sunday Food Collection ministry. For the past three years a team of volunteers from Sun City has overseen the collection of food items for the Interfaith Community Services Food Bank and St. Philip's own Food Pantry. For reasons of aging and natural attrition this important ministry needs to be turned over to others in the parish.
A team member is scheduled for each Sunday morning service to stand at the food collection table, accept the food (or cash) donations, greet passers-by, take a basket forward at the Offertory and, after the service, take collected items into the Ferguson Room. After the last service or on the following Monday morning two other team members sort and box the food items for the two food shelves, cart the St. Philip's distribution to the Food Pantry and either carry the ICS boxes to the car of the food pantry volunteer who drives them to ICS or, if no such volunteer is available, drives the boxes the several miles to ICS.
Responsibilities of the Team Coordinator are to: 1) recruit and orient team members, 2) schedule them for the three services and sorting session, 3) communicate with the Food Pantry coordinator, 4) post notices in Sunday bulletins and other communication sources, 5) maintain signs, food boxes, and other supplies, and 6) communicate with Monday ICS driver or arrange with volunteers for such transportation. Communicating the need for and expanding the numbers of donors is a welcome attribute. The Coordinator needs to be reliable, conscientious and able to work independently. The time commitment is approximately four or five hours per month. Email Chuck Converse or call 825-9118 for further information.
