Greetings! |
Hope and new possibilities abound at Christmas. What better way to celebrate the good news of Jesus' birth than to join your parish family in worship on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! What's Going On |
Greening of the Church Today! Everyone is welcome to help with the Greening of the Church on Wednesday, December 22, beginning at 5:00 p.m. or as soon as you can arrive after work. We will break for supper at 6:00 p.m. (please bring a dessert to share), then return to work after supper to complete the Greening. Festive music provided by the Tucson Flute Club will begin at 6:30. Helpers of all ages are welcome, but if you happen to be young, strong, and tall, you are especially needed for the post-supper portion of the evening.
CD Available Christmas Eve "Let Every Heart Prepare" is our new CD of Advent and Christmas music performed by St. Philip's choirs and instrumentalists, recorded to celebrate our 75th Anniversary. CDs are available on Sunday mornings during coffee hour, as well as through the Music Department. $15 each ($12.50 each for 2, $10 each for 4 or more). CDs will be available on Christmas Eve from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day ServicesChristmas Eve is a joyous time at St. Philip's. It is also a time when a large number of people attend services. This is a wonderful opportunity to show St. Philip's hospitality by greeting those whom you don't recognize.
The 4 p.m. service on Christmas Eve is a communion service especially designed for toddlers and preschoolers and their families. Music will feature organ and the Choir Chimes. Attendees are invited to bring Baby Jesus from their home crèche (Nativity Set) to be blessed. The service is followed by a live Nativity scene in the church plaza, reenacted by children and a young family from St. Philip's. At 5:20 p.m., music begins, which leads into an All-Generations Eucharist at 5:30 p.m. This is a Holy Eucharist service for school-aged children and their families. Music is provided by the Boy and Girl Choirs, with trumpet and organ, as well as congregational carol singing. The Chalice Players, a group of youth, will dramatize the Christmas story. The 7 p.m. Candlelit Eucharist with Carols is preceded by music beginning at 6:50. This quiet, reflective Choral Eucharist service includes carols led by the Schola Cantorum, with the St. Philip's Ringers, harp, trumpet, and organ, as well as congregational carols. The 9 and 11 p.m. Festival Eucharist services begin with music 10 minutes before the hour. The service music is W. A. Mozart's Missa Brevis in C (also known as "Sparrow Mass"), scored for choir, soloists, chamber orchestra, and organ. There will also be popular carols for congregational singing. The 11 p.m. service includes incense. On Christmas Day, congregational carol singing begins at 10:50, followed by the Feast of the Nativity at 11 a.m., which is a Holy Eucharist Rite II service with choir and well-loved congregational carols. On Christmas Eve at 7, 9, and 11 p.m., a priority place in line is given to parishioners. We make every effort to accommodate everyone who wishes to worship with us. You will likely be waiting in line outdoors and should dress accordingly. Although there will be security on site, it is advisable not to leave belongings in vehicles. Still Time to See Visions of St. Philip's
"Visions of St. Philip's" will be on display at St. Philip's the rest of December and then will travel to several venues in Tucson, returning to St. Philip's in May of 2011. This juried show includes 36 works by 33 artists, including watercolor, oils, colored pencil, clay metal, acrylics, and photography. A total of $1000 was awarded - the first time the Gallery has ever given cash prizes. Presented in celebration of St. Philip's 75th Anniversary and honoring our history of supporting arts and artists in the community.

