Greetings!
|
This fall at St. Philip's we are exploring how we can cross over from hearing to doing God's word. We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe. We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community! |
What's Going On |
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7
First Sunday Music
As is our custom on the first Sunday of the month, the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will feature special music. Gabriel Fauré's Requiem will be presented as part of the services in observance of All Saints' Day. One of the most popular works in the choral/orchestral repertoire, the Requiem will be augmented by Faure's anthem Cantique de Jean Racine. The music will be led by the St. Philip's adult choirs, with soloists Larry Alexander, baritone, and Lisa Spurlin, soprano, and chamber orchestra, directed by Garmon Ashby. Fauré's Requiem concentrates on the idea of eternal rest, unlike other Requiem settings that emphasize the terrors of judgment. It is throughout, a work of "profound meditation ... unassailable faith, quiet confidence ... tender and peaceful expectation" (Nadia Boulanger).
Food Drive
Our "Food for Hunger" food drive happens the first Sunday of each month. Please bring your nonperishable, unbreakable food items to the Fishpond Garden on Sunday morning. Due to limited storage and the size of the bags we hand out, we have difficulty handling extra-large single containers. We do offer "ready-to-eat" bags for those who don't have cooking facilities, so donations of single-serving easy-open items are also appreciated. Thank you for your generosity to our neighbors in need.
Lay Witnesses
In a departure from custom, a different lay person will speak in place of a clergy sermon at each of the services on Sunday, November 7. Each has a story to tell. It is exciting that ten parishioners readily accepted the invitation to share their stories about the ways lives have been touched, changed, and transformed in Christ at St. Philip's. The downside is that unless you come to all ten services over the two Sundays, you will not get to hear each of their witnesses. The slate of preachers includes Raymond Dewey at 7:45 a.m.; Tom Cockrell at 9 a.m.; Alex Sugiyama at 11:15 a.m.; Marilyn Lindell at 4 p.m.; and Richard Kuns at 5:30 p.m. Texts from the lay witnesses on October 24 (shown below is Linda Dewey speaking at 11:15 a.m.) are posted on St. Philip's web site.

Newcomer Luncheon
At 12:30 p.m. on November 7, newcomers to St. Philip's are invited to a luncheon in the East Gallery. This is an opportunity to join other newcomers, clergy, staff, and Newcomer Hosts to make new friends and learn about opportunities for involvement at St. Philip's.
Three Important Forums

Mini-Workshop: How Are You a Minister?
Discover the next steps in your journey with God at these Ministry Development Mini-Workshops, designed to help you reflect on your gifts and talents and find where you engage actively in your life. This experience will help you find a match for your interests and talents with ministries at St. Philip's and may provide direction for other areas of your life or career. Attendance at previous Ministry Development Workshops is not necessary. The workshop is on November 7, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in Room 9. $10.00 mini-workshop fee includes course materials. Scholarship assistance is available. Led by Linda Dewey, James Humphreys, Eric Rau, Rosalind García, and Greg Foraker. Sign up at the Adult Formation table during Coffee Hour or contact Greg or Rosalind in the church office (299-6421).

Caring for Persons with Dementia
St. Philip's Eldercare Ministry continues its fall forum series on November 7, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz. Mara Levin, MSW, of Pima Health System's Caregiver Education and Support Program, teaches us how to communicate, guard safety, and deal with legal and money matters for elders with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. During our Mission Discernment process, ministry to elders emerged as a frequent "dream" of St. Philippians, to support parishioners who are elderly or may become so someday, or who are caring for aging family, and to reach out by offering that support to the wider community.
Reflections on an Interfaith Journey to Israel
Eighteen travelers from St. Philip's and Temple Emanu-El embarked on an extraordinary interfaith journey to Israel, June 2-14. Their journey featured memorable visits to Christian and Jewish sites throughout Israel and teachings by the Rev. John Kitagawa along the way. One participant commented, "this trip has changed us all in some way." On November 7 at 10:15 a.m. in the East Gallery, the sojourners will share memories, reflections, and a select few of several thousand photos from this remarkable experience. The September 2010 "summer wrap-up" issue of Loaves & Fishes contains the impressions of two of the sojourners.
Renouf/Nelson Library Book Sale
The used book sale sponsored each year by the Renouf/Nelson Library at St. Philip's is Sunday, November 7, and also the previous day, Saturday, November 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The book sale encourages readers of all ages and lends itself to making St. Philip's a reading church. Proceeds from the sale enable the library to keep current on new acquisitions for the collection.

