Forward to a Friend
Greetings!

This fall at St. Philip's we are exploring how we can cross over from hearing to doing God's word. We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On

Guest Preacher
We are pleased to welcome a special guest preacher at the 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, September 19: the Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry, Bishop of North Carolina. He was the first African American to be elected Diocesan Bishop in the South. He is in demand throughout the Church for his dynamic preaching of the Word of God and articulations of the movement of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Curry will also lead a forum at 10:15 a.m. He is known for his deep theological insights into topic such as justice, stewardship, and ministry. Bishop Curry and John Kitagawa have known each other since student days at Hobart College. They collaborated in ministry when Michael was Rector of St. James, Lafayette Square, Baltimore, and John was the Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Maryland. Sharon Curry and John were colleagues on the staff of the Diocese of Maryland.

Bishop Curry is in Arizona attending the House of Bishops meeting in Phoenix. A contingent of bishops took an informational trip to the border earlier in the week. You can read about it on the diocesan web site.

We pray for the House of Bishops meeting:
Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel in House of Bishops for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach them in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide them to perceive what is right, and grant them both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Book of Common Prayer, page 818

Church School teachers and youth leaders will also be blessed. Church School will begin at 10:15 a.m. with a traveling blessing of the Church School classrooms and youth spaces. At 11:30 a.m., Children, Youth, and Family Ministries will have a picnic in the Plaza. CYFM will provide hotdogs, hamburgers, and veggie burgers. Please bring the following based on last name: A-H: salads or side dishes; I-P: desserts; Q-Z: beverages, especially water, soda, tea (no alcohol please). Join us for food, fun, friends, and a jumping castle!

"9:00 Class" Resumes
Explore Questions of Value beginning Sunday, September 19, at 9 a.m. in La Paz. Each session features a video presentation by Professor Patrick Grim, followed by discussion facilitated by Brad Stroup. What is it that gives something genuine value? What things are really worth striving for? What is it that makes life worth living? Are there values that transcend cultural differences? Can we have ethical values without religion? If the universe operates in terms of deterministic laws, how can there be real choice? Is all value subjective? We can even ask if life is always worth living, or whether in some situations we would be better off dead. What values, for instance, are involved in thinking about life and death? What values are evident in a yearning for immortality? The lines of discussion raised throughout the course are regularly as provocative as these, and Professor Grim means them to be exactly that. Questions of Value is a course for anyone who has ever felt the tug of such questions or who wants to fine-tune their ability to see how deeper questions of ethics and values apply to the choices that make up their lives.

More information about fall Adult Formation offerings is posted on St. Philip's web site.

Parish Breakfast Resumes
The Breakfast Club Ministry is pleased to announce that we debut this year's breakfast service season on Sunday, September 19, featuring a new chef. Phillip Koumal will replace Juanita Oliver, who has taken a promotion with Sodexo Services. She now is managing their catering operation in Sierra Vista. Good Luck Juanita! Phillip is a Tucson native, and UA graduate. His "day jobs" are with the Kingfisher Bar & Grill, Bluefin Seafood Bistro, and Elle Wine Country Restaurant. He is American Culinary Federation certified, as well! Phillip brings a wealth of culinary expertise to our Sunday breakfast. Please join us between 8 and 9 a.m. and say hello to our new cook. Bon Appetit!

The Breakfast Club seeks volunteers to participate in this important Evangelism ministry. This would involve a few-hour commitment approximately once a month. For more information contact John Freyer at 797-9055 or Warren Edminster at 887-5997.

A Day with Josias Joesler
Experience the historic artistry of noted Tucson architect Josias Joesler on a guided tour by luxury coach of some of Joesler's legacies. The tour, part of St. Philip's 75th Anniversary celebration, will depart St. Philip's at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 30. Joesler experts will accompany the full-day tour, which includes a biographical presentation on Joesler and his works, followed by a tour of four Joesler-designed homes, a tour and lunch at Hacienda del Sol, and a tour and reception at St. Philip's. In addition, participants may spend free time at St. Philip's annual Outdoor Art Show.

Josias Joesler, born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1895, arrived in Tucson in 1927 and became Tucson's most famous and recognized architect. Together with his patron, developer John Murphey, Joesler was instrumental in the construction of 400 buildings, including homes and office buildings in Tucson and the Catalina Foothills. Perhaps his most well known inspirational works are Broadway Village Shopping Center, Catalina Foothills Estates, Grace Mansion, St. Michael and All Angels Church, Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch, and St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church.

The public is cordially invited to attend. The cost is $75 per person inclusive. The tour is limited to 40 participants. For further information contact Tom or Sue Cross at 742-1398.

International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat

St. Philip's Outreach partner Habitat for Humanity, and the National Council of Churches USA, have declared Sunday, September 19 the International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat. Through prayer, Habitat for Humanity continues to make a dramatic difference in the lives of people around the world. Many volunteers are drawn to this ministry after hearing God's call and seeking God's guidance through prayer. The hurdles of funding and building homes are overcome through the miracles of prayer.

Eternal God, we await the coming of your perfect kingdom, when all will find shelter, all will know the safety of home, and all divisions will be reconciled; until that day, grant us the faith to endure the brokenness of this world, the hope to look beyond this brokenness, and the love to work to transform this brokenness, according to your perfect will. Amen.

A Good Problem to Have: Violins Needed

St. Philip's After-School Music and Homework Program is bursting at the seams, serving students from both Rio Vista and Holaway Elementary Schools. Quite a few of our participants are interested in playing violin and we simply don't have enough instruments for them. If you have a usable violin that you can donate to the After-School Program, particularly a reduced-size violin, the students would be very appreciative. During the Mission Discernment process many of you "dreamed" of more outreach programs at St. Philip's. The After-School Program is an example of your dreams that have become an ongoing reality.
