Greetings!
|
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On |
Friends of Music Summer Series: Paloma Winds The popular Friends of Music Summer Concert Series continues on Sunday, August 22, at 2 p.m. in the Church. Paloma Winds, composed of Deena Reedy, flute; Sara Fraker, oboe; Andrew Braden, clarinet; Rebecca Cain, bassoon; and Victor Valenzuela, horn, will present "Sounds of Summer." The varied and entertaining program features "Roaring Fork" by Eric Ewazen, warm and majestic sounds portraying scenes from the Colorado wilderness. Another treat is Giulio Briccialdi's "Potpourri Fantastico," based on themes from Rossini's "Barber of Seville." Also on the program are Samuel Barber's "Summer Music" and a suite by Gunther Schuller. Admission by donation.
Phixers "Phocus" on Painting St. Philip's Sunday home maintenance workshop series continues on Sunday, August 22. The St. Philip's "Phixers," a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church, sponsor this series of classes on general home maintenance topics. Professionals from the community teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so participants should dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. Participants may also want to bring a bag lunch. August 22, at 12:30 p.m. in the West Gallery: Perfect Painting. Jim Valentine and Randy Wilsterman of Frazee Paint will talk about proper techniques for painting walls and trim. There will be opportunity for hands-on practice, so wear your painting clothes!

On the Horizon |
Welcome Sunday September 12 "Welcome Sunday," St. Philip's celebration of the beginning of the program year, will be Sunday, September 12. The day features special liturgical elements, including the return of the adult choirs at 9 and 11:15 a.m., as well as a ministry fair all morning in the Murphey Gallery. This year's theme is "Crossing Over: Moving from Hearing to Doing" as we explore opportunities to move forward in ministry.
Call For Entries Over the years, St. Philip's has inspired artists in all media to create their own vision of the Church and grounds. In celebration of our 75th anniversary, the Murphey Gallery is sponsoring a special exhibit of images of St. Philip's, entitled "Visions of St. Philip's." Forty to fifty works will be selected for exhibit in the Gallery in December 2010. Twenty-five works will be chosen as a traveling exhibit to several venues in Tucson, beginning in January 2011 and returning to St. Philip's in May for a final showing. For the first time, the Gallery will award prizes totaling $1000. Work will be judged by an outside expert, and prizes will be awarded at a reception on December 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. The deadline for submission is September 15. Works will be accepted in all media but must be able to be wall mounted, no smaller than 16" in either direction and no larger than 42" in either direction. An electronic image must be submitted in jpg form on CD along with the entry form. More information and entry forms are available on the 75th anniversary page of St. Philip's web site. Information may also be picked up in the church office.
Your Voice Can Be Heard! On August 29, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz, come to a second vital issues meeting, convened by Beth Brouillette, Brad Stroup, and the Pima County Interfaith Council. This is your opportunity to join with PCIC in working to fix Arizona at this November's elections. Concerns will be formulated at this meeting, to be presented at an interfaith Accountability Conference at the Tucson Convention Center on September 26. All major candidates for public office in Arizona will be at the September 26 conference. Be sure to attend both meetings -- on behalf of our communities and our churches. This is a time when the size and volume of our presence and witness are essential.

Food for Thought
|

Positive Change Is Working! In May and June, our combined coins and dollars totaled $500 to provide scholarships for St. Philip's summer arts programs. July and August donations will go to the After-School Music and Homework Program, so please give generously! Donation jars for your spare change are available in the Church and at coffee hour each Sunday. Thanks to all who have donated to the Positive Change program!

Outreach Thanks You! Once again facing the awful prospect of migrants dying in the desert from the heat and lack of food and water, the Outreach Commission sponsored an effort to provide humanitarian aid in the form of survival packets. Last Sunday, August 15, 175 packets of food were put together, which will be distributed by volunteers working with the Center for Migrant Resources in Naco, Sonora, and Humanitarian Border Solutions, Bisbee. Without your support, by donating the various specific kinds of food we needed and by helping assemble the packets, this would not have been possible. Bless you all!

Transforming Lives The ten St. Philippians who attended Stewardship University in July and three more who attended last weekend were transformed with an invigorated appreciation of stewardship, not only in relation to St. Philip's but also to the greater community of God and themselves. Thought for the day: If you believe that everything we have comes from God and belongs to God, then transform your lives by being good stewards of these things and "pay the interest" by generously and cheerfully devoting a portion of your time, talent and money to doing God's work. |