On the Horizon |

Covenant Sunday November 14
We will lift up our 2011 Stewardship Campaign on Covenant Sunday, November 14, during all the services. There will also be a celebration in the Galleries, starting after the 9 a.m. service. This year, we invite you to bring a celebratory food or non-alcoholic beverage for six to eight people to share in the Galleries. You may bring these gifts to the Galleries at any time starting before the 9 a.m. service. The Stewardship Committee intends this to be a time to celebrate our mutual support and nurture of one another.
Gifted by Otherness
A repeat of last spring's forum series, "Gifted by Otherness: A Course in Gay and Lesbian Spirituality," begins on Tuesday, November 9 (through December 14), at 7 p.m. in the Renouf/Nelson Library. This course draws from the book, "Gifted by Otherness: Gay and Lesbian Christians in the Church" by L.W. Countryman and M.R. Ritley. Gay and lesbian people are encouraged by Countryman and Ritley to adopt a positive attitude to spirituality and to take a pro-active role in the Church through telling their own stories, recognizing their spiritual gifts, interpreting spiritual writings in their own context, and refusing to apologize for who they are. Along the way, the course will review aspects of progressive theology, and take plenty of time to share stories among participants. Intended for gay and lesbian people, but non-gay and non-lesbian participants who are contending with spiritual issues relating to sexuality and who are willing to maintain safe space for other participants are most welcome. Led by Chris Eastoe, Ph.D., former Senior Warden at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Trunk Sale November 13
Do you have extra items around your house but don't want to bother with having a garage sale? St. Philip's Episcopal Church is having a trunk sale on Saturday, November 13. A trunk sale is a one-day sale event that you handle yourself. Fill up your car trunk with your items and come to St. Philip's north parking lot at 7:30 a.m. You will be in charge of sales out of your own vehicle. You take in the profits of your sales and when you are done, you pack up or donate your stuff (there will be donation boxes available). The fee is $25 per car for your space ($30 for regular size vans and trucks) and will be paid to the committee on the day of the sale. That is the only cost to you. St. Philip's is located on the northeast corner of River Road and Campbell Avenue. For more information email Sue or call 742-1398.
Build with the Rector
On Saturday, November 13, members of St. Philip's can sign up to work with our Rector at the current Habitat for Humanity homes started at Building Freedom Day on 9-11-10. Please contact Dani Hitchcock, 573-7740, to sign up for one of the slots. Go to the Habitat for Humanity Tucson web site (scroll down) for a peek at Building Freedom Day 2010.

Food for Thought

Meet Katie McCallister Katie McCallister is St. Philip's new intern! She is an aspirant in the process to the priesthood through the Diocese of New Jersey. Katie is a senior in the Family Studies and Human Development program at the UofA and has a minor in the Religious Studies department. Throughout this academic year, she'll be exploring various ministries and responsibilities at St. Philip's in order to experience parish life in a large, dynamic church and to gain a better understanding of what it may be like to be a priest. This experience is preparation in hopes of attending seminary next Fall. In her free time, Katie likes to spend time with her boyfriend, Matthew, and her sister, Lauren, by going hiking, taking exercise classes, and watching movies.

Stewardship Witnesses
Last Sunday was the Blessing of the Animals, and I am committed to do the best I can for my little Yorkie, just as I am committed to doing the best I can with the other many blessings God gives me daily. We were a young family with three teenage daughters, giving at our small parish ... but pledging? More scary, tithing? The Rev. Ben Benitez, later Bishop of Texas, visited the parish. He suggested, "Start where you are. Take small steps. With the next gift or raise or bonus, tithe from that additional amount." Soon we felt glad to put God first and confident that God would provide.
--Joyce Schumann
Community -- authentic, loving, welcoming ...
Open hearts and hands doing God's work in the world ...
Community that gathers me into their midst and
Offers me opportunities to learn and grown spiritually.
In gratitude, I support St. Philip's Stewardship
And join my pledge to your pledge
To continue the work that needs to be done. --Brigid Waszczak
("The life I touch for good ... will touch another life and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt." --Frederick Buechner)
What activities or moments at St. Philip's have transformed your life?

Stewardship Campaign Update
The fall Stewardship campaign is underway. As of October 29, we have received 87 pledges for a total of $255,006. Last year at the end of week 2 we had received 124 pledges for a total of $339,226. If you have not yet returned your pledge form, we invite you to read the information thoughtfully and reflect on and pray about your experience of, participation in, and commitment to St. Philip's. Stewardship materials are available on St. Philip's web site. We are most grateful for the tangible expression of how your life has been touched by St. Philip's. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated.

