Greetings!
|
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On |
Murphey Gallery Rededication On Sunday, September 5, at 10:15 a.m., the Murphey Gallery will be rededicated. Over the summer, some structural cracks in the foundation were repaired and the tile was replaced. Thank you to St. Philip's Preservation & Endowment Foundation for funding these repairs and renovations.
Border & Immigration Ministry St. Philip's Border and Immigration Ministry will meet on Thursday, September 2, at 7 p.m. in La Paz. Join us as we grow in the Gospel call to welcome, honor, respect, and care for the stranger among us. For more information and to sign up for the weekly e-letter, contact Suzanne Hesh at BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org
Welcome Sunday September 12
"Welcome Sunday," St. Philip's celebration of the beginning of the program year, will be Sunday, September 12. The day features special liturgical elements, including the return of the adult choirs at 9 and 11:15 a.m., as well as a ministry fair all morning in the Murphey Gallery. This year's theme is "Crossing Over: Moving from Hearing to Doing God's Word" as we explore opportunities to move forward in ministry.

Community Twelve-Step Eucharist
In observance of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, St. Philip's invites the Tucson community to a 12-Step Eucharist on Sunday, September 12, at 3 p.m. in the Church. A 12-Step Eucharist is both a celebration and a prayer for recovery. It is a prayer of gratitude from those who are working through the 12-Step program who are already on the path to recovery and a prayer for those still suffering from addictions. The service follows the form of a traditional Eucharist, or communion service, with each of the twelve steps incorporated throughout the service. The well-known serenity prayer is also included. The Rev. Dr. Dan B. will preach. Everyone is cordially invited to attend--those who are involved in any 12-Step program, those who support loved ones engaged in such programs, those whose lives have been affected by addiction, and those who are interested in learning more. Please extend the invitation to your friends outside the St. Philip's community.

We are pleased to welcome a special guest preacher at the 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, September 19: the Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry, Bishop of North Carolina. He was the first African American to be elected Diocesan Bishop in the South. He is in demand throughout the Church for his dynamic preaching of the Word of God and articulations of the movement of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Curry will also lead a forum at 10:15 a.m. He is known for his deep theological insights into topic such as justice, stewardship, and ministry. Bishop Curry and John Kitagawa have known each other since student days at Hobart College. They collaborated in ministry when Michael was Rector of St. James, Lafayette Square, Baltimore, and John was the Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Maryland. Sharon Curry and John were colleagues on the staff of the Diocese of Maryland.
The Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire, will be holding an "Open Forum for all interested parties" at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 545 South 5th Avenue. Members of St. Philip's are invited.
Your Voice Can Be Heard! Pima County Interfaith Council is sponsoring an Accountability Session: A Dialog with Candidates for State and National Office on Sunday, September 26, at 2:30 p.m., Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church St. PCIC leaders will converse with candidates about issues that you have said are important: Jobs, education, immigration, health care, etc. Become involved in meaningful community change! Be sure to attend this meeting -- on behalf of our communities and our churches. This is a time when the size and volume of our presence and witness are essential.
Renouf/Nelson Library Book Sale
Fall is around the corner and so is the used book sale sponsored each year by the Renouf/Nelson Library at St. Philip's. This year's sale is Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. The book sale encourages readers of all ages and lends itself to making St. Philip's a reading church. Proceeds from the sale enable the library to keep current on new acquisitions for the collection. The library committee seeks volunteers to help work in the sale. Duties will include set up on November 5, working with customers during the sale, and dismantling on Sunday, November 7. If you would like to participate in this event, please contact Gail Freyer at 797-9055 or Helene Woodhams at 529-0765. Book donations for the sale are always welcome. Drop them off in the library.

OUR OUTREACH PARTNERS Episcopal Relief and Development
St. Philip's recently received a letter of thanks from Episcopal Relief and Development for a donation made by the Outreach Commission. ERD works to eliminate poverty so that all people can live lives of dignity through programs that alleviate hunger, promote health, create economic opportunities, and respond to disasters. This letter (along with several other letters of thanks) is posted on St. Philip's Web site on the Outreach page. There is also a link from "Latest News."
Habitat For Humanity-Tucson
Habitat for Humanity-Tucson announces its 5th annual golf fundraiser on Friday, October 22, at Arizona National Golf Club. This tournament supports Habitat's vital homeownership mission, to eliminate poverty housing in Southern Arizona by making affordable housing a matter of community conscience and action. Festivities begin with registration at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. If you don't want to golf you may also attend the post-play banquet, take advantage of a sponsorship opportunity, or volunteer to help. More information is available on Habitat's web site.
St. Philippians Feed the Hungry @ Episcopal Campus Ministry For the first month of the new school year, parishioners from St. Philip's are breaking bread with UA college students Sunday nights at the Campus Christian Ministry. The program is designed to strengthen ties between local Episcopal Churches and the Episcopal Chaplaincy at the University of Arizona. Teams from surrounding parishes worship alongside the students and later serve dinner and share table talk. This is a time of building relationships between young people beginning to make decisions about their adult life with those who have lived the questions over a number of years. "Attending university can be a time of exploration and questioning," said Clare Yarborough, Coordinator of this year's dinner events. "This provides an opportunity for us to share our stories with the upcoming generation, about the times our faith has led us to 'take the path less trodden' in career or life decisions. It can be very reassuring to a young person struggling to find his/her way in life to know that others have also wrestled with these challenges and gone on to lead successful and faithful lives." Although all the dinner teams are filled for this fall semester, there are still opportunities to host dinners in the winter and spring. Talk to Clare if you are interested.

CELEBRATING DREAMS BECOMING REALITY Fall Elder Care Forums
Watch for news of upcoming forums on Elder Care this fall. Pick up an Adult Formation booklet at the Welcome Sunday ministry fair, and/or subscribe to the Adult Formation e-letter by sending an e-mail to adultformation@stphilipstucson.org. During our Mission Discernment process, Elder Care emerged as a frequent dream of St. Philippians, to support parishioners who are caring for aging family and to reach out by offering that support to the wider community. In fact, last spring's Elder Care Fair was so popular that our next one will spill out into the gardens.
UA Research Study Participants Sought Participants are needed for research study about how people understand language. To be eligible, you must be 60-85 years old and a native English speaker with no history of learning disabilities or neurological disease. The study consists of 4 to 6 sessions, each of which lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Parking is provided, and you will be compensated for your time. For more information, contact Dr. Gayle DeDe: 626-0831 or gdede@arizona.edu. Dr. DeDe is part of the partnership between St. Philip's Elder Care Ministry and UA. St. Philip's Elder Care Ministry is one of the "realities" that originated in your dreams during the Mission Discernment process. |