On the Horizon |
Holiday and Furlough ClosuresThe office, Church, and campus will be closed the week after Christmas. December 27 and 28 are Christmas holidays for the staff. As part of the Parish's budget reductions, church operations will be shut down the rest of the week. Clergy and staff will be on unpaid furlough and all buildings will be locked and alarmed. The Sundays at the beginning and end of the week will offer the normal, published schedule of worship services. On Monday, January 3, the office, Church, and campus will be closed for New Year's holiday. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, January 4. Sunday, January 2First Sunday Music: Organ Plus! On Sunday, January 2, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, special instrumental music will celebrate the diversity and depth of St. Philip's vital and ongoing ministry of music as we begin our 75th anniversary year. Music will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the installation of St. Philip's Holtkamp pipe organ, dedicated in 1986 as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the parish. Several professional instrumentalists who are themselves parishioners will perform with organist Jeffrey Campbell in repertoire that features the distinctive voices of flute, viola, harp, clarinet, and cello in a variety of music that enhances the worship. Guest instrumentalists are Sandy Schwoebel, flute; Kevin Justus, clarinet; Yvonne Creanga, viola; Nancy Monsman, cello; and Patricia Harris, harp. Food for Hunger Food DriveAs is our custom on First Sundays, food offerings may be brought to the Fishpond Garden. Food will be shared between our food pantry and the Interfaith Community Services food bank. Healers EucharistsOn Sunday, January 2, we will celebrate the gifts of healers in our community and our lives with special Healers Eucharists at 9 and 11:15 a.m. Two parishioners engaged in healing ministries, the Rev. Sally Stevens-Taylor and Dr. Barbara Cone, will be our preachers. We will use the appointed readings for the Feast of St. Luke at those services. Prayer shawls will be blessed at all services.
The Feast of the Epiphany Service On Thursday, January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany will be celebrated with a quiet candlelit service at 6:30 p.m. in the Church.
Sunday, January 9Male Voice Choir Reunion On Sunday January 9, at the 11:15 a.m. service, members of the former St. Philip's Male Voice Choir will join our tenors and basses under the direction of former Director of Music Dr. Lane Justus. This is one of the many musical components of our 75th anniversary year, and a celebration of our rich musical past. "Snowbird" SundayOn Sunday, January 9, our Winter Residents (may we call you Snowbirds?) will be recognized at all services. At 10:15 a.m. in the West Gallery, Snowbirds are invited to join other Snowbirds (lots of them) to learn how St. Philip's can serve you during your "time off" in Tucson and to find out more about our Goings On. Other Snowbirds and full time parish members would like to say hello, answer your questions, and welcome you back or meet you for the first time. Later that same day is the annual Snowbird Party at the home of Bill and Saucy Cutlip from 3 to 5 p.m. Please call the Cutlips at 572-6611 to RSVP and receive directions to their house. Year rounders are also welcome; just give us a call and join in. Our guests always make this such a fun time so don't miss out! "Comfy Space" ServiceOur next "Comfy Space" service (worship for those who wiggle in church and those who worship with them) will be on Sunday, January 9, at 9 a.m. in the Music Center. The theme will be "gifts," symbolizing the gifts of the kings. We'll collect the boxes that participants at the St. Nicholas service took to fill with school supplies, learn about Gifts of the Spirit given to us at Baptism, and consider how they are manifested in our lives. Ministry Development Mini-WorkshopMinistry Development Mini-Workshops will help you find a match for your interests and talents with ministries at St. Philip's. The next workshop is Sunday, January 9, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in Room 9. $10 materials fee (scholarship assistance available). Led by Linda Dewey, James Humphreys, Eric Rau, Rosalind García, and Greg Foraker. Register at the Adult Formation table on Sunday mornings or contact Rosalind or Greg.

2011 Stewardship Campaign Update We are making good progress toward our 2011 Stewardship goals. As of Monday, December 20, we have received 497 pledges (71.4% of our 696 pledge goal), totalling $962,770 (80.2% of our $1,200,000 goal). Members of the Vestry and Stewardship Committee, along with other ministry leaders, have been making phone calls to those St. Philippians who have yet to make their pledge for 2011. No pledge amount is too small. The pledge each of us makes will help our ministries continue to transform lives in Christ, and represents a key part of our individual committment to help do God's work. Our financial goal can be achieved if all 2010 pledgers were to increase their pledges by $1 per day for 2011, along with an increase of 20% in the number of pledges received for 2011, with each new pledge being at least $1 per day. $1 per day is less than a small cup of Starbuck's coffee! If you have already pledged, thank you for your support!
NOTE: If you requested pledge envelopes for 2011, they are available for pickup in the West Gallery.
Pledge materials are available on St. Philip's web site.

Win! Win! Tax Credits
Don't forget to take advantage of State income tax credits for contributions to public and private schools. These are two separate credits so you can take advantage of both of them. Complete information is provided in fliers available at the church and on the Outreach page of St. Philip's web site (scroll down to "Education Ministries." For further information call Peg Anderson at 575-8929.

THANKS FROM TIHAN! Thanks to St. Philip's, Cornerstone Fellowship, TIHAN, and SAAF volunteer teams and to all the parishioners who donated non-food items, raffle and door prizes, the December 16 Poz Cafe at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church was a resounding success! Over 200 attendees living with HIV or AIDS and their guests enjoyed the roast beef dinner and fellowship. There were enough prizes for everyone to receive one. Over one hundred guests picked up their Care Packages as they left. Thank you all for your generosity!