Volunteers Needed
The Just Coffee Ministry is seeking a co-chair. The needed tasks take about 1-2 hours per month, and training will be provided. E-mail Suzanne or call 325-4469. Or stop by the Just Coffee table on Sunday, November 7 and November 21. Your support for the Just Coffee ministry provides livelihood for coffee growers and their families in Mexico.
The Breakfast Club is looking for volunteers help prepare and serve the best and freshest $5.00 breakfast in town. It is served 8-9 a.m. most Sundays. "Front Folk" volunteers set up the gallery, greet our guests, and make change. Kitchen volunteers help Chef Phillip cook and clean up. Volunteers arrive at 7 a.m., and everyone is done by 9:30 a.m. We ask for a firm once-a-month commitment. We invite young people who need to do service for the church to join us too. The Breakfast Club offers some twenty different hot or cold buffet choices served according to your tastes along with all the orange juice, tea, and coffee you can drink. Chef Phillip is making a few changes -- you can now have blueberry pancakes! Please contact Carmen Christy at 299-5567 if you'd like to help.
Outreach is looking for volunteers for the "Poz Cafe and Market Place" on December 16. Every month, about 200 Tucsonans living with AIDS/HIV and their guests look forward to this event. TIHAN (Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network) and SAAF (Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation) provide an evening of fellowship, a fine dinner, raffle and Bingo, music, and the POZ Café where CarePartners pick up Care Packages filled with non-food items. Faith-based organizations pair up to provide the volunteers, food, raffle prizes, and the non-food items for the POZ Café. Every December, St. Philip's teams with Cornerstone Fellowship, a congregation of sixteen people. Cornerstone Fellowship who buys the meat for dinner, while St. Philip's parishioners donate all other items! Seven adult (18 or older) volunteers are needed on Thursday, December 16, from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. Poz Cafe will take place at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Volunteers arrive at 1:30 to deliver the food, Market Place and POZ Café items, and Raffle/ Bingo prizes. At 2, volunteers attend the required one-hour education class and sign the confidentiality statement. At 3, volunteers divide the work into kitchen duties, table set-up and decorating. Kitchen duties include preparing salad, appetizers, water pitchers, and dish washing. At 5, the doors open. Dinner is served by volunteers at 5:30. During dinner, musical entertainment, games, and raffle drawings are enjoyed. After dinner, Care Packages are distributed. At about 7, TIHAN, SAAF, and congregational volunteers clean up. The work is steady and moderately demanding physically. If this one-time volunteer opportunity during Advent catches your interest, please contact parishioner and Outreach member Pat Brown by email or call 293-6846. Stop by the TIHAN table at Coffee Hour to learn how to donate items for the Care Packages and Raffle prizes.

The Presiding Bishop Visit Committee is looking for volunteers to help spread the word to other parishes in Tucson. As you know, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori is making an historic visit to St. Philip's on Sunday, February 6, 2011. In addition to services in which she will be participating that day, we will celebrate her visit with a Gala Banquet that evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the University of Arizona Student Union Ballroom, showcasing St. Philip's Outreach ministries. If you would be willing to contact another local parish, ask for help publicizing the banquet, and if possible arrange to visit on a Sunday morning during their equivalent of Coffee Hour, please email Raymond Dewey, call 578-9066, or visit the 75th Anniversary table on Sunday mornings.
Outreach Christmas Project
The annual Christmas Project collection will start on November 7. This year we are collecting money to help the kids at 3 schools: Rio Vista, Holaway and Imago Dei. Holaway School was added this year as children from both Rio Vista and Holaway participate in our After School Music Program. 80-90% of the kids in these schools qualify for free or reduced lunch at school, so the need here is great! Imago Dei, of course, is an Episcopal school which survives on donations to continue its mission of teaching children from difficult backgrounds. This year, our goal is to raise $10,000. The money will be used in various ways to help the kids and their families: buying gift cards for food and gas, socks and underwear to augment used clothing from the clothing bank, small rewards for doing well in class, canned food to take home on the weekend, or, in Imago Dei's case, just paying the rent! Please open your hearts for these children and help us meet our goal. Any questions, please call Nancy Atherton at 299-2439 or Peg Anderson at 575-8929. THANKS!
Two Great Parish "Photo Ops"
Cabaret, a fund-raising event planned, organized, and performed by St. Philip's adult choirs, was even more amazing than usual this year. You can see photos of the event on St. Philip's web site or on Facebook. Kudos to Elena Todd and a host of hard-working volunteers for pulling off such a successful event, and thank you for your support.
The popular Blessing of the Animals service had almost as many photographers as it had dogs! You can see photos online thanks to Guy Atchley (click on "Blessing"), or on Facebook in John Kitagawa's "October Ministries" album or on the St. Philip's Group page.
