Greetings! |
2011 activities are in full swing at St. Philip's. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities and follow where God is next calling you, as we "cross over" from hearing to doing God's work. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
What's Going On |
"Pep Rally" for Youth Programs
Join families, youth, and leaders for a "pep rally" and discussion of how to organize ourselves to move forward with youth programming. Sodas ... treats ... popcorn ... we would like to see every family and youth there ... as well as any interested person in the parish! Replaces youth programs this Sunday only.
For more information: Alison Lee, Peggy Wilder, or Virginia Kat.
Budget Review Session Sunday
You have an opportunity to take a thorough look at St. Philip's 2011 budget on Sunday, February 13. Join new treasurer Raymond Dewey in the Murphey Gallery at 12:30 p.m. Bring your questions!
Thrift Store Exploratory Meeting
A committee is being formed to explore the concept of creating a "Recycle Store" that could generate much-needed funds to carry on outreach programs and help our church operating fund. It would also serve as a way to offer our unwanted items to those in need. An exploratory meeting to determine if there is interest in starting such a ministry will be held on Tuesday, February 15, at 4 p.m. in the West Gallery. The most important factor in such an enterprise is a large body of volunteers. Please attend!
Derechos Humanos' Weekly Vigil
Join St. Philippians as we remember our brothers and sisters who perished or are lost in the desert. Discuss the concerns over US immigration and border policies. Meet at St. Philip's north parking lot on Thursday, February 17, at 5:30 p.m., to carpool to dinner at El Minuto, after which we'll attend the vigil at El Tiradito Shrine. Information: Suzanne Hesh, BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org.
Clearance Sale
Exciting changes are underway at the Little Shop across the fishpond garden from the church. Markdowns have been taken! Many coasters, notepads, figurines and children's items have been reduced. We're making room for some exciting new products that will arrive soon. Shop for your Valentine, or pick up small gifts for Mother's Day, graduations, or even stocking stuffers! Stop by and browse the Little Shop, and make sure and come back often to see the changes!

Cursillo
Have you attended a Cursillo retreat weekend? . . . here or elsewhere? We are looking to connect with Cursillistas here at St. Phillips. If Cursillo is a part of your journey, please look for the table in the Perry Garden on February 27. Step up and make yourself known. Also, for those who haven't experienced this weekend of renewal, please stop by. If you'd rather, you can email Don Veitch.
Spanish Intensive at Chapel Rock
Episcopal Border Ministry is sponsoring a week-long Spanish language intensive at Chapel Rock, March 14-18. The cost ($325; single occupancy add $80) includes meals, lodging, and Spanish instruction. The instructor is Guillermo Retana, professor of Spanish at Cochise College. The course will include small group conversation with native Spanish speakers and each evening will include a charla (chat) in English pertaining to issues around Latino ministry in the Diocese of Arizona. All levels of Spanish proficiency are encouraged to attend. We will study hard, play well, encourage and laugh with one another, and appreciate the new frontiers that Spanish proficiency will bring us and those whom we serve. A registration form is available here. For more information email the Rev. Seth Polley, Diocesan Border Missioner, or call (520) 236-8561.
Tacheria Workshop
Tacheria Interfaith Spirituality Center presents "A New Creation: Vision for Planet Earth" with Dr. Robert Jonas -- a daylong retreat on Nouwen's reflections on Creation and the environmental crisis. Saturday, March 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Children's Chapel. The retreat will include presentation on Nouwen's life and writing, silent meditation, small group sharing, and a short film of Nouwen preaching. A Christian in the Carmelite tradition, Dr. Jonas received training with Buddhist teachers and is a member of the Society for Buddhist-Christian studies. He is also an environmentalist and a musician. Preregistration is requested: 299-9063. $25 donation.

Presiding Bishop's Visit The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori spent a very full day at St. Philip's last Sunday. She celebrated and preached at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, and moderated a question and answer forum in between. After a brief press conference, she was the homilist at a choral Evensong service, and the day concluded with a gala banquet at the University of Arizona Student Union Ballroom attended by 550 from St. Philip's, the Tucson community, and other communities in southern Arizona. The Rev. John Kitagawa invited Bishop Jefferts Schori to help us celebrate our 75th Anniversary year.
A wonderful summary of her visit written by Greta Huls, Diocesan Canon for Communications, is posted on the Diocesan web site. It includes several brief videos as well as links to her three sermons and online photo albums (including these photos). The Presiding Bishop's sermons are also posted on St. Philip's web site.

Watch for information about an audio CD of the services soon to be available from the Music Department.
The Presiding Bishop seems to have had a profound effect on many who came in contact with her on Sunday. We are interested in gathering your impressions for possible use in Loaves & Fishes. If you would like to share a brief thought or anecdote, please email loavesandfishes@stphilipstucson.org or reply to this message.
St. Philip's Day Fiesta Sunday, May 8, at noon in the Plaza. This vibrant event celebrates the first 75 years of St. Philip's Southwestern culture with ethnic food, music, fun, and friendship.
Watch for further information about these and many other special "happenings" as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary.

Loaves & Fishes
Be sure to check out the online version of Loaves & Fishes. It contains additional amplifying material for a couple of the articles, plus a multipage color photo spread of St. Philip's many ministries and activities during the fall.
Tucson Tragedy Even though it has been a month, Tucsonans are probably still be feeling fragile in light of the tragic shootings on January 8. Many of us are seeking: seeking comfort, seeking community, seeking a way to make sense of it all. Faith in God does not protect anyone from bad things happening to us, our communities or families; and faith does not shield us from the impact of horrendous events in our lives, our communities or families. Faith can give us the courage and strength to work through the most difficult situations and times.
There is a special page on St. Philip's web site that contains some prayers and reflections on the tragedy.
Community Partnership of Southern Arizona has established a support line. Calls are answered by professionals at the agency and it is free. (520) 284-3517.
Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, joined Bishops Gerald Kicanas, Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Tucson, and Minerva Carcano, Bishop of the Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as judicatory leaders and clergy from many faith communities, including St. Philip's, at a Service of Cleansing and Healing at La Toscana Shopping Center last Thursday. Subtitled Reverencing the Space and Blessing the Community, the service was a meaningful and healing way to reclaim the space in front of Safeway for the good of all. "... Consecrate our tears, our tokens, and our expressions of service. Guide us to be beacons of hope from the corner of Ina and Oracle to the four corners of the world. Amen."
Our Rector, John Kitagawa, placed a paper chain made by the participants in our After-School Music and Homework Program on the shrine there so their wishes and prayers could join those of so many others. More photos, as well as the liturgy, are posted on Facebook on the St. Philip's Group page.
