Forward to a Friend
Greetings!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Message from the Senior Warden

As you read this e-newsletter, the parish office and campus are closed. Our staff is directly impacted by this action and are on unpaid leave for the week. Please hold them in your prayers each day of this week.

I ask you to reflect on the closing words of our Rector's homily July 25th and found on St. Philip's Web site.

"... I have a serious request of each and every one of you. In addition to your usual prayers, please pray unceasingly for St. Philip's  Parish -- for our diverse ministries that change and transform the lives of parishioners and neighbors. This is an activity in which everyone can participate ... you could start by reflecting on the programs and ministries that tuch you life in meaningful and transforming ways. Give thanks for the ways God has blessed you. Then, please pray God to guide, strengthen and bless these programs and ministries so they may continue to touch your life and those of others."

(from Persistent Prayer, Sermon for Pentecost IX, July 25, 2010 )

--Richard R. Kuns, Sr. Warden

On the Horizon

NOTE: This edition of the Parish E-Newsletter is abbreviated because the staff are on mandatory unpaid leave. The next issue will be published in mid-August.

Donations Sought for Migrant Packs
This summer we are once again facing the awful prospect of migrants dying in the desert from the heat and lack of food and water. The Outreach Commission is providing humanitarian aid in the form of food packets, which will be distributed by volunteers working with the Center for Migrant Resources in Naco, Sonora, and Humanitarian Border Solutions, Bisbee. We will be collecting food during Coffee Hour on August 8 and August 15. Assembly of the food packets is scheduled for Sunday, August 15, in the Children's Chapel starting at 10:15 a.m. We need: Sports drink; pop top lid meat or tuna, protein bars, beef jerky; nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, chips, fig bars, or cookies in small packets; granola, power, or snack bars; applesauce, pudding, or fruit cup (with spoon); peanut butter or cheese filled crackers (small packets); bottled water. Your support is needed and very much appreciated. Thank you!

Summer Lecture Series Continues: The West Is Not Immune: Religion and Violence in Early Modern Europe
The University of Arizona Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies, with St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church, presents a summer lecture series focusing on violence in the name of religion. At various times and places, Western Christians have engaged in acts of violence that they insisted God demanded of them. In today's complex world, it is important to realize that some of these times are not in a far distant past. The Summer Lecture Series this year takes up four of those contexts, drawn from the Reformation and post-Reformation era. Lectures are at 10:15 a.m. in the Music Center.

Sunday, August 8: "Mayhem in the Name of God: The Thirty Years' War 1618-1648"
Susan Karant-Nunn, Regents' Professor of History, Director of the Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies

Sunday, August 15: "'Ready to Die in God': The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre"
Rebecca Mueller, Ph.D. student

Sunday, August 22: "Prisoner and Commander: The Sack of Rome Becomes a Massacre"
Daniel Jones, M.A. student

Fine Art Tours Resume
The second-Sunday-of-the-month Fine Art Tours will resume on Sunday, August 8. Tour seven centuries of St. Philip's art pieces from the fourteenth century to the near present. The tour will include detailed comments on the paintings, sculpture, and artifacts from the Samuel Kress and the Helen and John Murphey collections, located in the nave, chapel, baptistry, and transepts. Starting at 12:30 p.m. in the altar area in front of the portrait of St. Philip, the guided tour will last approximately an hour. Led by St. Philippian Mary Lou Foote.

Food for Thought

A Message from the Rector
Giving via offering baskets traditionally slows down in the summer with reduced attendance, yet expenses continue. Utility bills are up with the hot summer weather. Our Finance Officer and Parish Administrator work each week juggling cash flow in order to pay bills. We are currently a couple of months behind in monthly assessment payments to the Diocese and pay the most urgent bills first. For these reason, it is important to keep pledges current during the summer months and put a little extra into the offertory plate if you are able to do so! Thank you for your support of St. Philip's mission and ministries.
--The Rev. John E. Kitagawa, Rector

"STEW U"
Did you know that the Diocese hosts regular workshops to help congregations with stewardship? On July 28, 10 St. Philippians attended what proved to be a surprising and inspiring day, facilitated by the Rev. Canon Tomothy Dombek. Lesson #1: Tell your story! Interested in learning more?
